Around the Farm will be producing it's first official "Kinston Edition" tonight, as the tumbling Ohio rains wiped out Columbus, Akron and Lake County. While North Carolina dealt with our own fair share of thunderstorms and downpours, they somehow managed to avoid Kinston long enough for the K-Tribe to get a game in.
Tyler Holt, DH, Kinston: 2-3, 1 R, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K:
Tyler "Havoc" may turn out to be the steal of the 2010 draft for the Cleveland Indians. While it's certainly far too early to make that kind of call, Holt is doing everything he possibly can to open the eyes of Tribe management, if they were ever closed to begin with. Holt is currently on a nine-game hit streak, and has been on base in 16 straight games, dating back to April 28th. During the hit streak, Holt has gone 14-31 for an impressive .419 average. He's got three runs, three doubles, two RBI, seven walks, and only five K's. Don't let the run scoring fool you. At Kinston, he's had absolutely nothing pushing him along. There seems to be a massive log jam in the outfield position in both Akron and Columbus, so it's likely that Holt will spend a majority of the season here in Kinston, but don't be surprised if he follows the same path as Jordan Henry in 2010, and make the move up some time in the summer. "Havoc" is that good folks. Just another prospect to get excited about.
- Justin Toole-SS, Kinston: 1-2, 1 2B, 3 RBI, SB (9): Toole is doing everything he can to make himself relevant in this system, and you have to give him some credit for that. This year, he's played every infield position, as well as left field. He's also stolen nine bases this year, which is four more than he's stolen in his entire career prior to 2011. He's also managed to hit some, batting .293 so far this season. In Kinston, that's like batting .400. Still, there seem to be better options than Toole for a super-utility role at both Akron and Columbus.
- Bo Greenwell-RF, Kinston: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 K: Greenwell is mired in a 6-33 slump in his last ten games, watching his average drop 25 points.
- Abner Abreu-CF, Kinston: 0-4, K: Okay, doing my best Randy Quaid from Major League 2 impression, Abner Abreu, "you make by butt sing...I think I loathe you." Like Greenwell, Abreu is 6-33. While it's distinctly possible for Abreu to salvage the season, it's painfully obvious that he's a long, long way away (10 K vs. 1 BB in his last ten...oiy).
- T.J. House-SP, Kinston: 6 IP, 8 H, 3 R/ER, 4 BB, 3 K, 1 HR, W (2-4): While this isn't going to be the start that House centers over his mantle when he makes the big league, he did get the win, his second of the season.
- Tyler Sturdevant-RP, Kinston: 1 2/3 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K, H (3): Sturdevant gave up all his runs in three of his first four games pitched in 2011. Since then, he's gone seven straight games absolutely dominating Carolina League hitters. He's pitched 13 innings total during the span, giving up nine hits and three walks, while striking out 12. You'd have to put him in line as one of the top Tribe relievers in 2011.
- Preston Guilmet-Closer, Kinston: 1 1/3 IP, 1 H, S (6): As good as Sturdevant has been this year, Guilmet has been that much better. He's yet to give up any runs all season. In 10 2/3 innings, he's given up all of four hits and struck out 12. Did you notice I didn't mention any walks? Yeah, not-a-one yet this season. He's not overpowering, with a low 89-90 MPH fastball, but he peppers the lower half of the strike zone with a nice slider and splitter. He really doesn't have a plus pitch, but he does have plus control.
