Luis Valbuena, SS, Columbus: 2-3, 3 R, 2B, RBI, BB:
Valbuena has been mired in a 5-33 slump over his past nine ballgames, so it was good to see the former Indians' starter bounce out of it with a good game batting ninth. Valbuena needs to continue to hit the ball to become relevant again to the Indians, as there seem to be better defensive and offensive options either in Columbus, or below.
Corey Kluber, SP, Columbus: 7 IP, 2 R/ER, 2 BB, 3 K, W (1):
Corey Kluber bounced back big time today, going seven innings for the first time, and getting his first win. It was much needed. In Kluber's seven starts, three of them have seen the big righty give up six or more runs. If you're starting in a rotation that includes Zach McCallister (6-0, 2.80 ERA), David Huff (former major league starter)and Jeanmar Gomez (3-0, starts with the big league club) in Columbus, and could include Kelvin De La Cruz, Austin Adams, Joe Gardner, Matt Packer and T.J. McFarland in Akron, that's just not good enough. Let's hope this is the beginning of better numbers.
- Ezequiel Carrera-CF, Columbus: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 RBI: Carrera is currently on a three game hitting streak, and is batting over .300 in his past ten games. He likely won't find himself with the Indians this season, but should be on the radar next season.
- Cord Phelps-2B, Columbus: 2-4, 2 RBI: Phelps continues to make himself extremely relevant, hittting .342 in his last ten games, and playing most of the infield positions. It's only a matter of time before Adam Everett and/or Jack Hannahan becomes expendable.
- Carlton Smith-RP, Columbus: 1 IP: Smith gets no respect. Everyone waited for the reliever to blow up after starting the season with 9 2/3 innings without giving up an earned run. Sure enough, Smith imploded for two games, but is back to his no-run ways.
- Josh Judy-Closer, Columbus: 1 IP, 1 BB, S (6): Judy has been a bit up-and-down for Columbus this season, but gets his sixth save and second solid outing in a row.
- Tyler Holt-CF, Kinston: 1-4: Holt is currently on an eight-game hitting streak, and has gotten on base in fifteen straight. He's about the only bright spot in the K-Tribe's offense.
- Tyler Cannon-2B, Kinston: 0-3: Cannon was hitting .366 for Lake County. He's currently hitting .250 for the K-Tribe. Perhaps there's some sort of K-Tribe curse.
- Jason Smit-LF, Kinston: Smit hit .344 for Lake County. He's currently hitting .211 for Kinston. See above about the K-Tribe curse. Perhaps they are touching Abner Abreu's bats by accident.
- Brett Brach-SP-Kinston: 4 2/3 IP, 6 H, 8 R, 3 BB, 3 K, L (3-3): Brach had the Carolina League's lowest ERA heading into tonight. Not anymore. This is Brach's only bad start between Akron and Kinston.
- Travis Turek-RP-Kinston: 1 1/3 IP, 4 H, 2 R/ER, 2 BB, 2 K, HR: Turek has been more good then bad this season. These were his first earned runs in four games.
- Adam Miller-RP-Kinston: 2 IP, 3 K: "Atom" is back. Since getting lit up in his first appearance with the organization since 2008, he has been near perfect. Miller has made four appearances for six innings (each of his last two appearances were for two innings each). In those games, he's given up two hits, three walks and struck out nine. If the Indians handle him the right way, our former all-organizational pitcher may just make some noise yet.
