K-Tribe Clinches Playoff Berth; Falls 10-5 to Keys

Kinston fell 10-5 to Frederick on Friday night, but Salem’s loss to Potomac clinched the K-Tribe a spot in the Carolina League playoffs for the first time since 2007. The Southern Division series will start next Wednesday at 7 pm in Winston-Salem against the first half champion Dash.

The Keys got on the board in the first inning on back-to-back RBI singles by L.J. Hoes and Tyler Townsend to take a 2-0 lead.

Kinston tied the game in the top of the fourth on a two-run homer to center by Abner Abreu. It was Abreu’s fourth homer of the season and first since June 28.

Frederick rallied to regain the lead in the bottom of the inning. Luis Bernardo was hit by a pitch, Jonathan Schoop walked and Kyle Hudson reached on an error on House to load the bases. Bobby Stevens was hit by a pitch to bring a run home. Billy Rowell had an RBI single but Kyle Hudson was thrown out trying to score for the second out. David Roberts came on to relieve House and surrendered an RBI single to Hoes to make it 5-2.

House (6-10) gave up five runs, three earned on six hits in 3 2/3 innings for the loss. He walked four and struck out three.

The Keys added a run in the fifth on Jonathan Schoop’s RBI single to make it 6-2. The K-Tribe answered in the sixth on Donnie Webb’s two-run homer to cut the lead to 6-4. However, Frederick came back in the bottom of the inning with RBI doubles by Billy Rowell and Tyler Townsend to make it 8-4.

Kinston scored on Chun Chen’s RBI groundout in the seventh to cut the lead to 8-5. Frederick added two more in the seventh on Welty’s RBI single and Rowell’s sac fly to make it 10-5.

Frederick starter Oliver Drake (6-6) went six innings for the win, giving up four runs on eight hits. He walked two and struck out six.

Kinston will finish the regular season with four games in three days at Potomac, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday. Joe Gardner will start game one and Austin Adams will throw game two, with the twin bill starting at 5:03 pm.

Streak ends with home finale loss, 5-3

The Clippers couldn't close out the regular season at Huntington Park on a high note, but fortunately they'll get another chance to play in front of a Columbus crowd next week. Toledo took game two of a two-city, five-game series on Friday night, 5-3.

The Mud Hens got the scoring started early, when Scott Sizemore tripled to lead-off the ballgame and then came home on a groundout. Toledo then added to their lead in the fourth inning, scoring thanks to a pair of misplayed fly balls in the outfield, but Columbus starter Zach McAllister limited the damage to just one run.

Jared Head, who rejoined the Clippers from Akron earlier Friday, hit a two-run double in the bottom half of the fourth to tie the score.

Two innings later, however, McAllister (9-12) ran into trouble, giving up three runs on four hits. He departed after the sixth inning and his final line included five runs off of nine hits with five strikeouts.

Columbus got one of those three runs back in the bottom half of the sixth, on a mammoth Wes Hodges home run, his 14th of the season. That, however, is as close as they would get in their quest to win their 80th game of 2010. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak.

Coupled with Louisville's victory over Indianapolis, the Columbus lead in the International League West Division fell to a half-a-game. The Clippers have at least clinched the wild card spot in the Governor's Cup playoffs.

The Clippers and Mud Hens will head to Toledo to close out the regular season, with the first of three from the Glass City scheduled for Saturday night at 7 p.m. Yohan Pino (10-8, 5.63) will start for Columbus against fellow righty L.J. Gagnier (6-7, 3.61).

No Post-Season for Aeros after 10-5 Defeat

Akron was eliminated from playoff contention as Erie defeated them 10-5 Friday night at Jerry Uht Park. It is the first time since 2004 that the Aeros (70-69) will miss the post-season. The SeaWolves improve to 64-75.

The SeaWolves scored first in the opening inning when Rawley Bishop hit a sacrifice fly to score Brandon Douglas. Erie eventually made the score 2-0 as Douglas walked and then scored on a double by Brandon Jones.

Erie broke the game open in the sixth with a seven-run outburst to deflate the Aeros. The SeaWolves scored the first two runs of the rally on a two-RBI single up the middle by Kyle Peter that scored Billy Nowlin and Deik Scram. Brent Wyatt soon followed that up with a three-run home run to make the score 7-0. Bishop hit in the final two runs of the frame with a single to right center that scored Douglas and Matt Mansilla.

Akron eventually got on the board when third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall tripled to right field before scoring on a throwing error by Douglas in the seventh to set the score at 9-1. However, Erie would get the run back in the eighth when Douglas scored on a Bishop ground out.

The Aeros did not go down easy as they put together a rally in the ninth as first baseman Miguel Perez scored on another throwing error by Douglas. Shortstop Ron Rivas highlighted the inning with a three-run home run to right field to make the score 10-5, but that would be the closest Akron would get.

Left-handed starter Scott Barnes to fall to 6-11 after he gave up five runs on five hits with eight strikeouts against four walks in 5.2 innings pitched. Duane Below earned the win to improve to 7-12 with one run on two hits with four strikeouts and one walk over 6.1 innings.

Akron can still secure at least a .500 record on the season with one win in the remaining three games. The Aeros will attempt to do that Saturday with left-handed pitcher Eric Berger (6-5, 4.70 ERA) battling the SeaWolves lefty Adam Wilk (2-0, 0.56 ERA).

Captains Lose 5-3, Swept by Loons

The Loons J.T. Wise with a runner on first hit his second two-run homerun of the game to beat the Captains 5-3. Great Lakes swept Lake County with the win on Friday night.

Lake County showed some grit in the fifth inning. Dwight Childs dropped a fly ball into a right field for a leadoff single. Delvi Cid chopped one up the middle to put two on. Argenis Martinez laid down a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third. Adam Abraham ripped a double down the leftfield line to score both runners and tie the game at three.

The Loons’ Je-Mo Lee (1-0) picked up the win working two scoreless innings in relief giving up a hit and striking out one. Steve Ames worked the final two frames striking out five for his 15th save of the year. Owen Dew (1-2) took the loss giving up two runs on four hits over three innings with three strike outs. Great Lakes’ starter Wilborn went five innings and struck out ten Captains, the Loons combined to strike out 16 Captain hitters.

Lake County returns home to Classic Park for the final series of the regular season and will host Lansing at 7:00PM. The Captains will start RHP Jason Knapp (1-0) against the RHP Matt Fields (5-7) for the Lugnuts.

Scrappers drop game one to Jammers, 6-3

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth with two on and two out, but Diego Seastrunk flew out to give the Jamestwon Jammers a 6-3 game one win Friday night at Eastwood Field.

The Jammers got three runs off Scrappers starter Cole Cook in the top of the first inning and never trailed improving their record to 41-32 and remaining a half game back of the Williamsport Crosscutters in the New York-Penn League Wild Card Standings. The Scrappers fell to 30-44 in 2010.

Cook suffered the loss allowing four runs on five hits in four innings of work striking out five.

Kenneth Toves got the win for the Jammers pitching 1.2 scoreless innings of relief. Jordan Conley got Seastrunk to fly out to end the game recording the save for Jamestown.

The game remained 4-2 until the top of the eighth inning when J.D. Goryl allowed two runs to score giving the Jammers a 6-2 lead.

Down by four, the Scrappers rallied in the bottom of the ninth inning off reliever Brandon Cunnif as Nick Bartolone and Tyler Cannon both singled with one out putting runners on first and second base. Following a Giovanny Urshela strike out, Jesus Aguilar singled home Bartolone to cut the deficit to 6-3. The Jammers turned to Conley with the tying run up and he got Seastrunk to fly out to the center field to end the game.

The Scrappers will look to even the series with the Jammers in game two Saturday night. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
