Spring Game Recap: 3/31

Here are the box scores from Wednesday's minor league action against the Brewers. As an aside, no decision has been made on who the winner is between David Huff and Carlos Carrasco for the final spot in the big league rotation, but manager Manny Acta is supposed to address the media late Thursday morning with his decision. It is very much expected that Huff will be the guy who wins the spot.

Here are some quick thoughts on the minor league action on Wednesday:

- No cuts were handed down on Wednesday, but I am hearing that some cuts could be handed out on Thursday morning. This could be the final round of cuts, as the moving trucks will be there all day packing up the team and player gear to send to Lake County, Kinston, Akron and Columbus. Player should also hear their roster fate in regard to which team they did or did not make by Thursday evening or Friday morning.

- Columbus racked up 17 hits, led by 3B Jared Goedert who went 4-for-4 with a 3B, HR, and 5 RBI. Goedert has had a very good camp, so it will be interesting to see what he roster fate ultimately turns out to be. LF Stephen Head (3-for-4, RBI) and SS Brian Bixler (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) also had good games.

- RHP Hector Ambriz was put on the big league disabled list, but he is still pitching in minor league camp and struggling. He went 1 inning and allowed 3 runs on 2 hits, 1 walk, and had 1 strikeout.

- 1B Beau Mills went 2-for-4 with a 2B, HR, 2 RBI for Akron, but on the flip side SS Carlos Rivero went 0-for-4 with 3 strikeouts.

- LHP Scott Barnes (pictured) started for Akron and had a solid outing though his command was obviously shaky in that he threw 80 pitches but only lasting 4.2 innings allowing 1 run on 2 hits, 4 walks, and had 2 strikeouts. He threw just 7 first pitch strikes to the 19 batters he faced.

- RHP Omar Aguilar had another tough outing, this time lasting just 2/3s of an inning and allowing 4 runs on 4 hits, 2 walks and had 1 strikeout.

- Did I mention 2B Jason Kipnis has been hot? Well, he continues to sizzle this spring as once again he homered and finished the game 2-for-4 with a 2B, HR, and 3 RBI. I have not compiled the stats to date, but will provide final spring stats early next week, and I am guessing he far and away has had the best statistical camp. I believe that is now his 5th or 6th home run in 11 games.

- The other guy who has had a very good camp is 1B Chris Kersten, who went 2-for-4 with 2 2Bs andf 2 RBI on Wednesday. He continues to pound out the extra base hits, and while he will be old for the Midwest League playing for Lake County this year I am excited to get to know and follow him this year as a diamond in the rough kind of guy.

- RHP Danny Salazar had a nice outing going 5 innings and allowing 1 run on 4 hits, 1 walk and had 2 strikeouts. He is looking to lock down a rotation spot at Kinston or Lake County.
