K-Tribe Splits Double Dip

In the first inning of game one, Tyler Moore hit an RBI single to left to give the Nationals a 1-0 lead. K-Tribe starter Joe Gardner retired 13 in a row until the sixth inning, when Francisco Soriano walked and Derek Norris hit an RBI single to make it 2-0.

The K-Tribe answered in the third against Nationals starter Carlos Martinez. Alex Castillo walked, Justin Toole reached on an error and Bo Greenwell singled to load the bases. Donnie Webb hit an RBI groundout to tie the game at one.

Martinez left the game after four innings and took a no-decision. He gave up an unearned run on five hits, walked one and struck out two.

Kinston took the lead in the fifth against Potomac reliever Justin Phillabaum. With two outs, Webb and Chen drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Abner Abreu hit a bases-clearing triple to put the K-Tribe on top 4-1. Bo Greenwell hit a three-run homer to right in the sixth to make it 7-1. Greenwell was 4-for-4, with his team-leading third four-hit game of the season.

Adams pitched five innings, holding the Nationals to a run on four hits. He walked two and struck out seven.

Potomac rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Jose Lozada and Nick Moresi each had RBI groundouts, and Sean Nicol scored from third on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 7-4.

Cory Burns gave up a run in the ninth but held on for his Carolina League-leading 29th save in 32 chances. His 41 combined saves this season are third-best in all of Minor League Baseball.

Rally falls short, Clippers lose, 6-4

A four-run fifth inning did the Clippers in on Saturday night in Toledo, but they held on to the International League West Division lead, thanks to a Louisville loss in Indianapolis. The Mud Hens held off a late rally to win, 6-4.

The Clippers fell behind in the second inning, but got that run back with Luke Carlin's lead-off home run in the third. Andy Dirks answered Carlin's blast with one of his own, however, in the bottom half of that same frame.

The big fifth inning from the Mud Hens turned a one-run deficit into a five-run discrepancy. The inning featured a little bit of everything, including four hits (two for extra bases) and a run-producing error. Columbus starter Yohan Pino (10-9) would get out of the inning, but his night ended there, with five earned runs scoring on 11 hits.

The Clippers rallied for three runs in the eighth, with back-to-back doubles from Jared Goedert (2-RBI) and Jerad Head (1-RBI) doing the damage. They would get the first two men of the ninth inning to reach base, but Ezequiel Carrera hit into a double play (Columbus' league-high 145th of 2010) and Cord Phelps struck out to end the threat.

With two games left in the regular season, the Clippers lead Louisville by a half-game. The winner of that race will host Durham in the Governor's Cup playoffs on Wednesday, while the loser will draw Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Paolo Espino will look to right the ship for the Clippers on Sunday. The righty is 3-2, with a 4.30 earned run average in Triple A, and he'll battle Thad Weber (1-1, 1.80), with the first pitch slated for 6 p.m. from Fifth Third Field.

Aeros Lose in Extra Frames Again

Akron gave up a two-run lead in extra innings on a pair of home runs to fall to Erie 5-4 on Saturday night at Jerry Uht Park. The Aeros (70-70) are now 1-10 in extra inning games this season. Erie (65-75) has now given Akron its fourth straight loss.

The Aeros jumped on top with a run in the second inning when first baseman Miguel Perez doubled to left-center field and crossed home plate three batters later on a ground out by left fielder Lucas Montero. Akron built their lead in the fourth when Montero hit an RBI-single to score Perez again.

Erie responded in the fourth after Brandon Jones scored on a bases-loaded walk and John Murrian hit a sacrifice fly to score Rawley Bishop to tie the game at 2-2.

The Aeros regained control and separated themselves from the SeaWovles in the 10th. With the bases full, Perez reached first base safely on a fielding error by Brent Wyatt that allowed catcher Juan Apodaca and third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall cross home and make the score 4-2.

Murrian then led off with a solo home run to bring the SeaWolves within one. After Matt Mansilla singled, Wyatt ended the game with a walk-off home run to right field on a 3-2 pitch.

Right-handed reliever Omar Aguilar took the loss and fell to 2-7 after giving up the three runs and three hits in the final frame. Cory Hamilton earned the win for Erie and improved to 4-1.

Akron will attempt to end its four-game skid on Sunday as they send right-handed pitcher Steven Wright (2-1, 4.53 ERA) to the mound to square off against Brooks Brown (11-9, 4.35 ERA).

Scrappers fall to Jammers, 6-4

Jamestown scored four times in the bottom of the fourth inning off Ryan Gardner that proved to be the difference. Gardner allowed another run in the top of the fifth inning and took the loss for the Scrappers lasting just one inning and giving up five runs.

Zachary Neal got the win for the Jammers pitching five innings and allowing three unearned runs. Jared Rogers made his Jammers' debut and earned the save.

The Jammers scored a run in the top of the third inning, but the Scrappers answered in the bottom of the frame. With one out, Aaron Fields drew a walk and then stole a base with Brian Heere at the plate. Heere later reached on a Brent Keys error moving Fields to third base. Kevin Fontanez followed reaching on an error that allowed Fields to score to tie the game.

Giovanny Urshela singled home Heere and Jesus Aguilar doubled in Fontanez to give the Scrappers a 3-1 lead.

The Jammers answered right back in the top of the fourth inning off Gardner scoring four times and adding an insurance run in the top of the fifth inning to retake the lead 6-3.

The Scrapper added a run on a Jesus Aguilar RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Rogers shut the door to earn the save and give the Jammers the win.
