Well, as far as debuts go, that was pretty special.
Thursday night in the season opener for the Columbus Clippers at their home ballpark, catcher Carlos Santana put on a memorable display in his Triple-A debut going 4-for-5 at the plate with 2 runs scored, a double, 2 home runs, and 4 RBI. It was also his 24th birthday, so he celebrated in style. He led a Clippers offensive onslaught where they pounded out 19 hits and beat up on Indianapolis by a final score of 17-4.
Other offensive stars of the night were left fielder Shelly Duncan who went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI, first baseman Wes Hodges who went 2-for-4 with a double, home run and 3 RBI, and right fielder Chris Gimenez also chipped in with a two-run home run.
Also, DH Russell Branyan appeared in the first game of his 20-game rehab assignment where in four plate appearances he went 3-for-3 with a walk, double and RBI before being lifted late in the game for a pinch runner. He was scheduled to only make four plate appearances.
The beneficiary of all the offense was right-handed starter Carlos Carrasco who did not put up his best performance but put forth a quality outing going 5.2 innings and allowed 3 runs on 8 hits, 1 walk and had 8 strikeouts. Relievers Frank Herrmann, Mike Gosling, and Steven Wright combined to throw 3.1 innings of relief and allowed 1 run on 2 hits, 3 walks and had 3 strikeouts.

Aeros and B-Mets Suspended, Game To Resume Friday
The opening night contest between the Aeros and the Binghamton Mets was suspended in the middle of the fifth inning Thursday night due to a torrential downpour. The suspended game is scheduled to be completed Friday evening at 5:05 PM with the regularly scheduled game to be played afterward as a seven-inning contest.
At the time of the downpour, the B-Mets were trailing Akron 7-2 thanks to a five-run fifth inning output from the Aeros off starter Eric Niesen and reliever Derrick Ellison.
Binghamton was in a 2-0 early hole early, but rallied to tie in the fourth on a two-run homer from left fielder Lucas Duda.
Game two in this four-game series will follow the completion of the suspended game, set for a 5:05 p.m. start. Lefty Scott Barnes makes his first start of the season against Binghamton's Dylan Owen.
Dash Downs Kinston 7-1 on Opening Night
In front of an Opening Night crowd of 4,062 fans, Winston-Salem beat Kinston 7-1 Thursday night at Historic Grainger Stadium. Winston-Salem shortstop Eduardo Escobar had a great Dash debut, going 4-for-5 with two rbi and a run scored.
Winston-Salem started the scoring in the top of the third inning when Drew Garcia reached on a walk and Justin Greene reached on an error by Kinston starting pitcher Kelvin De la Cruz. With one out in the inning, Escobar drove in both runs with a double. Escobar would score later in the inning on a wild pitch. Winston-Salem would add to their lead with a solo home run in the fourth inning by Kenny Williams Jr. and a solo shot in the fifth by Brandon Short. De La Cruz would take the loss, giving up seven hits and five runs (three unearned) in 4 2/3 innings of work. De La Cruz walked one and struck out four.
Dash starting pitcher Justin Edwards was great, giving up just five hits and one run in six strong innings. Edwards picked up the win, walking one and striking out three. Kinston got their only run of the game when Ronald Rivas tripled and Jordan Henry drove him in with an RBI single. Dan Remenowsky and Gregory Infante were solid from the Dash pen, combining for three scoreless innings. Santo Frias was good from the Kinston pen, giving up just one hit in 2 1/3 innings of work. Travis Turek gave up two unearned runs in two innings of work from the pen.
The K-Tribe returns to action Friday night at 7pm at Historic Grainger Stadium. Nick Hagadone will take the mound for Kinston.
Captains Win in Walk Off Fashion
The Lake County Captains made their Midwest League debut a memorable one as Roberto Perez doubled home Bo Greenwell in the bottom of the tenth inning to give the Captains a 4-2 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps Thursday night.
The Whitecaps scored three times in the top of the fourth inning on a RBI single by Jordan Lennerton that scored Wade Gaynor and then he came around to score when Michael Rocket hit a two run home run. The Captains got a run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Ben Carlson's sacrifice fly scored Kyle Smith to cut the lead to 3-1. The Captains tied it up in the bottom of the ninth inning when Carlson tripled home Adam Abraham and then came home to score when Greg Folgia hit a sacrifice fly.
Captains starter Trey Haley did not get a decision pitching four innings and allowing three runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out two. Chris Jones followed Haley and threw three scoreless innings allowing one hit, walking one and striking out six. Francisco Jimenez (1-0) worked three scoreless innings striking out two to pick up the win. He is 8-0 as a member of the Captains. Whitecaps starter Trevor Feeney got a no decision as well throwing six scoreless innings scattering three hits, walking one and striking out three. Luis Sanz pitched the tenth inning and suffered the loss.
The Captains and Whitecaps play game two of the three game series on Friday at 6:30 PM with the Captains sending RHP Joe Gardner (0-0, 0.00) to the hill to make his professional debut. He will face the Caps LHP Jade Todd (0-0, 0.00).
