Indians Option Brantley To Columbus

The Cleveland Indians today announced they have optioned OF MICHAEL BRANTLEY to AAA Columbus.  Brantley opened the season with Cleveland and has hit .156 (5-32) with 1 double, 3RBI and 4 runs scored in 9 games so far this season.

To assume Brantley's place on the 25-man roster the Indians are expected to activate INF RUSSELL BRANYAN from the 15-day disabled list prior to tomorrow night's game in Minnesota.  Branyan, who was signed to a free agent Major League contract on February 24, was placed on the disabled list on April 3 and appeared in 6 games on a recent rehab assignment at AAA Columbus and AA Akron (6-22, ,273, 2 2B, 1RBI, 2RS).  The played full 9.0 inning games at first base this past weekend at AA Akron (April 16 & 18).

Tony,

Have you heard who will be deactivated in Columbus to make room for Brantley? I would think it would likely be Horwitz or Constanza, although it could be Gimenez also.

Brian, nothing official yet from Columbus, but I agree in that I have to think Horowitz is the guy who is likely deactivated.

It's a pity that they couldn't keep him up long enough for him to get a handle on big league pitching. Is his arbitration clock messed up now or will he avoid being a 'super 2'?

No his arbitration clock is fine. If he spends about the next six weeks in Columbus, it will have been fixed and aligned just how they want it.

It's a shame that LaPorta will be punished by this; he has played a surprisingly (to me, at least) beautiful first base these first two weeks.
