Notes on Offense:
On Tuesday, outfielder Jason Smit was named the Indians Minor League Player of the Week for the first week of the minor league season. Over the first week of the season, Smit hit .464 with two homeruns and drove in seven runs. He is currently hitting .434 with five doubles and 11 RBI. If he continues on this torrid pace, he could be promoted to Kinston soon.
Alex Lavisky busted out of his nine game slump over the weekend versus Bowling Green. Over his first nine games, Lavisky batted .152; in two games on the road versus Bowling Green, he went 4 for 9 at the plate with two homeruns and six RBI (four of which came in one game). Lavisky is currently batting .220 with two homeruns on the young season. He leads the team in RBI with 12. Lavisky is starting to show why the Tribe drafted him in the 8th round of the draft last season, but he is going to have to continue to improve.
Anthony Gallas continues to surprise. The Strongsville native is batting .333 with eight doubles, three stolen bases, and a .386 OBP. He currently has a six game hitting streak. Gallas was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2010 out of Kent State University.
Alex Monsalve has gotten off to a great start. He is hitting .339 with one homerun and nine RBI in 14 games. The 19-year old is playing in his first full professional season. Keep an eye on him.
Hitter of the Week:
Tyler Cannon is this weeks Hitter of the Week. Cannon currently has an 11 game hitting streak. Over the span of the streak, Tyler is hitting .375 with 15 hits, eight RBI, and a 1.038 OPS. Tyler has played in 12 games this season. He was drafted in 2010 in the 12th round out of the University of Virginia.
Notes on Pitching:
Owen Dew has had a tumultuous two weeks. It’s early in the season, but the right-handed reliever is 0-2 and sporting a 7.27 ERA over 8.2 innings pitched. Dew has given up a run in all of his three outings (7 R/7ER).
Kyle Blair picked up his first professional win in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday night. Blair went six innings, allowing one run on five hits. He did not walk a batter and also had four strikeouts.
Steven Wright is back with the Captains. Wright, a 2006 2nd round draft pick out of the University of Hawaii, made his professional debut with the Captains back in 2007. He is currently trying to refine his fastball command as well as work on a new pitch (knuckleball). He pitched on Thursday night versus the Bowling Green Hot Rods. Wright worked four innings, giving up one hit and two runs. He also walked three and struck out one.
Francisco Jimenez is quietly having a good start to the 2011 season. Jimenez got the win in the Opening Night no-hitter by throwing four innings in relief. He is currently 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA in 14 innings pitched (10 strikeouts). Francisco is in his third go-round with Lake County. I thought he had pitched well enough last season to earn the promotion to Kinston.
Mike Rayl gave up a run. Actually, he gave up two. Rayl allowed his first earned runs of the season versus Lansing. Rayl’s ERA is at a minuscule 1.15 in 15.2 innings pitched. He too has been a pleasant surprise.
Pitcher of the Week:
For the second week in a row, it goes to Mike Rayl. Rayl continues to be stellar in the starting role after being a bullpen arm last year. As mentioned before, Rayl has only allowed two runs all season long (albeit, the season is a little more than two weeks old) and continues to pitch well. I expect him to be with Lake County all season.
