Captains Beat Loons 7-6, Force Game Three
The Captains jumped out to a 6-0 lead early on Monday night and hung on for a 7-6 win. With the crucial win, Lake County evened the best of the three series with Great Lakes at one game a piece.
Jason Smit went 0-for-4 in the game but still managed to drive in two runs for the Captains. Smit hit into a fielder’s choice in the third inning with the bases loaded driving in one. A throwing error by Rafael Ynoa allowed another run to score and the Captains went on to score four times in the third inning for a 6-0 lead.
The Loons rallied back and kept the pressure on the Captains making it 7-6 after the fifth inning. Ted Kubiak handed the ball to Preston Guilmet who pitched 2.1 scoreless innings striking out five for his third save of the postseason to seal the deal for Lake County.
Francisco Jimenez (2-0) earned the win in relief tossing 2.2 innings, giving up a hit, walking two and striking out two. Allen Webster (0-2) took his second loss the playoffs tossing 2.2 innings allowing six runs, four of them earned, striking out two.
Lake County and Great Lakes will play Tuesday night at 7:05PM in game three of the best of three series at Dow Diamond. The Captains hand the ball to LHP Vidal Nuno (0-1) against the Loons LHP Greg Wilborn (0-0). The winner will earn a date in the best of five Midwest League Championsip series.
