The Akron Aeros split a doubleheader with the Altoona Curve Saturday at Blair County Ballpark losing game one 2-0 and winning game two 8-1.
Aeros outfielder Tim Fedroff collected hits in each game of the doubleheader to extend his team-best hitting streak to 15 games.
The Curve (21-20 following the doubleheader) won game one behind a seven-inning complete game shutout from right-hander Aaron Pribanic.
Pribanic got the win scattering six hits and striking out one while walking none.
Southpaw T.J. McFarland was saddled with the loss for the Aeros lasting six innings, giving up two earned runs on six hits, walking two and striking out four.
Altoona scored a run in the bottom of the second inning on an Eric Fryer RBI single and a run in the third on a Starling Marte solo home run to left field.
Righty Paolo Espino tossed five quality innings to help Akron win game two of the doubleheader.
Espino got the win for the Aeros giving up one earned run on three hits and striking out six while walking none.
Right-hander Bryan Morris got the loss for Altoona lasting three innings, giving up one earned run on one hit, walking two and striking out three.
The Aeros (21-22 following the doubleheader) got a run in the in top of the fourth inning when Kyle Bellows walked with the bases loaded allowing Fedroff to score from third.
Akron added three runs in the top of the fifth inning to make it 4-0.
The Curve got a run in the bottom of the frame to cut the Aeros lead to 4-1.
Akron answered with four in the top of the seventh inning and split the doubleheader.
The Aeros and Curve will play the finale of a four-game series Sunday. Left-handed pitcher Matt Packer gets the start for the Aeros. Packer is 1-5 with a 4.50 ERA in 2011. He will be opposite fellow lefty Aaron Thompson, who is 2-4 with a 4.19 ERA this season. First pitch is at 2 p.m. The game can be heard on Fox Sports 1350 AM or online at sportsradio1350.com. Clippers win a wild one
In front of a huge crowd on the first fireworks night of the season, the Clippers provided some offensive fireworks as they held on for an 11-8 win over the Durham Bulls.Clippers right hander Corey Kluber (2-3)got the win and Chris Bootcheck (1-1) was saddled with the loss. Zach Putnam picked up his sixth save of the season.
The Clippers got on the board early with some two out magic. Back-to-back two out walks by Lonnie Chisenhall and Jered Head brought Chad Huffman to the plate. Huffman delivered with an RBI double scoring Chisenhall and giving Columbus an early 1-0 advantage.
The bats were broken out in a big way for the Clippers offense in the bottom of the fourth. Jerad Head walked to lead off the frame. The next batter, Chad Huffman, clubbed a home run that just got over the left center field wall to make it 3-0 Columbus. That was only the beginning of the Clippers offensive onslaught. With runners on first and second with two outs, Jason Kipnis slapped a triple down the right field line that scored Luis Valbuena and Josh Rodriguez that increased the Clippers lead to 5-0. Kipnis would later come in to score on a Cord Phelps RBI single to make it 6-0 in favor of Columbus. After a Lonnie Chisenhall single, Head, who was batting for the second time in the inning, hit a two-out two -run RBI double to make it 8-0. Luis Valbuena popped out to shortstop to end the inning, but the damage was done as the Clippers scored seven runs in the 4th and acquired a commanding 8-0 advantage.
The Bulls got a run in the top of the sixth inning when Felipe Lopez hit an RBI double to make it 8-1. The Bulls would load the bases with two out and would score another run on a bases loaded walk to Leslie Anderson to knock out Kluber and make it 8-2 Columbus. An infield RBI single by J.J. Furmaniak would make it 8-3 Clippers. The next batter, Ray Olmedo, coaxed a walk out of Clippers reliever Carlton Smith to make it 8-4 Clippers. Desmond Jennings who struck out to begin the inning, walked to make it a three-run Clippers advantage at 8-5. It looked like the Clippers would the end the inning on a groundout to second base, but Omar Luna was called safe at first despite the fact it looked like Wes Hodges kept his foot on the 1st base bag while taken a less than stellar throw from Kipnis. Furmaniak came into score, making it 8-6. Luckily for the Clippers, Smith got Felipe Lopez to ground out to second to end the inning.
With the game suddenly very close, the Clippers went back to bat rack hoping to get the momentum back in their favor. After a one out single by Jered Head, Chad Huffman hit a triple that was two feet from going over the centerfield wall to drive in Head and make it 9-6. It appeared that the inning was over when Wes Hodges grounded out to shortstop, but the call was overturned by the home plate umpire after it was apparent that Bulls first baseman Russ Canzler did not have his foot on the bag when he caught the throw. An error was charged to Canzler and that allowed Huffman to score and make it 10-6 Clippers.
The Clippers bullpen had a rough eighth inning. Ray Olmedo came through with an RBI single, making it 10-7. With runners on second and third and 1 out, Omar Luna hit an RBI groundout to make it 10-8. Felipe Lopez struck out swinging to end the inning, but it was back to a two-run lead for Columbus. In the bottom half of the eighth, Chisenhall led the inning off with a triple that just missed going over the right center field wall. After a Jered Head groundout to shortstop, Huffman hit an RBI flyout that scored Chisenhall and make it 11-8.
Zach Putnam shut the door in the ninth and the Clippers got a victory for a capacity crowd of 11,845, the eight largest crowd in the history of Huntington Park.
On Sunday, Joe Martinez will get the start for Columbus. He will face Edgar Martinez who will start for Durham. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM.
Kinston's Win Streak Ends at Four!
Frederick's Tyler Kolodny hit a home run in the bottom of the ninth inning as Frederick walked off with a 3-1 victory Saturday night in Maryland. The shot ended Kinston's four game win streak. The dramatic ending overshadowed a great pitching night for both starters.
Casey Frawley hit his third home run of the season in the top of the first inning, as the solo shot gave Kinston a 1-0 lead. Frederick starting pitcher Bobby Bundy would recover in a big way, retiring the next fifteen K-Tribe batters. Bundy went eight innings, giving up just three hits. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter.
Kinston starting pitcher Brett Brach had a perfect game going into the fourth inning, as he retired the first ten Frederick Keys he faced. After giving up a walk and a single with one-out in the fourth inning, Brach retired the next seven batters he faced. Brach allowed just one more base runner through his final three innings of work. The New Jersey native went seven innings, giving up one hit while striking out three.
Frederick would ruin Brach's pitching gem in the eighth inning. With K-Tribe reliever Tyler Sturdevant on the hill, Frederick's Brian Ward delivered a one-out double. After a strike out, Bobby Stevens dropped in a soft single to left to score Ward and tie things at one run a piece. In the bottom of the ninth inning, L.J. Hoes led off with a double. After a Bo Greenwell diving catch robbed Tyler Townsend of a hit, Kolodny hit the walk off smash. Sturdevant (2-2) took the loss; he had come into the outing with a 0.83 ERA. Sean Gleason (1-0) got the win from the Keys bullpen. Kinston managed four hits on the night, as the Keys had only five.
The road series ends in Frederick Sunday at 2pm. T.J. House gets the start for Kinston (18-23). Kinston returns home to Grainger Stadium for a holiday homestand May 26th through June 2nd.
Walk Off Homer Beats Captains
Dominic D'Anna hit a two run walk off home run in the bottom of the eleventh inning to lead the Dayton Dragons to a 4-2 extra inning victory over the Lake County Captains on Saturday night. The Captains are now 0-4 in extra innings this season.
The Dragons opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning when Theo Bowe reached on an infield single. He would steal second and then score when David Vidal singled and the Dragons led 1-0. The Captains took the lead in the top of the eighth inning when Ronny Rodriguez reached base when he struck out and the pitch went to the backstop. Nick Bartolone followed with a triple to score Rodriguez. Carlos Moncrief lifted a sacrifice fly that scored Bartolone and the Captains led 2-1. The Dragons tied it up at 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning when Devin Lohman singled home Billy Hamilton.
Captains starter Mike Goodnight got a no decision working a career high seven innings allowing one run on two hits, walking two and striking out seven. Dale Dickerson pitched three innings and allowed an unearned run on four hits while striking out two. Nick Sarianides (2-2) allowed the two runs in the eleventh inning to take the loss.
Dragons starter Josh Smith also got a no decision pitching a season high 7.1 innings allowing two runs on four hits, walking one while striking out a season high thirteen batters. Daniel Wolford (2-0) pitched a scoreless eleventh inning to get the win.
The Captains and Dragons play game three of their four game series on Sunday at 2:00 PM with the Captains sending LHP Mike Rayl (4-0 2.29) to the hill to oppose RHP Chad Rogers (0-1, 2.77). The game can be heard on ESPN 970 WFUN and on the internet at captainsbaseball.com.
