Around the Farm: September 15

Around the Farm takes a quick look at some of yesterday's performances by Indians prospects throughout the system. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday's (playoff) game. Columbus is now up 2-0 in their best-of-five series and can win the Governor's Cup with a win tonight, and Lake County is up 1-0 in their best-of-five series and play again tonight in Clinton before coming home to finish out the series starting Saturday night.

Preston Guilmet - RP, Lake County: 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K.
Like with shutdown corners in football, Guilmet has been a shutdown closer this year. This was his fourth save of the postseason for him in as many chances, and in his four appearances this postseason he has gone 8.0 innings and allowed 0 runs, 2 hits, 1 walk, and has 13 strikeouts. Batters only hit .188 off him in the regular season and he had a 2.25 ERA in 30 appearances, and combined with his postseason numbers he has now thrown 60.0 innings and walked just 11 batters while punching out 92. Those are some pretty impressive peripheral numbers.
  • Cord Phelps - 2B, Columbus: 2-for-3, R, HR, RBI, BB, SB. After a record setting night on Tuesday offensively by the Clippers, runs and hits were at a premium. Phelps was the offensive star of the night.
  • Jason Kipnis - DH, Columbus: 1-for-4, 2B, K. His second Triple-A game, and his double in the first inning almost scored Wes Hodges who was cut down at home.
  • Jared Goedert - 3B, Columbus: 1-for-4, R, HR, RBI. Go-Go Goedert now with back-to-back games with a homer.
  • Jerad Head - LF, Columbus: 1-for-3, R, HR, RBI. Ever heard of Jim Leyritz? Mark Lemke? Head may be that kind of ordinary player in the regular season who just has a knack of coming up big in the postseason.
  • Jose Constanza - OF, Columbus: 1-for-4, R, K, SB. Stole home on a well executed double steal in the 5th inning to tally the Clippers final run.
  • Zach McAllister - SP, Columbus: 7.0 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K. Had a rough year as a 22-year old in Triple-A with a 9-12 record and 5.29 ERA in 27 regular season starts, but this was his best start of the year and nice to see in a big game.
  • Zach Putnam - RP, Columbus: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. Has now gone 17.1 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run, which covers the last ten games of the season and three postseason appearances.
  • Vinnie Pestano - RP, Columbus: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K. Has only allowed runs in 6 of his 46 appearances this year with Columbus, and allowed just three runs in last 28.1 innings. Has 45Ks and 9 BBs in that span.
  • Casey Frawley - SS, Lake County: 3-for-5, R, 2B, 2 RBI. Most consistent Captains contributor all season has continued his success into the postseason.
  • Roberto Perez - C, Lake County: 1-for-2, R, 2 BB, K. Quickly growing into walk machine with 80 in regular season and now 4 in postseason.
  • Jason Smit - 1B, Lake County: 1-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBI, K. Big 2-RBI single in 8th finished Captains comeback and put them in the lead for good.
  • Jason Knapp - SP, Lake County: 3.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R/ER, 0 BB, 6 K. Short night because of a restricted pitch count, but you have to like the no walks and 6 punchouts.
  • Nick Kirk - RP, Lake County: 2.1 IP, 7 H, 4 R (3 ER), 0 BB, 4 K, HR. Including the postseason, in 11 appearances with Lake County he has thrown 16.0 innings and allowed 24 hits and 15 runs. Not good, though 19 Ks over that span is nice.
