The Columbus Clippers finished off a four game sweep of the Durham Bulls on Tuesday winning an early morning matchup 5-3. Lefty Scott Barnes earned the win going five innings and allowed two runs on five hits, three walks, and seven strikeouts.
Second baseman Jason Kipnis was the star offensively for the Clippers going 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, homer and two RBI. Third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall chipped in going 2-for-4 with a double and RBI, and outfielder Jerad Head went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI as well.
Left-hander Nick Hagadone continues to impress this year and earned the save pitching the final 2.1 shutout innings and allowed one hit, no walks, and had two strikeouts.
Columbus is off on Wednesday and will head to Norfolk on Thursday where right-hander Zach McAllister is the scheduled starter.
Gardner roughed up as Aeros fall to Senators
The Akron Aeros lost game two of a four-game series to the Harrisburg Senators 11-6 Tuesday at Canal Park.
Right-handed pitcher Joe Gardner suffered the loss for the Aeros pitching 4.1 innings, giving up nine runs (six earned) on nine hits, walking two and striking out three.
Left-hander Matt Chico came in from the bullpen and earned the win for Harrisburg lasting 1.1 innings, giving up three earned runs on three hits, walking two and striking out two. Erik Arnesen pitched three scoreless innings of relief to earn the save.
Tim Fedroff went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI to extend his hitting streak to 18 games, which is the longest in the Eastern League this season.
The Senators (21-20) began their scoring in the top of the first inning. Steve Lombardozzi led off with a triple and Josh Johnson singled him home to make it 1-0. With two outs and one on, Derek Norris hit a two-run home run to give Harrisburg a 3-0 lead. Bill Rhinehart capped the frame with an RBI double.
Harrisburg added to their lead in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Stephen King singled and Jonathan Tucker reached on a Juan Diaz error. Lombardozzi followed with a single scoring King and advancing Tucker to third. Josh Johnson singled home Tucker to give the Senators a 6-0 lead. Lombardozzi scored on an Alex Valdez ground out to make it 7-0.
The Senators scored two more in the top of the fifth inning to take a 9-0 lead.
The Aeros (22-24) answered with three in the bottom of the frame. Karexon Sanchez led off with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Following a strikeout, Sanchez scored on a Jordan Henry groundout to make it 9-1. Fedroff followed with a walk and scored when Archie Gilbert misplayed a ball in left field. Later in the frame, Matt McBride singled home a run to cut the deficit to 9-3.
Akron added three more in the bottom of the sixth inning on a Henry RBI double and a Fedroff two-RBI double to close the gap to 9-6.
Harrisburg added runs in the top of the eighth and ninth innings and went on to the win.
The Aeros and Senators will continue their series Wednesday night. Akron will give the ball to right-hander Austin Adams, who is 4-3 with a 2.45 ERA this season. He will face southpaw Oliver Perez, who is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 2011.
Kinston wins third straight
Kinston secured their third consecutive series win with a 4-3 victory Tuesday night in Woodbridge, Virginia. The Indians have now won seven of their last eight games. This is the first time the K-Tribe has put together three straight series wins this season. Kinston is now just four games out of first place in the Carolina League Southern Division.
Potomac’s Steven Souza started the scoring with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the second inning. Kinston’s starting pitcher Clayton Cook would then settle in, giving up just two more hits the rest of the way. Cook (4-3) picked up the win, giving up just the one run while striking out three.
Kinston tied the score thanks to a Potomac error in the top of the third inning. Tyler Holt started the rally with a two-out single. Holt has now reached safely in 24 consecutive games, the most in the Carolina League this season. Frawley followed with a single of his own, advancing Holt to third base. Bo Greenwell then hit a routine grounder to shortstop Jose Lozada that was booted, allowing Holt to tie the score at one. Nationals starter Danny Rosenbaum would settle down as well, holding Kinston scoreless until the top of the seventh inning.
In the seventh inning, Adam Abraham led off with a double. Justin Toole followed with a sacrifice bunt that was fielded by the Rosenbaum, but thrown wide of first for a costly error. Kinston would capitalize when Roberto Perez followed with an RBI single, giving Kinston a 2-1 lead. With Tool at third base, a bad pick-off attempt at first allowed the Iowa native to score. Potomac’s first baseman Steven Sousa was charged with the second error of the inning. After a sacrifice from Delvi Cid, Perez advanced to third base. Perez would then score on a ground out from Holt, giving Kinston a 4-1 lead. Two of the runs would be unearned in the inning, proving to be the difference. Potomac scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings, but could get no closer. Rosenbaum (2-2) would be the tough luck loser, giving up six hits and one earned run (four unearned).
Kinston’s bullpen would hold on, as Travis Turek picked up his second hold of the season. Tyler Sturdevant struck out the side in the ninth inning for his first save of the year.
The two teams will meet up for the final game of the three game series Wednesday night in Woodbridge, Virginia. Giovanni Soto will get the start for Kinston.
