Around the Farm: September 14

Around the Farm takes a quick look at some of yesterday's performances by Indians prospects throughout the system. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday's (playoff) game.

Jerad Head - LF, Columbus: 3-for-5, 2 R, HR, 6 RBI, K.
Mr. September is at it again. Last year Head was the Eastern League Finals MVP for Double-A Akron after hitting .345 with 0 HR, 9 RBI and a 1.065 OPS in seven playoff games, and so far this postseason in five games Head is hitting a blistering .444 with 1 HR, 8 RBI, and a 1.190 OPS. His postseason performance last year and this year has bookended a really fine 2010 regular season where in 86 combined games between Akron and Columbus he hit .299/.357/.550 with 17 HR and 66 RBI in 311 at bats. He is too old to be a prospect (turns 28 in November), but he has potential to be a major league depth option as soon as next year because of his versatility to play all the infield and outfield corner positions.

Clippers lineup: 20-42, 18 R, 3 2B, 3B, 4 HR, 18 RBI, 4 BB, 5 K.
A record setting performance by the entire lineup as the 18 runs scored broke the Columbus franchise postseason record of 15. Every starter had at least two hits, and eight of the nine starters had at least one RBI. They were 9-for-18 with runners in scoring position and left just five men on base. It was just a near-perfect balanced performance from a lineup you can get.  Kudos.

David Huff - SP, Columbus: 7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R (0 ER), 0 BB, 5.
Finished his season on a VERY high note with one of his best outings - if not the best - of the season. Even with his impressive performance in Columbus this year, being on the Indians 40-man roster, and the Indians maybe in need of a starter with Mitch Talbot possibly hurt and Justin Masteron close to his innings limit, it still appears very likely that he is not coming to Cleveland.

• Aaron Laffey - RP, Columbus: 1.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R/ER, BB, K, HR. Served up a grand salami in a disasterous 8th inning of relief when score was 17-1. Looking more and more like he will not be on Indians 40-man roster come the start of next season.
• Wes Hodges - 1B, Columbus: 2-for-3, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI. Got things going and set the tone on the night with a big 2-run homer in 1st inning.
• Jared Goedert - 3B, Columbus: 3-for-5, 3 R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI. Offensive thunder has returned lately, but throwing issues on defense still plague him as he had yet another throwing error at third base.
• Luke Carlin - C, Columbus: 2-for-4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI, BB. Having a memorable postseason hitting .500 with several big hits.
• Jason Kipnis - DH, Columbus: 2-for-4, 3 R, BB, K. Very good Triple-A debut in an emergency callup for the highly regarded Tribe infield prospect.
• Vidal Nuno - SP, Lake County: 5.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R/ER, 3 BB, 6 K. Clutch start for the versatile Nuno, who continues to put forth consistent outing after consistent outing.
• Jeremy Johnson - RHP, Lake County: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K. Stifled the Loons 7th inning rally with another great performance, and especially great considering he is pitching with a fractured back.
• Casey Frawley - SS, Lake County: 2-for-5, R, HR, RBI, K. Another solid offensive performance by one of the Captains' offensive mainstays all year.
• Argenis Martinez - 2B, Lake County: 2-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBI. Crucial RBI groundout in 2nd inning to put Captains up 1-0, and then RBI single in 4th to put Captains up 4-1.
