Scrappers defeat Tigers in final at bat

KC Serna singled in Evan Frazar in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Scrappers beat the Tigers 2-1 on Wednesday night. The two teams received great pitching performances, with Brennan Smith throwing seven innings of one-run ball for Connecticut and Jeanmar Gomez and Joseph Colon combining for nine innings of one-run ball for Mahoning Valley.

Gomez, making a start for the Scrappers after pitching for the Columbus Clippers and Cleveland Indians this year, picked up a no-decision. He threw four innings and allowed one run on five hits, no walks, and had three strikeouts.

Everyone in the Scrappers lineup had at least one hit in a balanced 11-hit attack. Third baseman Evan Frazar and center fielder Cody Elliott were the only ones to put up multi-hit efforts.

The Tigers scored first with a run in the top of the fourth inning. The Scrappers answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game. The Scrappers had nine hits – all singles – off Smith and reliever Ryan Woolley.

Colon picks up the win to improve to 2-2. Woolley picks up the loss to fall to 0-2. The Scrappers and Tigers will play game two of their three-game series on Thursday night at 7:05 pm.

Kinston rained out

Wednesday’s game scheduled to start at 7:05 has been postponed due to weather. Pfitzner Stadium received an onslaught of heavy rains this afternoon, making the surface unplayable by game time. The game will be played as part of a doubleheader Thursday afternoon.

Kinston and Potomac begin the four game series Thursday with two seven inning games to start at 6:00 pm. Clayton Cook is scheduled to take the mound for the Indians while former Yankee phenom Chien-Ming Wang is set to make a rehab start for the Nats.

Chiefs Take Down Captains 4-2

Chiefs’ Richard Jones singled to leftfield driving in the go ahead run giving Peoria a 3-2 lead. The Chief defeated Lake County 4-2 on Wednesday night.

In the fourth inning, Ben Klafczyski singled in Ryan Cuneo with two outs giving Peoria a 1-0 lead.

Ronny Rodriguez lead off the Captains fifth inning with a single to left center. Kevin Fontanez laid down a sacrifice bunt, but a throwing error on pitcher Alvaro Sosa allowed Rodriguez to score from first and Fontanez to go to third. Moises Montero gave Lake County the lead 2-1 with a sacrifice fly to leftfield.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Cuneo’s two-out RBI double to right field scoring Rubi Silva from first to tie the game up at one.

Chiefs’ Sosa (3-1) picked up the win tossing two innings in relief allowing two unearned run on one hit while striking two. Brent Ebinger picked up his second save of the season pitching a perfect ninth. Mike Goodnight (5-8) took the loss, allowing three runs on nine hits in five innings of action, walking three and striking two.

Lake County and Peoria will continue their three game set on Thursday night at O’Brien Field at 8:00PM. The Captains will start RHP Cole Cook (3-9) against LHP Austin Kirk (5-5) for the Chiefs.

Note: Columbus and Akron were off for the last day of their break and to play their respective league's All Star games.

Tony,

I noticed that 27th round draft choice Evan Frazar of the Scrappers played 3B last night, and in his 3 games, has played 3B twice and DH'ed once.

I seem to recall the write up on IPI saying that when he was drafted the Indians wanted Frazar listed as a SS, apparently trying to eliminate speculation that he might be moved to 3B. Yet, that is in fact what appears to have happened.

Do you know whether 3B is intended to be Frazar's permanent position?

I would have to think Mr. Wolters at shortstop has a lot to do with that. Will probably see him mix in to several different positions for now until next year. But they like is ability at shortstop....although that can quickly change here between now and next season.
