Jesus Aguilar scored from third on throwing error by Heath Nichols the Kernals starter on a pickoff attempt at first base in the fourth inning, to make 2-0.
The Kernels scored in the fifth inning, when Jean Almanzar scored from first base following a fielding error on Brian Heere in leftfield.
Cole Cook (5-10) picked up the win tossing a six strong innings, allowing just one unearned run on four hits, walking one and striking out four. Heath Nichols (6-7) suffered the loss despite going seven innings allowing just two runs, one earned on five hits, walking one and striking out seven. Clayton Ehlert worked the ninth for his 11th save of the season.
Lake County continues their nine game home stand at Classic Park against Bowling Green at 7:00PM on Wednesday night. LHP Kirk Wetmore (1-0) will get the start for the Captains against RHP Jason McEachern (0-0) for the Hot Rods.
Clippers fall 4-1 at Lehigh Valley
The Clippers once again could not get the offense going as they dropped a 4-1 decision to the Iron Pigs of Lehigh Valley.
Like games 2 and 3 of this series, the Clippers fell behind early to Lehigh Valley. Rich Thompson led off the bottom of the first with a double to left field. Pete Orr followed with an infield single to put runners on 1st and 2nd with nobody out. Delyn Young then hit a groundball to second baseman Cord Phelps. They were able to get the out at second, but the throw to first from Clippers shortstop Jason Donald was low and got away from Columbus first baseman Beau Mills. Thompson scored on the play and gave Lehigh Valley a 1-0 lead. After a Brandon Moss groundout to first that allowed Young to move up to second and a Corey Clubber wild pitch that allowed Young to advance to third, Columbus got the raw end of a very questionable call from the home plate umpire. Kevin Frandsen was the batter for Lehigh Valley. A 1-2 pitch came in on Grandson who was attempting a bunt and it looked like the ball hit his bat and struck a part of his hand simultaneously. Home plate umpire Manny Gonzalez initially ruled it a foul ball, but then rewarded Grandson 1st base after he changed the call to being hit by a pitch. That bizarre call by Gonzalez allowed Josh Barfield to bat. Barfield took advantage of the opportunity, singling up the middle and knocking in Young to make it 2-0. Thankfully, the inning came to a close thanks to Clippers centerfielder Tim Fedroff and his canon of an arm.
The IronPigs would add to their lead. Erik Kratz walked and Cody Overbeck singled to begin the bottom half of the second. Clubber then walked Brian Bocock to the load the bases with nobody out. Rich Thompson hit a grounder to second, but Columbus was only able to get an out at second, allowing Kratz to score to make it 3-0 Lehigh Valley. Luckily, Clubber was able to escape further damage by striking out Pete Orr and getting Delyn Young to pop out to second to end the frame.
Another run would cross the plate for Lehigh Valley when Kratz scored on a Cody Overbeck RBI single up the middle, augmenting the IronPigs lead to 4-0.
In the top half of the 8th, Columbus would finally break through on the scoreboard. Clippers first baseman Beau Mills played a huge part in getting that run on the board as he crushed a solo shot to over the right field wall for his first ever dinger as a member of the Clippers, making it 4-1 Lehigh Valley at that point.
Unfortunately, that would be the only form of scoring for the Clippers as they were only able to muster three other hits besides the Mills home run as Lehigh Valley won 4-1, taking three out of four against Columbus in this series.
The Clippers will head to Upstate New York to begin a four game series with the Syracuse Chiefs. Justin Germano (0-2, 4.58 ERA) will start for Columbus. He will take on Syracuse starter Craig Stammen (8-4, 4.49). First pitch is scheduled 7:00 pm.
Big inning plagues Aeros
The Akron Aeros rallied for two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, but could not overcome a seven-run Trenton sixth inning as they lost game one of a three-game series against the Thunder 9-8 Monday at Canal Park.
Right-handed pitcher Adam Miller suffered the loss for Akron pitching an inning and one third out of the bullpen, allowing five earned runs on five hits, walking two and striking out none. Left-handed pitcher Drew Pomeranz got the start for the Aeros pitching 4.1 innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits, walking three and striking out six.
Switch pitcher Pat Venditte picked up the win for the Thunder tossing three innings of relief, allowing one earned run on two hits, walking one and striking out four. Right-hander Ryan Pope recorded the last four outs to earn the save.
The Aeros (54-49) got things started in the bottom of the first inning. Ben Copeland reached on a fielding error to open the inning and advanced to second on a Karexon Sanchez sacrifice bunt. Following a fly out, Chun Chen doubled him home to give the Aeros a 1-0 lead. Chen got to third when Raul Padron reached on a fielding error. Kyle Bellows followed with a single scoring Chen to make it 2-0.
The Thunder (54-48) got a run back in the top of the second inning. With two outs, Damon Sublett walked and advanced to second on a Jose Gil single. Addison Maruszak followed with an RBI single scoring Sublett and cutting the Akron lead to 2-1.
Maruszak tied the game 2-2 with an RBI double in the top of the fourth inning.
Akron retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ben Copeland led off with a double and advanced to third on a Sanchez single. Matt McBride doubled Copeland home to give the Aeros a 3-2 lead and chase Cory Arbiso from the game. Arbiso was replaced by Venditte, who allowed an RBI sacrifice fly to Chen to make it 4-2. Padron and Bellows followed with back-to-back RBI doubles to increase the Akron lead to 6-2.
The lead was short lived as Trenton rallied in the top of the sixth inning. Melky Mesa and Sublett opened the frame with back-to-back singles. Mesa scored on a double play to make it 6-3. Maruszak followed with a double and Yadil Mujica walked to put runners on first and second. Ray Kruml and Jose Pirela rapped back-to-back RBI singles to cut the Akron lead to 6-5. Following a pitching change, Zolio Almonte walked to load the bases. Rob Lyerly hit a ground-rule two RBI double scoring Kruml and Pirela and giving the Thunder a 7-6 lead. Trenton added two more runs in the inning to take a 9-6 lead.
Akron rallied for two in the bottom of the eighth inning, but drew no closer as Trenton went on to the win.
The Aeros and Thunder will continue their three-game series Tuesday. Akron will give the ball to left-handed pitcher T.J. McFarland, who is 7-4 with a 4.08 ERA in 2011. He will face right-handed pitcher Craig Heyer, who is 7-6 with a 4.09 ERA this season. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
K-Tribe streak comes to end
One big inning was the difference as Kinston's four-game win-streak came to an end 5-3 Monday Night in Winston-Salem.
Kinston starting pitcher Clayton Cook ran into trouble in the bottom of the third inning, as three hits and two walks led to four Dash runs. Nick Ciolli's two-out, two RBI double gave Winston-Salem a 4-0 lead. Cook was taken out of the game in the fourth inning, giving up four runs on four hits. Cook walked four and struck out four. Dash starter Matt Wickswat rolled into the top of the fourth, but his shutout was blown when Chase Burnette hit a two-run home run. The blast was Burnette's fourth homer of the season, following an Abraham single earlier in the inning. Wickswat would allow just one hit after the blast, going seven strong innings. Wickswat gave up five hits, while striking out eight.
Jose Flores kept Kinston close from the Indian's bullpen, giving up one run in 1 2/3 innings of work. Toru Murata was very strong in relief, getting Kinston out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth inning. Murata retired all five batters he faced, striking out two. Chris Jones pitched a scoreless eighth inning for Kinston.
Kinston managed a run without a hit in the eighth inning, when walks loaded the bases and Delvi Cid scored on a wild pitch. The Indian's managed just two hits after the Burnette's homer, however, dropping the first game of the series. Abraham was 2-for-4 for Kinston.
The K-Tribe continues the series with the Dash Tuesday night at 7pm. Brett Brach will get the start for Kinston at BB&T Ballpark.
Scrappers get shutout
Mahoning Valley was shut out by Hudson Valley by a score of 2-0 on Monday night. With the loss the Scrappers fall to 21-17 on the year and a game out of first place in the Pinckney Division.
Lefty Daniel Jimenez had a quality start going six strong innings and allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out six. Nate Striz came on in relief with two perfect innings.
At the plate the offense struggled throughout the game to put anything together as the Scrappers managed just six hits and one walk as a team. Shortstop Tony Wolters went 1-for-3 with a double and walk and catcher Alex Lavisky with 1-for-4 with a double.

Weglarz hasn't played in a week. Injury or due to his struggles at the plate?
I posted an update on Weglarz today in a separate post. Minor eye injury.
