Around the Farm: July 24

Around the Farm takes a quick look at some of yesterday's performances by Indians prospects throughout the system. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday's game.

Tyler Cannon-3B, Kinston: 3-for-3, 2 R, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI, BB

Tyler Cannon was just a home run away from hitting for the cycle and reached base all four times he stepped up to the plate. Cannon has been particularly hot these past few days, notching his third multi-hit game in his past four. He's also knocked in at least two runs in three straight and a run in four straight. He's hitting .292 for the month of July with an on-base percentage of .333. For the year, Cannon has hit .292 between Lake County, Kinston, and six games with Akron. 

• Tim Fedroff-CF, Columbus: 1-for-3, 3 BB, SB: If the object of the game was to retire Tim Fedroff, the IronPigs would have lost. Unfortunately for the Clippers, it wasn't and they had just two hits all game. Fedroff had one of them, in addition to his three walks and stolen base.
• Joe Martinez-SP, Columbus: L (6-4), 6 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 6 K: A respectable start for Joe Martinez as he fills in a rotation shuffled due to injuries and major league call-ups. Certainly wasn't enough with no offense, but it was a quality start and he made Lehigh Valley beat him by not surrendering a walk. Can't fault that.
• Matt McBride-RF, Akron: 2-for-3, R, 2B, BB, SB: Unfortunately for Matt McBride, he's back in Akron, but he's making the most of it. He's continuing a hit-streak that he's bringing over from the end of June and with his two-hit game against Erie on Sunday, he's had at least two hits in five straight games. His total hit streak is up to 10 games.
• Chun Chen-C, Akron: 1-for-3, R, 3R HR, BB: Chen has turned his season around in July. The catcher from Taiwan has hit .322 in the month with three home runs and 14 RBI. His three-run blast on Sunday was his second straight game with a home run.
• Matt Packer-SP, Akron: 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 5 K: Packer exited the seventh inning and was promptly given the lead by Chen's blast. Putting the left-hander in line for his fifth win. However the Cory Burns ninth inning collapse ended that. Packer has gone at least seven frames in four straight starts and hasn't given up more than two runs in all of those games.
• Delvi Cid-CF, Kinston: 2-for-4, RBI, BB, 2 SB: Hey, Delvi Cid, he's pretty fast. We know Cid can swipe a bag, but he needed the two-hit game to break a 2-for-19 skid.
• Steven Wright-SP, Kinston: 6 IP, 10 H, 5 R (4 ER), 4 BB, 3 K: The life of a knuckleballer as they say. Wright gave up 10 hits and four walks, but how he got through six innings with just five runs is beyond me. Seems like a lot of traffic on the basepaths to deal with.
• Kyle Landis-RP, Kinston: W (5-0), 1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K: Kyle Landis picked up his fifth win by pitching into the eighth. Landis has given up just three runs with the K-Tribe this season in 28 innings. Maybe he deserves another crack at the Double-A level.
• Giovanny Urshela-3B, Lake County: 3-for-4, R, RBI, K: Urshela knocked in his 38th run of the season and is now hitting .295 for the month of July. He's been streaky, notching a few multi-hit games in his past 10, but couldn't seem to string together a few good games in a row this past week.
• Ronny Rodriguez-SS, Lake County: 2-for-4, 2 R, 2B, RBI, The young Dominican shortstop is definitely coming around at the plate. Having knocked in 12 runs this month, he's hitting and getting on base at a more consistent pace lately. 
• Brian Heere-LF, Lake County: 2-for-2, 2 RBI, BB: The outfielder has played a lot lately and is hot at the plate. He had a five-hit game earlier this week and after going 0-for-9 in his last three games, Heere was on base all three times against Cedar Rapids on Sunday. 
• Felix Sterling-SP, Lake County: W (1-0), 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 2 K: Simply Sterling... Making the jump from Arizona Rookie ball, Felix Sterling was impressive in his first start for the Captains. The right-hander from the Dominican Republic turned in a quality start and even picked up the win. With the rookie squad he was 2-3 with a 4.10 ERA in four starts. A nice start to his time with Lake County.
• Kyle Petter-RP, Lake County: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, 3 K: As good as he was with the Scrappers, Petter may be even better with the Captains. He pitched two more scoreless innings and hasn't given up a run since his initial two appearances for Lake County. He's struck out 26 hitters in 14 innings and has walked just three compared to the five in 7.2 innings with The Valley.
• Jordan Smith-3B, Mahoning Valley: 1-for-4, K: One of the three Scrappers hits belong to Jordan Smith, who is hitting .355 in 32 games with the Scrappers. Machine.
• Will Roberts-SP, Mahoning Valley: L (0-1), 4 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 3 K: In his third start for the Scrappers, Virginia product Will Roberts went four innings and gave up his first earned runs as a pro. Roberts had gone the previous 5.2 frames without a run given up, but was hit hard the third time around.
