Game Recaps 4/13: Pomeranz dominates, Kinston loses

Kinston's Drew Pomeranz had another fantastic start, but it wasn't enough as Wilmington beat Kinston 2-1 Wednesday afternoon at Historic Grainger Stadium. With the win Wilmington swept Kinston in the three game series.

Pomeranz got a big bop from his offense early. Adam Abraham blasted the first pitch he saw over the left field wall in the bottom of the second inning for Kinston. Abraham now has a home run in each of his last three games. Abraham leads the Carolina League in both home runs (3) and RBI (6).

Pomeranz took a perfect game into the fourth inning for his second straight start, walking Whit Merrifield to lead off the fourth. Pomeranz struck out five through his first three innings of work. Pomeranz had not given up a hit in his first 5 2/3 innings of work. With Adam Frost on first and two-outs in the sixth, things fell apart. Kinston catcher Roberto Perez overthrew second base on Frost's steal attempt, allowing Frost to take third base. Pomeranz then gave up his first hit of the game, as Whit Merrifield drove Frost home with a single to center, tying the game at one. Pomeranz got the no decision, giving up one hit and an unearned run in 5 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out eight.

Wilmington would take the lead for good in the top of the seventh inning. With Kinston reliever Bret Brach on the mound, Rey Navarro led off with a triple. Navarro scored later in the inning on an RBI ground-out from John Whittleman. The Blue Rocks managed just three hits on the day. Brach (0-1) took the loss, giving up two hits and one run in 3 1/3 innings. He struck out one and did not allow a walk. Tim Melville (1-1) got the win for Wilmington, giving up five hits and one run in six innings. Kelvin Herrera and Kevin Chapman combined for three innings of one hit ball from the pen. Kinston had six hits on the afternoon, Justin Toole went 2-for-3.

With the first homestand of the season in the books, the K-Tribe (1-5) hits the road for the first time this season on Friday. After a scheduled off day on Thursday, the K-Tribe takes on Winston-Salem in the Triad on Friday night at 7pm. T.J. McFarland will take the hill for Kinston. The Indians return home for an eight game homestand April 21st through the 28th.

AEROS HANG ON, WIN RUBBER MATCH WITH CURVE 3-2

The Akron Aeros got a quality start from right-handed pitcher Joe Gardner and took the rubber match of a three-game series against the Altoona Curve 3-2 Wednesday at Canal Park.

Cory Burns gave up an unearned run in the top of the ninth inning to make it a one-run game, but struck out the side for the third time this season with runners on first and second to record his Eastern League best fourth save of 2011.

Gardner pitched five three-hit innings giving up one earned run, working around four walks and striking out two to earn his second win of the season.

Jeff Locke got the loss for Altoona lasting 4.2 innings giving up two earned runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out six.

Jason Donald continued his rehab assignment with Akron going 2-4 with two infield singles.

The Aeros (4-3) got on the board in the bottom of the third inning on back-to-back RBI doubles from Matt McBride and Kyle Bellows that made it 2-0.

The Curve (3-4) got a run back in the top of the fourth inning off Gardner on a Jeremy Farrell RBI single that made it 2-1.

That’s the way it stood until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Aeros added an insurance run on a John Drennen solo home run to the Canal Park right field bleachers.

Nick Hagadone, Matt Langwell and Cory Burns made the lead stand up and the Aeros won their first series of the season.

Akron will begin a seven-game road trip at Reading on Thursday. The Aeros will send lefty Scott Barnes to the hill coming off a no decision in his first outing against Binghamton. He will face left-handed pitcher and former Aero Ryan Edell. Edell pitched for the Aeros in parts of 2008, 2009 and 2010. Thursday’s first pitch is at 7:05 p.m. Coverage begins on Fox Sports 1350 AM at 6:50 p.m.

Rayl and Captains Defeat Dragons 13-1

The Captains bounced back on Wednesday night at Classic Park with an impressive 13-1 win over the Dragons. Mike Rayl was brilliant in his second start of the season, tossing six scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, walking two and striking out six for his second win of the year.

Lake County exploded for six runs in the third inning using six hits and two Dayton errors. Anthony Gallas doubled to start it off. Argenis Martinez drew a walk after fouling off five pay off pitches from starter Daniel Corcino. Carlos Moncrief reached on an error and on the play Yorman Rodriguez commited a second error resulting in the game's first run. Tyler Cannon singled center to drive in Martinez. Giovanny Urshela collected his second hit a double down the leftfield line to score Moncrief. Alex Monsalve provided the games biggest blow a three run bomb to left center to cap off the inning.

Jesus Aguilar added with his team high fifth RBI in the fourth innings, with a double to center scoring Moncrief to make it 7-0.

Gallas kicked off the fifth inning with his second double of the night and came into score on a Moncrief RBI single to leftfield pushing lead out to 8-0.

The Captains batted around for a second time in the eighth inning scoring five runs, five hits. Aguilar drove in RBI number six on the year with a single to left. Cannon scored on Porfirio Martinez wild pitch. Alex Lavisky collected his second hit of the game an RBI single with the bases loaded scoring Aguilar. Argenis Martinez drove in a pair with a two run single up the middle to put Lake County on top 13-0.

Dayton starter Corcino (0-2) took the loss working 4.2 innings allowing seven runs, five earned on eight hits, walking one and striking out three.

The Captains and Dragons will finish up their four game series in Classic Park on Thursday night at 7:00PM. RHP Kyle Blair (0-0) will make his second professional start for Lake County against LHP Tanner Robles (0-0) for Dayton.

Am I seeing this right Pomz has a 17:2 k:bb god that is awesome. So through two games he has a 0.00 ERA, 2 walks and 3 hits for a whip of .45, to go along with those 17 strikeouts.

Could you have asked for a better professional start?

Understand the cold weather factor. Pomerantz needs to be challenged at Double A ... asap.

Why bring up Pom to AA? He should get a few more starts to build his confidence and work more on his secondary pitching. If he was going to the bullpen, then yes move him quickly. Yet, he needs time to work on change-up and possibly a 4th secondary offering. So he isn't going to the bigs this year. If he does, he would just be wasting service time to FA unless he has that 3rd and 4th pitch ready. Kind of like Masterson ... now that he is coming into his own, he is already arbitration eligible and closer to FA due to being in ML while working on that secondary offering to lefties that he needed to be an effective starter.

Plus, who will be sent down. Wait for an injury or a few more starts from others because at this point, only Packer has had a so-so start at AA.

Hearing a lot of "promote him now" stuff with Pomeranz. First off, you can't promote a guy when there is no spot available. Who you gonna bump from a crowded/loaded rotation in Akron with Packer, Adams, Gardner, Barnes and De La Cruz? All five of those guys are legit starting pitching prospects and important to the organization. Then in Columbus they have 5-6 arms there. So the crowd at the top I think will keep Pomeranz in Kinston for awhile, at lease until injuries/callups/performance start to affect things in the upper levels. I also don't think it would harm anything to keep Pomeranz in Kinston for 2-3 months and get 10-12 starts there. He's still likely to pitch in Akron for a majority of the season, just may not get there until late May or mid-June.

I am completely fine with keeping him Kinston for a while. I am pretty sure he is relying heavily on his fastball right now, we do want his other stuff to develop.
