On Monday the Indians announced that they have optioned right-handed pitcher Jeanmar Gomez to Triple-A Columbus. No immediate move was made to replace him on the active 25-man roster. The Indians will need a starter by Saturday to plug in the rotation and that will likely be right-hander Carlos Carrasco who should be ready to come off the disabled list then. In the meantime, it is possible the Indians fill the vacant roster spot with an extra bullpen arm or position player from Columbus, someone like Luis Valbuena, Jason Donald, Cord Phelps, Chad Huffman or Frank Herrmann.
Also, the Midwest League announced on Monday that Low-A Lake County outfielder Anthony Gallas and left-hander Mike Rayl were named the Midwest League Player of the Week and Midwest League Pitcher of the Week. In 26 games Gallas is hitting .343/.396/.569 with 14 2B, 3 HR, 12 RBI and a 8-17 walk to strikeout ratio. In six starts Rayl is 3-0 with a 2.08 ERA, and in 30.1 innings has allowed 17 hits, 9 walks, and has 31 strikeouts. Congrats to both players.
