The K-Tribe snapped a six game skid, shutting out Wilmington 4-0 Tuesday night in Delaware.
Kinston pitching was great again tonight, as starter Nick Hagadone gave up just two hits in 4 2/3 innings. Hagadone struck out three and walked one. Hagadone has not given up an earned run in three starts this season. T.J. McFarland got the win out of the pen, getting Hagadone out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth inning and then cruising the rest of the way. McFarland (1-0), gave up just one hit over 4 1/3 innings, walking two and striking out two. McFarland has not giving up an earned run in two relief appearances this season.
Kinston had their biggest inning of the year in the top of the fourth. Jason Kipnis led off the frame with a single, and Abner Abreu followed with a one-out double. Kyle Bellows would drive both home with a two RBI single. After a Cristo Arnal walk loaded the bases, Wilmington starter Tim Melville walked both Karexon Sanchez and Donnie Webb, driving home Bellows and Pena. Kinston sent a season high ten men to the plate in the fourth inning. Kipnis went 2-for-5 for Kinston, as every K-Tribe starter but one reached base safely.
The four game series continues with game three Wednesday night at 6:45 pm in Delaware. Greenville, NC native Alex White will be on the mound for Kinston (4-8). White currently leads the Carolina League in ERA, as he has not given up an earned run in 9 1/3 innings of work.
Indians Rock Rondon, Beat Clippers
The 2010 version of Hector Rondon could use a dose of the pitcher he was against Indianapolis in 2009. For his 2nd straight outing against the Indians, Rondon allowed 7 runs in less than 4 innings and he again suffered the loss in a 9-4 Clippers defeat.
The Venezuelan right-hander was strong through the 1st three innings, allowing no runs, but the wheels came off in the 4th inning. Rondon allowed 7 runs on 7 hits, including 3 home runs before being chased from the mound.
Columbus rallied for 3 runs in the 6th inning against starter Donnie Veal. Trevor Crowe scored on a Jason Donald double and Donald came around on a Shelly Duncan ground out. Brian Bixler plated Carlos Santana later in the inning on a single to make it a 7-3 game. Anderson Hernandez got the Clippers to within three with a solo home run in the 7th, but that was as close as Columbus would get.
Indianapolis tacked on 2 insurance runs in the 7th for the final run count. Steve Pearce continued his hot hitting ways against the Clippers with a 3 for 4 night, raising his season average vs. Columbus to .560 (14/25). Hector Ambriz pitched another scoreless inning as he continued his Major League rehab assignment.
The 2nd and last game of the short series will be an 11:00am 1st pitch with Jeanmar Gomez pitching for Columbus against an Indianapolis hurler yet to be determined.
Aeros Lose 2-0
The Akron Aeros fell to the Altoona Curve in the second game of the three-game series 2-0 Tuesday night. Aeros pitching allowed another eight walks during the game Tuesday, while striking out six Altoona batters. The Aeros fall a game under .500 with a record of 6-7 on the season after Tuesday’s loss to the Curve.
The Aeros fell behind in the first inning when Altoona took a 1-0 lead in the top of the inning on a series of singles, which was started by Miles Durham. The Aeros would remain hitless until the sixth inning when Lonnie Chisenhall connected with his fourth double of the year to right-field. The Aeros would record only one more hit on the night, which would come the very next inning when Cord Phelps would single to the second baseman.
Aeros bats have gone quiet since returning home, while on the road the Aeros put up a combined 42 runs compared to only 12 runs since returning to Canal Park on Thursday.
Aeros starter Connor Graham made it through 4.2 innings on Tuesday night against the Curve. Graham gave up four hits and only one run while walking five and striking out three batters. Graham is now 0-2 on the year with a 7.07 ERA through three starts for Akron. Graham has given up a total of 12 runs in 14 innings of work this season.
The Aeros bullpen rebounded from their shaky performance Monday night as they only allowed one run. Erik Stiller, Chen Lee, Brian Grening and Vinnie Pestano all worked in the game for a combined 4.1 innings of work after Graham was replaced in the game. Brian Grening rebounded nicely from his rough outing on Monday night, walking none and only allowing two hits in one inning of work after walking in a run on Monday night. The Aeros walked a combined 8 batters during the contest at Canal Park before losing two straight to Altoona 2-0.
The Aeros continue their final game of the three-game set with the Altoona Curve tomorrow morning at 10:35 a.m. at Canal Park.
Long Ball Hurts the Captains
The Great lakes Loons collected six of their seven runs via the home run ball as they defeated the Lake County Captains 7-5 on Tuesday. With the win, the Loons are now two games behind the first place Captains.
The Loons jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Johan Garcia grounded out scoring J.T. Wise. The Loons added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning on a two run home run by Angelo Songco and it was 3-0. The Captains got a run back in the bottom of the fourth inning when Chun Chen singled home Roberto Perez to make it 3-1. The Loons blew the game open when J.T. Wise blasted a grand slam home run off of Captains reliever Rob Bryson in the top of the sixth inning to up the lead to 7-1. Chen added another RBI in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 7-2.
The Captains made it interesting scoring three times in the bottom of the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Jeremie Tice and a two run double from Adam Abraham to end the scoring at 7-5.
Captains starter Chris Jones (1-1) took the loss throwing five innings allowing three runs on four hits while striking out two. Bryson came on in the sixth inning and allowed four runs on four, walking one and striking out three. Matt Packer pitched two scoreless innings striking out one. Loons starter Allen Webster (3-0) got the win working five innings and allowing one run on three hits, walking one and striking out five. Luis Vasquez got his third save pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
The Captains and Loons square off in game two of the three games series on Wednesday at 6:30 with the Captains sending RHP Austin Adams (0-0, 0.00) to the mound to face the Loons RHP Will Savage (1-0, 1.42).

I went to the Aeros game tonight. Pretty sad only seeing two hits. Graham was a magician to only give up one run (and it was unearned) as he left two men on base in each inning he pitched. Stiller and Pestano looked great and Grening was okay tonight. I had to watch CC Lee struggle with a 37 pitch inning in which he walked three, but only gave up one run. This one could have been 7-0 easy.
Graham is still walking way too many guys. Also the bats have really been silent at Akron and Kinston in the early going while all the hitting has been in Columbus and Lake County.
What is with the bats at Kinston, Akron and Columbus? All three teams are underachieving, both as a team, and individually, save for a few hot bats.
