Game Recap 9/5: K-Tribe pitchers combine for no-hitter

Indians No-Hit Potomac in 1-0 Win

Marty Popham, Chris Jones and Cory Burns combined on a ten inning no-hitter and Doug Pickens delivered the game-winning RBI single in Kinston’s 1-0 win over Potomac on Sunday afternoon in Woodbridge, Virginia. The no-hitter was nearly six years to the day after the last K-Tribe no-hitter, Keith Ramsey’s perfect game against Myrtle Beach on September 6, 2004.

Popham was perfect through six innings, but the perfect game was broken up when Francisco Soriano walked to start the seventh inning. Popham allowed another walk but got out of the jam to finish seven hitless innings. He walked two and struck out eight, at one point striking out six consecutive hitters.

Chris Jones came on and pitched two hitless innings of relief, walked one and struck out two. Cory Burns pitched a perfect tenth inning to complete the no-hitter and pick up his league-leading 30th save in 33 chances. He has 42 combined saves this season, the third-most in all of Minor League Baseball.

Jimmy Barthmaier did his part for Potomac, shutting out the Indians on four hits in five innings. Joe Testa threw three hitless innings in relief. Kinston finally came through to break the scoreless tie in the top of the tenth against reliever Zach Dials. Abner Abreu led off with a single and moved to second on Juan Diaz’s sacrifice bunt. Doug Pickens lined an RBI single into center field to give the K-Tribe a 1-0 lead and set the stage for Burns to finish the no-no.

It was Kinston’s first combined no-hitter since August of 1991, when Paul Byrd, Scott Morgan and Mike Soper combined to no-hit Prince William.

The K-Tribe wraps up the regular season in Woodbridge on Labor Day with a 1:05 pm start. Kinston’s starting pitcher is to be announced.

Clippers fall again, but can win division Monday

After a five-game winning streak helped clinch a spot in the postseason, the Clippers are sputtering toward the regular-season finish line. The Toledo Mud Hens made it three-in-a-row over Columbus with a 9-1 blowout win Sunday at Fifth Third Field.

The Mud Hens hit for the cycle as a team in the first inning, with a five-hit, five-run frame featuring a lead-off home run from Scott Sizemore and a three-run double from Andy Bouchie.

They added three more in the fourth against Columbus starter Paolo Espino (3-3), who struggled to get through four innings of work. The big hit in the frame was a two-run single from Michael Bertram. Another Toledo run came home in the sixth, when Scott Sizemore, who doubled to lead off the inning (his third hit of the night), scored on an Andy Dirks double (his third hit of the night, too).

Offensively, the Clippers were held in check by Toledo starter Thad Weber (2-1), who didn't allow a run until Wes Hodges led off the seventh inning with his 15th home run of 2010.

The Clippers held on to their division lead, as International League West foe Louisville lost to Indianapolis for the second straight night. A Columbus win, or a Louisville loss, will clinch the division for the Clippers on Monday.

The regular-season finale is slated for 1 p.m. on Labor Day, with Columbus right-hander Corey Kluber (1-0, 1.50) scheduled to pitch opposite Toledo southpaw Ryan Ketchner (5-4, 3.87).
