Kinston tied a season high with their fourth straight victory, a 2-1 win over Frederick on Friday night in Maryland. All four wins have been by one run in Kinston’s latest streak.
Kinston starting pitcher Giovanni Soto gave up a lead-off home run to Frederick’s Bobby Stevens in the bottom of the first inning. Soto would settle down from there, however, allowing just three singles over his next five innings of work. Soto (3-3, 2.02) would keep the lead, after striking out Tyler Townsend with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning. Soto gave up one run on four hits, walking run and striking out eight.
Keys starter Oliver Drake faced the minimum through three innings, then the K-Tribe’s bats woke up in the fourth. The top of the inning started off with a walk by Tyler Holt. It extended Holt’s consecutive on-base streak to 20 games. Casey Frawley followed with a single. Bo Greenwell put down his team leading fifth sacrifice bunt to advance both runners. Adam Abraham then turned on a 3-0 pitch, belting it to the wall and driving in both Holt and Frawley. The smash gave Kinston a 2-1 lead. Drake (2-2) was very good in the loss, giving up two runs on five hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Kinston’s bullpen dodged some bullets in the late innings. Travis Turek gave up a lead-off double in the bottom of the seventh to Brian Ward. After Ward advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt, Turek struck out Jacob Julius. Turek then got a ground-out to get out of the inning with the lead. Adam Miller worked around two errors in the eighth inning, inducing a double play to leave the frame with the 2-1 lead intact. Turek picked up a hold, Miller got the save as the two pitchers combined for three innings of one-hit ball.
The roadtrip continues Saturday night at 6 pm in Frederick. Brett Brach gets the start for Kinston.
McAllister pitches Clippers to split
Zach McAllister became the first pitcher in the International League to reach seven victories after firing seven scoreless innings in a 3-0 win over Pawtucket.
Josh Rodriguez provided the first Columbus run on a solo homer off Red Sox starter Miguel Gonzalez.
The Clippers added two more runs on a dropped fly ball by Pawtucket second baseman Tony Taylor.
Pawtucket won the opening game, the completion of a supsnded contest from Thursday, 5-2 after trailing 2-1 when play resumed.
Jensen Lewis suffered the loss for the Clippers.
Columbus opens a four-game series with Durham on Saturday at 7:05pm. Corey Kluber faces Chris Bootcheck in a battle of right-handers.
Aeros Fall To Curve, 2-0
The Akron Aeros dropped game one of a four-game series to the Altoona Curve 2-0 Friday at Blair County Ballpark.
Despite pitching well, Austin Adams suffered the loss, going six innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on nine hits and striking out seven while walking none.
Mike Colla got the win for Altoona tossing six scoreless innings, scattering three hits, walking two and striking out four. Noah Krol pitched a scoreless top of the ninth inning to earn the save.
Tim Fedroff went 1-2 with two walks to extend his hitting streak to 13 games, which is a 2011 team-high.
The Curve (20-19) got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Qunicy Latimore singled and scored on a Jordy Mercer RBI double to make it 1-0.
Altoona took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when Jordan Henry misplayed a ball in center field allowing Brock Holt to score.
The Aeros (20-21) and Curve will play a doubleheader Saturday. Both games will be seven-inning contests. Left-handed pitcher T.J. McFarland will get the start for the Aeros in game one. McFarland is 1-1 with a 5.64 ERA this season. He will face right-hander Aaron Pribanic, who is 3-1 with a 2.48 ERA in 2011. The Aeros will give the ball to right-handed pitcher Paolo Espino in game two. Espino is 0-0 with a 2.67 ERA this season. He will face fellow righty Bryan Morris, who is 1-1 with a 4.11 ERA on the year. First pitch is at 5 p.m. with a 30-miunte intermission between games.
Captains Mount Comeback to Slay Dragons
The Lake County Captains overcame a three run deficit after five innings to gain a 9-5 come from behind victory over the Dayton Dragons on Friday night. This was only the second time this season that the Dragons have lost after leading through five innings (17-2).
The Dragons put up a run in the bottom of the first inning when Captains starter Cole Cook walked Billy Hamilton who proceeded to steal second base. A fly out moved Hamilton to third and then Dominic D’Anna delivered a single that scored Hamilton and the Dragons lead 1-0. Hamilton lead of the top of the third inning with a single and moved to third on a double by Jefry Sierra. D’Anna grounded out allowing Hamilton to score and it was 2-0. Donald Lutz led off the bottom of the fourth inning with his eighth home run of the year to make it 3-0.
The Captains tied it up at 3-3 in the top of the sixth inning when Nick Bartolone singled and went to third base on a single by Carlos Moncrief. Bartolone scored when Argenis Martinez reached on an error moving Moncrief to second base. Two batters later, Jesus Aguilar doubled home Moncrief and Alex Monsalve followed with a single to score Giovanny Urshela.
Dragons got the lead back in the bottom of the sixth inning off of reliever J.D. Reichenbach when D’Anna knocked in another run with a single and David Vidal followed with a RBI single as well and it was 5-3. The Captains took the lead in the top of the seventh inning when Martinez plated a run on a ground out and Urshela singled home the tying run. The go ahead run scored when Monsalve reached on an error and then Dwight Childs walked with the bases loaded and the Captains led 7-5.
Cook took a no decision working five innings allowing three runs on eight hits, walking three and striking out two. Reichenbach (3-1) came on in the sixth inning and worked three innings to pick up the win. He allowed two unearned runs on three hits while striking out three. Nick Sarianides worked a scoreless ninth inning striking out two.
Dragons starter Daniel Renken did not get a decision either pitching six innings allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits while striking out six. Pat Doyle (2-1) took the loss lasting on .2 of an inning allowing four runs, two earned on two hits, walking two and striking out one.
The Captains and Dragons play game two of their four game series on Saturday at 7:07 PM with the Captains sending RHP Mike Goodnight (3-3 2.93) to the mound to face RHP Josh Smith (3-3, 1.91).
