Michael Goodnight, SP, Lake County: 6.0, H, 1 R/ER, 2 BB, 10 K, W (2-2):
How about that for a stat line for Mr. Goodnight. For those not familiar with the name, Goodnight was chosen in the 13th round of the 2010 draft, and is turning out to be another stellar one at that. While Goodnight can struggle a bit with consistency replicating his delivery, when he's on, he has three plus pitches. His fastball is developing into a mid-90's weapon, and his slider and curveball are both out pitches. He hasn't yet had a bad outing, but this is his first true dominating performance. You get the impression that Goodnight may be a comer, and this could very well vault him as his confidence develops.
Zach McAllister-SP, Columbus: 8 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 5 K, W (5-0):
The Indians acquired McAllister from the Yankees last year for Austin Kearns. Since Kearns is back, I'd say we won on this deal, wouldn't you? McAllister isn't going to burn you with his fastball, as it settles in at the low-90's, but his fastball sinks, and he can alter speeds which creates fits for hitters. His fastball can top off in the mid-90's, but he only goes there for a change of pace. He has a solid slider, change and curve. He uses that sinking fastball and slider in a typical "Tribe starter" fashion, to create ground-ball outs. He struggled last season, but is turning out to be a major steal for the Tribe. Can anyone say depth?
- Jason Kipnis-2B, Columbus: 2-for-4, R, 2B, 3 RBI, 2 K: Kipnis has found his groove, and is currently in a five game hit streak, with multiple hits in three of the five games.
- Cord Phelps-SS, Columbus: 1-for-3, 2 R, 1 2B, 2 BB: Phelps started off the season on fire, but has tailed off a bit. This is his first hit in four games. Perhaps he was upset he wasn't a part of the 18-run massacre last night.
- Lonnie Chisenhall-3B, Columbus: 1-for-3, 2 R, 2 BB: Chisenhall continues his resurgence with another nice performance, getting on base three times tonight.
- Chad Huffman-DH, Columbus: 1-for-4, R, 2 RBI, BB, 2 K: Huffman does nothing but produce. He's got to be a bit antsy to find a team that will get him on a big league roster.
- Wes Hodges-1B, Columbus: 1-for-4, R, 2B, K: I hope Hodges becomes more productive, but .163 isn't enough for this former sleeper prospect.
- Carlton Smith-RP, Columbus: 1 IP, H, 3 K: YAWN, another inning without giving a run, and only three K's. Oh yeah, his ERA remains at 0.00 in 11 2/3 IP.
- Carlos Moncrief-CF, Lake County: 2-for-4, 2B: Back-to-back two-hit games, 3 of the past four, and a four game hit streak.
- Tyler Cannon-LF, Lake County: 2-for-4, 2B, RBI: Cannon is advanced for Lake County at 23-years old (12th rounder in 2010), and he's proving it. He's batting .368 on the season, but the most impressive facet of his game is that he's played multiple games at second, third, short and left. He's also played first and DH'ed. The offensively challenged Kinston Indians may be his next stop within the next couple of weeks.
- Alex Lavisky-C, Lake County: 1-for-2, R, 2B, BB, K: Baby steps for Lavisky, who had a good night. It hasn't been the norm, but this local product is young, so don't be surprised to see some streakiness before he starts figuring things out.
- Anthony Gallas-RF, Lake County: 2-for-4, 2B, SB (1): Gallas is hitting .321, and shows no signs of slowing down, batting .314 in his last 10.
- Dale Dickerson-RP, Lake County: 2 IP, BB, H (1): the sidearmer got beat up a bit in the middle of April, but in his last three appearances, and four innings, he's only given up one hit and two walks.
- Clayton Ehlert-Closer, Lake County: 1 IP, K, S (7): Ehlert took the loss last night, but comes right back with a perfect save tonight. His ERA is 0.87.
