The Akron Aeros banged out six hits and scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as they came back to beat the Erie SeaWolves 8-6 in game two of a four-game series Saturday at Canal Park.
Right-handed pitcher Mark Sorensen allowed all six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and suffered the loss for Erie.
Right-hander Tyler Sturdevant pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win for the Aeros allowing one hit and striking out two. Left-handed pitcher T.J. McFarland made the start for Akron pitching five innings, giving up four earned runs on five hits, walking three and striking out five.
The SeaWolves (42-46) got on the board in the top of the second inning. Michael Bertram led off with a double and Bryan Holaday walked to put runners on first and second. When Justin Henry struck out, Bertram and Holaday pulled off the double steal to put runners on second and third. Shawn Roof followed with a two-RBI single to give Erie a 2-0 lead. Roof moved to second when Jamie Johnson walked. Brandon Douglas scored Roof with an RBI single to make it 3-0. Rawley Bishop followed with a sacrifice fly to score Johnson and give the SeaWolves a 4-0 lead.
Beau Mills blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning that cleared the bleachers in right field and cut the Erie lead to 4-2.
The Aeros (46-43) erupted in the bottom of the sixth inning. Juan Diaz led off with a double. With one out, Chun Chen singled him home to cut the SeaWolves lead to 4-3. Chen moved to second on a Nick Weglarz single. Raul Padron followed with an RBI double scoring Chen and tying the game 4-4. Sorenesen was lifted for Luis Marte following the Padron double. Marte walked Tyler Cannon to load the bases. Ben Copeland followed with a two-RBI double to give the Aeros a 6-4 lead. Following the double, Cannon scored on a throwing error to make it 7-4. Akron added another run to make it 8-4.
Erie scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning, but drew no closer as the Aeros went on to the win.
The Aeros and SeaWolves will continue their four-game series Sunday. Akron will give the ball to right-handed pitcher Paolo Espino, who is 4-0 with a 2.82 ERA in 2011. He will face left-handed pitcher Ramon Garcia, who is 2-3 with a 5.14 ERA this season. First pitch is at 1:05 p.m.
Toledo slows Clippers bats
The Mud Hens beat the Clippers for the second straight night as Columbus dropped a 5-2 decision to Toledo.
The night started off well for the Clippers when Ezequiel Carrera led the game off with an infield hit. Carrera would then move up to second base on a Jason Donald single to left field. That would bring Cord Phelps to the plate. Phelps did not help the cause as he grounded into a 4-6-3 double play. Carrera was able to advance to third and while Chad Huffman was batting, the Clippers capitalized on a bit of wildness from Mud Hens starter Andrew Oliver as Carrera came into to score on a wild pitch. So the Clippers were able to grab a 1-0 lead.
That lead would not last long for Columbus. In the bottom half of the first, Timo Perez and Carlos Guillen both walked to put runners on 1st and second with one out. After a Ryan Strieby strikeout, Ben Guez came through for Toledo with a soft line drive that just eluded the glove of Clippers centerfielder Tim Fedroff. The RBI single by Guez tied at the ballgame at 1-1. Luckily, it stayed that way as Clippers lefthander David Huff struck out Argenis Diaz to end the inning.
The Clippers looked to regain the lead in the top of the third. Ezequiel Carrera and Jason Donald started the inning off with singles to put runners on first and second with nobody out. After a Cord Phelps flyout to rightfield that allowed Carrera to move up to third safely, Chad Huffman helped drive home Carrera and get the lead back for Columbus. Carrera came home to score on the Huffman sacrifice fly and the Clippers found themselves leading again, this time by a 2-1 margin.
The bottom of the seventh turned out to be a rough frame for Columbus reliever Carlton Smith. Mud Hens shortstop Cale Iorg led off the inning with a double. Smith would walk the next batter, Max St.Pierre and the very next batter he would face, Will Ryhmes, reached on a bunt single. So the bases would be loaded with nobody out. Timo Perez came up to bat and hit into a 6-4-3 double play. It allowed Iorg to score and tie the contest at 2-2. Carlos Guillen then took his turn batting and delivered for Toledo by smacking an RBI double down the left field line, driving in St.Pierre and giving the Mud Hens the lead 3-2. Smith was pulled for Zach Putnam. Putnam was able to get out of the inning, but the eighth inning proved to be a difficult for the Clippers reliever.
Ben Guez led off the bottom of the eighth with a double. After an Argenis Diaz pop out in foul territory, Clete Thomas knocked in Guez with an RBI single to extend the Toledo lead to 4-2. After Thomas stole second, Cale Iorg knocked in Thomas with an RBI single to augment the Mud Hens advantage to 5-2.
In the top of the ninth, the Clippers went down 1-2-3, losing their second game in as many nights to the Mud Hens.
The Clippers and Mud Hens will conclude their short two game series and the first half of the season on Sunday night. Columbus lefthander Scott Barnes (7-3) will face Toledo starter L.J. Gagne (1-3). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
Captains Fall 7-6 to the Lugnuts
A ground ball hit Garis Pena to the shortstop Ronny Rodriguez was misplayed scoring Bryson Namba in the eighth inning, as Lansing rallied back for a 7-6 win over Lake County.
Lansing took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning; Marcus Knecht drove in his 45th run of the season with a sacrifice fly to left.
Garis Pena led the third inning off with a double for the Lugnuts and came around and scored following an error and a wild pitch to make it 2-0.
Lake County took a 3-2 lead in the fourth. Giovanny Urshela doubled and scored following a Sean Nolin throwing error on a ball hit by Jordan Casas. Kevin Fontanez in his Captains debut, singled in Casas to tie the game up at two. Fontanez scored on a LeVon Washington RBI ground out.
In the fifth inning, Jake Marisnick connected on his seventh homerun of the season, a two run shot giving Lansing the lead back at 4-3.
The Captains’ Carlos Moncrief led the seventh inning off with a triple to centerfield. Alex Monsalve doubled to center, scoring Moncrief and trying the game up at four. Monsalve came around and scored on a fielding error on Matt Nuzzo. Giovanny Urshela would score on a Pena throwing error giving Lake County a 6-4 lead.
The Lugnuts lead the eighth inning off with a single by Knecht and moved to second on a wild pitch. A two out base hit by Lance Durham cut the lead in half. Bryson Namba tripled to left center scoring Durham to tie the game at six.
Brandon Berl (2-0) picked up the win despite allowing three runs, one earned on two hits, walking one and striking out three in just 1.2 innings. Dayton Marze pitched the final two innings for his fourth save of the season. Nick Sarianides (4-4) suffered the loss, allowing three runs, two earned on three hits, no walks and three strike outs in 1.2 innings of work.
Lake County and Lansing will continue their three game set on Sunday night at 7:00PM at Classic Park. Making the start for the Captains will be LHP Mike Rayl (5-2) against LHP Egan Smith (3-3) for the Lugnuts.
Scrappers win again, 4-3
The Mahoning Valley Scrappers won their second game in a row over Williamsport by a score of 4-3 on Saturday night. With the win they are now 14-9 on the season and one game out of first place in the NY-Penn League's Pinckney Division.
Lefty Danny Jimenez was great again for the Scrappers throwing five strong innings allowing just one run on four hits, three walks, and had one strikeout. In seven appearances covering 19.2 innings he has a 0.92 ERA, though has given up 17 hits and 10 walks over that span. Righty Enosil Tejada was shaky again in the ninth inning allowing two runs in his one inning of work but was able to hold on for his second save of the season.
The Scrappers were led at the plate by shortstop Tony Wolters who went 2-for-4 with an RBI and outfielder Aaron Siliga chipped in with a 2-for-4 effort with a triple.
