Around the Farm: May 11

Around the Farm takes a quick look at some of yesterday's performances by Indians prospects throughout the system. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday's game.

Jason Kipnis - 2B, Columbus: 2-4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI, K.
After a somewhat slow start to the season, Kipnis has been steadily re-adjusting and swinging a hot bat. In his past ten games, he's hitting .286, with three doubles, a triple, and a home run, while driving in eleven. I don't expect to see Kipnis in Cleveland this season, largely due to the fact his glove still has work to be done.
  • Cord Phelps - SS, Columbus: 2-4, R, HR, 3 RBI. Free this guy from AAA already. You've slowly seen the decline of Orlando Cabrera and I've been calling for Adam Everett to be cut or moved by mid-season. Phelps has all but earned a promotion to this point.
  • Ezequiel Carrera - CF, Columbus: 2-5, 2 R, 2 K. Another potential steal for the Tribe given to them by the Mariners.
  • Wes Hodges - 1B, Columbus: 2-4, 2 R, RBI, K. Hodges days may become numbered in the organization and the writing is beginning to show on the wall, especially with Nick Johnson coming around the corner.
  • Jeanmar Gomez - SP, Columbus: 5.2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER/R, 3 BB, 7 K. Another unimpressive start by Gomez, who has really come down to Earth this season and is slowly becoming an unreliable option, at least, in my opinion.
  • Zach Putnam - RP, Columbus: IP, 2 H. If the Indians don't look outside the organization for relief help, Putnam may be on the top of their list to promote.
  • Matt McBride - DH, Akron: 1-3, R, HR, RBI, BB, K. Has hit five home runs in the past eight games and is hitting .317/.349/.707 in his last ten games.
  • John Drennan - RF, Akron: 2-4, 2B, 3B, K. I'll be interested to see if and when Drennan does get promoted how he performs at the next level.
  • Kelvin De La Cruz - SP, Akron: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 ER/R, 4 BB, 7 K. As Tony has tweeted, it's amazing how wildly effective De La Cruz has been. His walks continue to be a concern, but somehow he manages to get out of a lot of trouble. He picked up his second win on the season, moving his record to 2-3.
  • Cory Burns - CP, Akron: 2 IP, 2 K. Now this is the Cory Burns we've come accustomed to and love. He picked up his tenth save on the season.
  • T.J. House - SP, Kinston: 5.2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER/6 R, 4 BB, 2 K. House's struggles continue and it's amazing to see how quick he's unraveled.
  • Kinston Hitting: Managed five hits combined in their double header, not scoring a run in either game. They're desperately searching for a spark to their offense.
  • LeVon Washington - CF, Lake County: 0-4, 3 K. After getting out of the gate running (literally), Washington has struggled at the plate adjusting to professional pitching.

Gomez's pitching line last night is a little bit midleading. He left the game with 2 outs in the 6th inning, bases loaded and leading 6-0.

Herrmann came in to relieve and immediately gave up a grand slam.

So, yes, Gomez was responsible for 3 runs in 5.2 innings. But, Herrmann certainly contributed to Gomez's bottom line.

The offense at Kinston is just dreadful. It seems like that team is the minor league equivalent of the Mariners.
