De La Cruz pitched five innings, gave up two earned runs on six hits and walked one to go along with his nine strikeouts as he picked up his first win of 2011.
Cory Burns recorded his fifth save of the season for the Aeros pitching 1.1 innings of relief, giving up one earned run on one hit, striking out two and walking none. Burns only blemish came on a solo home run by Caleb Joseph. Burns’ five saves are the most by any pitcher in the Eastern League in 2011.
Eddie Gamboa suffered the loss for the Baysox lasting five innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits, striking out six and walking none.
The Aeros (6-6) got things started in the top of the first inning off Gamboa. Juan Diaz singled with one out and Chun Chen doubled him home to make it 1-0. Matt McBride followed with a two-run home run to left field to give the Aeros a 3-0 lead.
The Baysox (5-6) scored a run in both the first and second innings, but De La Cruz settled in and allowed just two hits and three total base runners over the next three innings of work.
The Aeros added a run in the top of the sixth inning on a John Drennen RBI single. That run proved to be difference as Nick Hagadone and Burns combined to hold the Baysox to just one run over the final four innings as the Aeros won game one of this three-game series.
Akron will look to make it two straight against Bowie on Tuesday night. Aeros manager Chris Tremie has yet to announce his starter for Tuesday’s contest. The Baysox will turn to right-handed pitcher Zach Clark. Clark is 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA in 2011. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard on Fox Sports 1350 AM or online at sportsradio1350.com. Coverage begins at 6:50 p.m.
Toledo routs Columbus is series finale
The Toledo Mud Hens finished their stay in Columbus with a 13-5 victory Monday afternoon.
Clete Thomas drove in six runs and Andy Dirks homered twice for the Mud Hens. Toledo finished with 16 hits and seven players produced a multi-hit game.
Clippers right-hander Corey Kluber allowed six earned runs over 4.2 innings and suffered the loss. Joe Martinez (four runs in 2.1 innings and Jess Todd (three runs in one inning) both struggled in relief.
The Clippers managed five runs and six hits from six different players. Chad Huffman and Wes Hodges each drove in two.
The Clippers begin a series with Louisville at 6:35pm Tuesday from Huntington Park.
Blue Rocks Beat Kinston 5-3
The Blue Rocks took an early lead and held on, beating Kinston 5-3 Monday night in Wilmington, Delaware. It was the Blue Rocks seventh straight win.
Kinston starter T.J. House had his hands full in the first inning. After a couple of singles and a walk loaded the bases with two-outs in the bottom of the first frame, Tim Ferguson walked to drive in Whit Merrifield. Jose Bonilla then stepped to the dish and delivered a first pitch single, driving home Rey Navarro and John Whittleman. The RBI base knock gave Wilmington a 3-0 first inning advantage. The Blue Rocks (8-2) added to the lead in the second inning thanks to an RBI double from Navarro, driving in Merrifield. House (0-1) took the loss for Kinston (2-7), giving up six hits and four earned runs in four innings. House walked two and struck out two batters.
Wilmington starter Elisaul Pimental had a shutout going until the top of the fourth inning. Adam Abraham started the frame with a single for Kinston. With one out in the inning, Chase Burnette bounced a double off the wall in right-center field to drive in Abraham. Roberto Perez followed with an RBI double of his own to make the score 4-2 in favor of Wilmington. Kinston cut the Blue Rocks lead to one in the top of the sixth inning, when Chase Burnette blasted another RBI double, his third hit of the night. The knock drove in Abner Abreu and the Wilmington lead shrank to 4-3.
Kinston reliever Chris Jones threw two scoreless innings from the pen, before Wilmington got to him in the bottom of the seventh. The inning started with an error and a walk. The Blue Rocks would then take a 5-3 lead on an RBI double from Nick Francis. Jones went 2 2/3 inings, giving up one run on two hits. Jose Flores finished the game for Kinston, giving up one hit while striking out three in 1 1/3 innings of work. Brendan Lafferty and Kevin Chapman combined to allow just one K-Tribe hit from the Wilmington bullpen. Chapman picked up the save for the Blue Rocks.
The two teams continue the three game series Tuesday night at 6:30 pm. Carolina League Pitcher of the Week Drew Pomeranz will get the start for Kinston.
Ah Nuts, Captains Lose 7-5
The Lansing Lugnuts rallied from two runs down to defeat Lake County 7-5. With the game tied at five, Oliver Dominguez delivered a game winning pinch hit RBI single in the eighth with two out to put the Lugnuts in front 6-5.
Lansing jumped on the board in the first inning, Carlos Pena doubled to leftfield to leadoff. Pena advanced to third base on a fly out. Jake Marisnick hit a weak ground ball to third that was enough to score Pena to make it 1-0.
Marisnick singled to start the fourth inning and stole second and third. Marcus Knecht singled to left scoring Marisnick putting Lansing up 2-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, Anthony Gallas singled with two outs, extending his hit streak to seven straight. Alex Lavisky singled putting runners on first and second. Brian Heere drove in his first run of the season with an RBI single scoring Gallas. Argenis Martinez reached on an error loading up the bases. Nick Bartolone hit a groundball to short, but the first baseman KC Hobson could not hang on to the throw and Lavisky came into score to make it 2-2.
In the fifth, back to back singles by Perez and Gustavo Pierre put runners on first and third. Marisnick drove in his second RBI with another ground out to second making 3-2.
In the Captains half of the fifth, Jesus Aguilar and Alex Monsalve singled to right field to start and Gallas walked and loaded the bases. Lavisky singled in two runs to give the Captains a 4-3 lead. Martinez added an RBI ground out to third scoring Gallas pushing lead to 5-3.
The Lugnuts scored a run in the sixth to make it 5-4, an RBI single by Balbino Fuenmayor scoring Knecht who doubled.
JD Reichenbach (1-1) suffered the loss working three innings, allowing three runs on five hits. Sam Strickland (3-0) picked up the win working two perfect innings. Steve Turnbull picked up his fifth save of the year pitching the ninth.
Lake County continues the home stand on Tuesday night at Classic Park at 7:00PM against Lansing. The Captains start RHP Kyle Blair (0-0) against RHP Casey Lawrence (1-0) for the Lugnuts. Catch all the action 1330 AM WELW or online at captainsbaseball.com.

Good to see Lavisky hitting. How good will the Aeros staff be when Pomeranz gets there?
