Yohan Pino looked like Johan Santana circa 2004 for 3 innings Thursday night, striking out 7 batters and allowing only two weak hits and throwing only 12 pitches out of the strike zone. The 4th inning unfortunately turned out to be a disaster for the Clippers righty. Pino walked two, hit a man and allowed 2 hits that turned into 4 runs for the Toledo Mud Hens and a 4-2 lead in the ballgame.
Columbus had scored in the 1st inning on a pair of RBI singles by Wes Hodges and Shelley Duncan, but after a shaky beginning, Hens starter Alfredo Figaro settled down and held the Clippers in check through 5.2 frames. Columbus chipped away late against the Toledo bullpen. Jason Donald pulled the Clippers to within a run with an RBI single in the 7th and Anderson Hernandez drove in a run in the 8th to tie the game at 4-4.
On in relief, Hector Ambriz escaped a bases-loaded jam in the 7th, but Jess Todd was not as lucky in the 8th. Todd walked two men and hit a batter to load the bases. After striking out Brent Dlugach for the 2nd out, it looked like Todd might slip out of trouble, but Brennan Bosch came through for Toledo and drove in a pair of runs for a 6-4 lead. Jay Sborz entered in the 9th for the Hens, having not allowed a run in 6 appearances on the season and remained prefect for his 5th save of the season.
Game 2 of the series will feature lefty Scott Lewis pitching for Columbus and veteran right-hander Ruddy Lugo going for Toledo. First pitch is slated for 7:00PM.
Aeros Baffled Again In Loss
The Bowie Baysox picked up seven extra base hits en route to beating the Akron Aeros 7-2 Thursday at Prince George’s Stadium.
Baysox starter Tim Bascom picked up his second win of the season with an impressive one-run, one-walk game in seven innings that left him with a 1.00 ERA. He fell behind early, as he walked Tim Fedroff to start the game and threw a wild pitch to the next batter to move Fedroff to second. Lonnie Chisenhall drove Fedroff in with a single to left before Bascome found a groove. After the RBI single, Bascom retired the next six batters he faced and nine of the next 10.
Lefty Ryan Edell got the start for the Aeros and in three innings was touched up pretty good to the tune of 10 hits, 7 runs, 1 walk along with 2 strikeouts. Righty Omar Aguilar was impressive in relief going three shutout innings with six strikeouts. Offensively, the Aeros were led by third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall (2-for-4, RBI) and DH Matt McBride (2-for-4, HR, RBI).
The series continues Friday night in Bowie as Zach Putnam (2-0, 1.20 ERA) takes the mound for the Aeros against Bowie southpaw Zach Britton (1-1, 3.86 ERA).
K-Tribe Splits Double Header with Wilmington
Kinston split a double header with Wilmington on Thursday night in Delaware, winning game one 7-4 and falling in game two 4-3.
Greenville native Alex White got the start for Kinston in game one, but ran into trouble early when the first four batters he faced reached base safely. After walking the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the first inning, Eric Hosmer singled off of White to load the bases. Wilmington’s Jamie Romak gave the Blue Rocks a 1-0 lead on an RBI single. Jamar Walton followed with an RBI ground out and Jason Taylor made the score 3-0 with a sacrifice fly. White would then settle in, keeping Wilmington scoreless until Jason Taylor hit a solo home run to lead of the fourth inning. White went four innings, giving up four hits and four earned runs. He walked three and struck out one. White is now 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA.
Trailing 4-1 going into the top of the sixth inning, the K-Tribe bats finally awoke as Nate Recknagel and Abner Abreu led off with back-to-back singles. Kyle Bellows then walked to load the bases and Recknagel was balked in by Wilmington pitcher Eric Basurto. Kinston would tie the game at four later in the inning when Adam Davis hit a two RBI double with two outs. Davis fouled off a couple of two strike pitches before lining the double to the right field wall.
Wilmington had great chances to win in both the seventh and eighth innings. In the bottom of the seventh Adrian Ortiz led of the inning with an infield single and advanced all the way to third on a throwing error by Kinston third baseman Kyle Bellows. Wilmington could have walked off with the win (in the regularly scheduled seven inning game), but Kinston reliever David Roberts snagged a screaming line drive off the bat of Patrick Norris. After an intentional walk, Bellows would redeem himself making a fantastic snag on a hot two hopper up the third base line. His glove work started a double play and Kinston got out of the seventh.
In the eighth inning, an error by Donnie Webb in left field allowed Wilmington leadoff man Jamar Walton to get to third base. After a Jason Taylor pop out, former ECU Pirate Ryan Wood hit a ground on the left side of the infield. Bellows made another fantastic play, diving to his left, snagging the grounder and from one knee, making the throw home to cut down Walton.
Kinston would get the offense started again in the top of the ninth inning when Donnie Webb led off with a single. After a one out Lucas Montero walk and Abner Abreu single, the bases were loaded with one away. Bellows struck out, by Richard Martinez hit a bases clearing double to the wall for the 7-4 lead.
Matt Langwell (1-0) picked up the win from the pen and Steve Smith got his third save of the season. Roberts pitched three scoreless innings, giving up just three hits.
In game two the K-Tribe trailed 2-0 going into the top of the fifth inning. In the fifth frame Abreu led off with a double and Martin drove him with an RBI single. After a single by Pena, Ronald Rivas grounded into a fielder’s choice for the second out of the inning. With two on and two out, Karexon Sanchez hit a sinking line drive to center field, Wilmington’s Patrick Norris went for the dive and the ball rolled all the way to the wall. Martinez and Rivas both scored, giving Kinston a temporary 3-2 lead.
With K-Tribe reliever Brett Brach making his Carolina League debut, things would get sloppy in the fifth inning when Adrian Ortiz and Norris reached base on back to back singles to lead off the inning. Eric Hosmer then grounded a ball to short for a potential double play, but Kipnis dropped the toss from Rivas and Ortiz would score from third. After another Kipnis error, a Brach walk would load the bases. Bryce Stowell was then called in from the bullpen and walked Wilmington’s Juan Graterol, putting the Blue Rocks up 4-3. Brach (0-1) is the tough luck loser of game two. T.J. House started the game for Kinston giving up two unearned runs on three hits in four innings. House walked two and struck out five. Former ECU Pirate Ryan Wood goes a combined 0-for-6 on the night.
The K-Tribe returns to Historic Grainger Stadium at 7 pm for a Fireworks Friday against Myrtle Beach. Joey Mahalic set to make the start for Kinston.
Big Inning Costs the Captains
The Great Lakes Loons capitalized on a big offensive inning and great pitching to defeat the Lake County Captains 5-0 on Thursday. The Loons took two of the three games of the series and are now two games behind the first place Captains. This was the first time this year that the Captains have been shut out.
The Loons put five runs on the board in the top of the third inning against Captains starter Clayton Cook highlighted by a two run home run by Jerry Sands. It was his third home run in the last two games. Two batters were walked in the inning and both came around to score.
Cook (0-2) took the loss pitching five innings and allowing five runs, four earned on four hits, walking three and striking out six. Antwonie Hubbard relieved Cook and threw three scoreless innings allowing one hit, walking one and striking out five. Francisco Jimenez pitched a scoreless ninth inning striking out one. The Captains struck out twelve Loons. Loons starter Elisaul Pimentel (1-1) got the win going five scoreless innings and allowing only one hit while walking two and striking out six. Andy Suitor, J.B. Paxson combined for four scoreless relief innings. The Captains struck out a season high fourteen times and collected a season low two hits.
The Captains travel to Bowling Green, KY on Friday at 8:00 PM to start a three game series against the Hot Rods. The Captains will have RHP Trey Haley (0-0, 6.92) on the mound to take on the Hot Rods RHP Alexander Colome (0-1, 4.61).
