Playoff baseball returned to Columbus Wednesday night and the affair ended with a bang as Luke Carlin blasted a game-winning 2-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Clippers a 6-4 win and a 1-0 series advantage over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees in the first ever post-season game in the brief history of Huntington Park.
The Clippers started the scoring in the 1st inning when Ezequiel Carrera drilled his 2nd home run in the last two games for a 1-0 Clippers lead. The Yankees scored a pair in the top of the 3rd inning and the Clippers answered with a run in the bottom to even the score at 2-2.
After single-run innings in the 4th and 6th, Columbus took a 4-3 lead into the 9th inning when Jorge Vasquez drilled a solo home run to tie the game and send it into extra innings.
In the bottom of the 10th, Jerad Head led off a single, his 3rd hit of the ballgame and Luke Carlin came to the plate with orders to bunt. After fouling off a pair of bunt attempts, Carlin drove an 0-2 Amauri Sanit offering off of the scoreboard, lifting the Clippers to victory.
David Huff pitched the first 7 innings, but did not get a decision, Josh Judy pitched a scoreless 8th inning before Vinnie Pestano allowed the home run in the 9th. Zach Putnam earned the win for Columbus with a perfect 10th inning.
The Clippers and Yankees will meet in the second game of the series Thursday at 6:35pm. Former Yankees right-hander Zach McAllister pitches for Columbus, while righty David Phelps gets the nod for Scranton Wilkes-Barre.
Kinston falls 3-2 in game one of division series
Jason Bour’s go-ahead RBI single in the sixth inning carried Winston-Salem to a 3-2 win over Kinston in game one of the Southern Division Championship Series on Wednesday night in Winston. The Dash has a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series.
Kinston got on the board in the first inning against Winston-Salem starter Terry Doyle. Bo Greenwell led off the game with a ground-rule double down the right field line. Karexon Sanchez hit a sacrifice bunt to move Greenwell to third. After a walk to Jeremie Tice, Chun Chen hit an RBI double to left to give the K-Tribe a 1-0 lead.
The Dash answered in the bottom of the inning against Kinston starter T.J McFarland. Jose Martinez reached on an error by Indians shortstop Juan Diaz. Jon Gilmore then doubled to right to put runners on second and third. Seth Loman hit an RBI groundout to tie the game at one and Ozzie Lewis hit an RBI single to put Winston on top 2-1.
The K-Tribe tied the game in the sixth. Abner Abreu led off with an infield single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Juan Diaz. With two out, Donnie Webb hit an RBI single to right to score Abreu and tie the score at two. Winston came right back in the bottom of the inning, taking a 3-2 lead on an RBI single by Jason Bour. Bour was thrown out by Webb trying to stretch the hit into a double. Kinston’s defense was on display again later in the inning when Abreu threw out Drew Garcia at home to end the inning after Greg Paiml’s single to right.
Kinston had an opportunity in the eighth after a two-out single by Doug Pickens and a double by Donnie Webb. Bo Greenwell struck out to end the threat. Dash closer Tyson Corley retired the Indians in order in the ninth for the save.
McFarland (0-1) exited the game after 5 1/3 innings. He surrendered three runs (one earned) on six hits and struck out six in the loss. Travis Turek pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief for the K-Tribe. He gave up four hits and struck out one.
Doyle allowed two runs on eight hits in 5 2/3, walked three and struck out two. Reliever Hector Santiago (1-0) came on in relief and threw 2 1/3 scoreless frames for the win.
Kinston’s Austin Adams (6-1, 1.53) will take on Winston-Salem’s Dylan Axelrod (8-3, 1.99) for game two of the best of five series Thursday night at 7pm.
Holt of Lightning Lifts Captains to 4-2 Win in Playoff Opener
With the game tied at two in the seventh inning the Captains had Argenis Martinez at third and Delvi Cid at second base. Tyler Holt ripped a base hit to left centerfield scoring Martinez and Cid and the Captains to push the Captains to a 4-2 lead which stood up in the end as the final score. Lake County’s win on Wednesday night over West Michigan gives them a 1-0 lead in the best of three series.
Adam Abraham hit a solo homerun to deep leftfield in the top of the third inning putting the Captains out in front 1-0.
Captains’ starter Brett Brach retired the first nine hitters he faced till the bottom of the fourth inning when Jamie Johnson walked on a full count. Corey Jones doubled down the leftfield line putting runners on second and third for West Michigan. Brach hit Wade Gaynor with a pitch loading the bases. Tony Plagman tied the game at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly to left scoring Johnson.
In the sixth inning the White Caps forced Brach out of the game. Corey Jones hit a weak ground ball that deflected off Brach for an infield base hit. Gaynor hit a lazy line drive to short Frawley’s leaping effort came up short for a base hit. Francisco Jimenez entered the game and gave up a single to Tony Plagman to load the bases. Jimenez hit Clay Jones in the foot with a pitch to score Corey Jones to give West Michigan a 2-1 lead.
Jason Smit led the seventh inning off getting hit by Victor Larez pitch. Greg Folgia laid down a sacrifice bunt to push Smit in scoring position. Martinez singled to right putting runners on the corners. Cid delivered a huge base hit to leftfield to score Smit and tie the game 2-2. Martinez and Cid picked stole second and third on a double steal for Holt.
Francisco Jimenez (1-0) earned the win in relief working and inning and two thirds giving up just two hits. Brach with a no-decision tossed five innings allowing two runs on five hits, walking one and striking out three. Jose Flores came up huge striking out all four hitters he faced in the seventh and eighth. Preston Guilmet picked up the save pitching a perfect ninth, striking out one.
Victor Larez (0-1) suffered the loss giving up all four runs on nine hits over 6.2 innings, walking one and striking out four.
Lake County and West Michigan resume the best of the three series Thursday night at 6:30PM at Classic Park. The Captains will start LHP Vidal Nuno (6-8, 4.96) in game two against a RHP Trevor Feeney (12-13, 3.46) for the WhiteCaps.
