Last Minute Roster Updates

Here are some last minute roster notes before the start of opening night in a few hours:

- Left-hander Erik Berger is opening the season on the Double-A Akron disabled list for an unknown injury at this time. It may just be a temporary thing and more to keep him inactive since the roster these next two weeks at Akron and Triple-A Columbus will likely be in constant flux. If I hear anything about an injury I will surely pass it along. For now left-hander Ryan Edell has replaced him in the rotation.

- Catcher Wyatt Toregas has cleared waivers and been assigned to Double-A Akron. He is currently set to be the everyday catcher at Akron, though his situation is still somewhat clouded as he could still be traded.

- Infielder Anderson Hernandez cleared waivers and was outrighted to Columbus. He takes the spot of infielder Luis Rodriguez who was reassigned to Mahoning Valley (inactive).

- Right-handed reliever Josh Judy, first baseman/outfielder Jordan Brown, infielder Niuman Romero, and infielder/outfielder Jerad Head are all on the 7-day disabled list to open the season.

- Right-handed pitcher Hector Ambriz and first baseman Russell Branyan are in Columbus on a rehab assignment.

- Right-hander Vinnie Pestano is active and will be the Akron closer.

- Catcher Dwight Childs is opening the season at High-A Kinston on the 7-day disabled list.

thats weird that luis rodriguez is inactive... is this another scott elarton situation?
also, about toregas, thats odd that he is outrighted to aa akron (but i also understand it is likely due to the depth at C in columbus), i read before that toregas has sort of an attitude and has needed to clear his head at times. during spring training this year he mentioned to me that if he didnt latch on with the indians that he would go somewhere else. it is fair to say that no one was really interested in him? could his demotion all the way to akron have something to do with his tendency to have an attitude?

Luis Rodriguez being inactive is more just a roster situation. Same with Niuman Romero. These guys are hanging out with Columbus as extra bodies as some changes are likely to go down with the big league club over the course of the next few weeks with bullpen and bench spots.

As for Toregas, I have to say I have only heard positive things about him. His pitchers love him, and in the few times i have spoken to him he is a very nice guy and has a willingness to talk. No doubt he is probably bitter at the moment about the whole situation. He wasn't demoted per se to Akron, it's just where he can get everyday at bats plus the Indians have a real need there at catcher. He was DFAed, and all other 29 clubs passed on him to claim him and add him to their 40-man roster, so maybe it was a reality check for him. That said, he was not a free agent nor had any opportunity to sign with someone else as first time removals from the 40-man don't get that right. Once every team passed on his waiver claim, he was still the property of the Indians and he could not negotiate a deal to go to another team even on a minor league deal.

Is Jeremy Sowers active in Columbus? If so, are they going with an 8-man pen, or is one of the other relievers inactive?

Sowers is in Columbus, but inactive. No idea when he will be active as he still has left arm soreness and recently had it examined.

Tony,

Just curious but are any of the guys that we signed a few years ago out of Austalia still in the organization?

Yeah, Jason Smit is with Lake County and Trent Baker is in extended spring training though is expected to join Lake COunty as soon as Cid moves to Kinston. Jacob Reust was released last spring training.

It occurs that Toregas has been passed over in favor of Marson, the question being, is Marson better, and by how much?

Are his tools better? He's a singles-doubles type hitter. Is it speed? Is it everything?

I thought they had similar spring stats, but it seems Toregas was no more in the Indians plans for 2010 than say, Damaso Espino.

I suppose Toregas isn't really a prospect anymore. Wow,

Yeah as soon as the Indians acquired Marson he became the second best catching prospect in the organization. He's just viewed as a better prospect than Toregas, mostly because he is nearly three years younger off the top of my head and he shows better skills at the plate with making consistent contact and getting on base. Toregas has more power and is better defensively. Toregas may still get a chance this year with the Indians, but his days with the club likely end at the end of the season when he becomes a minor league free agent.

I don't want to beat this dead horse too much but...I've been a bit curious about the way the Tribe has handled Toregas. It seems to me that he would be a perfect backup at the major league level (ultimately to Santana). That being the case, it seems that they should groom Marson the first half of this year as a showcase to trade him (Marson) once Santana gets established as the starter. I get that Marson is a better overall prospect but I don't think he adds all that much value above Toregas in the backup role. It comes down to asset management. If Toregas and Marson provide roughly the same value to the team as backups, then you should trade the one that will bring more in return, which I believe is Marson. So why are they so insistent on trading Toregas? Or maybe they aren't and are just biding their time? Or, maybe Marson's trade value isn't really all that much better than Toregas', in which case...never mind!

Yeah, they need to find out on Marson, plus he is the better catching prospect. Toregas is at best a major league backup, but considering every team passed on him maybe he is not valued as much as we think. Marson has the potential to be a solid everyday catcher, so the Indians need to see if that is the case and if so it provides an opp to showcase him for an offseason trade if need be. No need to trade Marson now, and I think Toregas misspoke when he said that the Indians would try to trade him (he may not understand roster rules and thought DFA was a trade). Indians haven't said anything about trading him.

Great to see Vinnie Pestano on the way back to playing again in Akron! If there was one thing missing from the championship last season, it was Pestano who was the true catalyst in the first half. He was up near the MiLB leaders in saves until his injury.
