West Michigan evened up the three game series at one with an 8-0 win over Lake County on Thursday night. The deciding game three is Friday September 10th at 6:30PM at Classic Park.
The WhiteCaps pounded out 19 hits in a must win situation scoring a run in the second, three times in the fifth, and added four more in the eighth. Corey Jones went 3-for-6 on the night driving in three runs for the West Michigan. Clay Jones drove in the game's first run with an RBI double in the second inning.
The Captains finished with just four hits and went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. Tyler Holt was the only player in the line-up to reach base twice finishing 1-for-3 with a walk.
WhiteCaps' starter Trevor Feeney (1-0) picked up the win tossing 8.1 scoreless innings giving up just four hits and striking out six. Vidal Nuno (0-1) took the loss giving up four runs on nine hits, striking out seven.
Lake County and West Michigan will play game three Friday night at 6:30PM. The Captains will start RHP Jason Knapp (1-0) against RHP Jared Wesson (7-4) for the WhiteCaps.
Yankees tie series with extra-inning win, 5-4
They played extra innings for the second straight night at Huntington Park, but this time it was the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees getting the better end of it, evening their best-of-five series with the Clippers by winning, 5-4 in 10 innings. Columbus left 14 base runners stranded on the night, leaving the bases loaded twice in the late innings.
Justin Christian hit his second home run in as many days for the Yankees, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Two batters later, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Manager Dave Miley was ejected for arguing a force-out call at second base.
Chad Huffman, who has an average over .500 in nine games against the Clippers this season, continued that trend with a two-run homer in the sixth. Eric Bruntlett then made it back-to-back shots and a 4-0 lead. That chased Columbus starter Zach McAllister, whose final three runs allowed were all unearned.
On the other side, David Phelps allowed just one Columbus hit through five innings. He ran into trouble in the sixth, though, in the form of a Wes Hodges two-run long ball. The Clippers chased Phelps in the seventh with a double and a walk to start the inning. Then, after a Jose Constanza sacrifice bunt, Ezequiel Carrera walked to load the bases for Cord Phelps, who also earned a free pass, after fouling off multiple full-count pitches, scoring Luke Carlin.
A pair of strikeouts ended the threat in the seventh, however, but the Clippers loaded the bases again in the eighth. The third walk of the inning, issued to Carrera, scored Jared Head with the game-tying run. Cord Phelps struck out to end the inning.
In the tenth, Reid Gorecki walked, stole second (for the third time in the game), and then scored on Kevin Russo's single. Kevin Whelan earned the victory for the Yankees, with John Van Benschoten earning the save by pitching around a pair of walks (the Yankees issued 12 of them on the night). Saul Rivera took the loss for Columbus.
The scene for game three will shift to PNC Field in Moosic, PA, with Columbus sending Yohan Pino (10-9, 5.75) to the hill against Yankees left-hander Kei Igawa (3-4, 4.32). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
K-Tribe Faces Elimination After Shutout Loss
Dylan Axelrod threw seven shutout innings to lead Winston-Salem to a 2-0 win over Kinston in game two of the Southern Division Championship Series on Thursday night in Winston. The Dash leads the best-of-five-series 2-0 as the series travels to Kinston on Friday night for game three.
It was a pitcher’s duel early as Kinston starter Austin Adams and Winston-Salem’s Dylan Axelrod were fantastic on the hill. Axelrod (1-0) held the K-Tribe to two hits in seven scoreless innings. He walked one and struck out nine, at one point retiring 19 batters in a row.
Adams was fantastic through the first four innings, striking out five and giving up just one hit. Adams ran into trouble in the fifth inning, when Jason Bour and Drew Garcia both walked with one out. Kyle Shelton then delivered a bloop base hit to right field to score Bour. Greg Paiml made it 2-0 Dash when he delivered an RBI groundout to score Garcia. Adams (0-1) went 4 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on two hits. He walked two and struck out five.
Kinston was held without a hit for 19 batters after Jeremie Tice’s single in the first. That stretch was broken up by Kyle Bellows, who led off the eighth inning with a double to left. Axelrod walked Abner Abreu and was removed from the game. Brandon Kloess came on in relief and gave up a two-out single to Donnie Webb. With the bases loaded, Bo Greenwell grounded out to keep the score 2-0 in favor of Winston.
Chris Jones worked three scoreless innings of relief for the K-Tribe and limited the Dash to one hit. He struck out one. Matt Langwell came on for the final out of the bottom of the eighth.
Tyson Corley worked the ninth inning for the Dash and pitched around Sanchez’s leadoff single for his second save in as many nights.
Playoff baseball returns to Eastern North Carolina as The K-Tribe will take on the Dash in game three of the best of five series Friday night at 7 pm at Historic Grainger Stadium. Carolina League All-Star and wins leader Joe Gardner (12-6, 2.65) will take the mound for Kinston against Winston-Salem’s Nate Jones (11-6, 4.08). Game four (if necessary) will be Saturday night at Historic Grainger Stadium at 7 pm also.

Yeah, gotta like our chances with Knapp and Gardner....but the offense also has to put up some runs!
