Game Recap 4/25: Kinston Bats Explode For Six Home Runs

K-Tribe Pounds Pelicans 15-2

Kinston exploded for 15 runs on 15 hits including six home runs, as the Indians pounded the Pelicans 15-2 Sunday afternoon at Historic Grainger Stadium. It was the first time Kinston put up six home runs in a contest, since doing it against Myrtle Beach on June 8th, 2007. The K-Tribe belted three of their sixth home runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, the first time they have had three long balls in a single frame since May 12th, 2007 against Potomac. With the win Kinston took two of three games from Myrtle Beach, winning their first series of the season.

The hit parade started when Doug Pickens hit a solo shot off of Myrtle Beach starter Cole Rohrbough in the bottom of the second inning. Karexon Sanchez would add an RBI single later in the inning to put Kinston up 2-0. The Indians blew the game open in the third inning, batting around for six runs on four hits and two walks. Roman Pena had a two-run home run and Adam Davis had a solo shot in the frame. Pickens had a sacrifice fly in the inning and Abner Abreu added a two RBI double. Pickens was at it again in the fourth inning when he delivered an RBI single to make the score 9-1. Pickens went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI. He had an RBI in three consecutive innings from the second through the fourth frame. The K-Tribe would add another run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Pena. The bats would quite down until the seventh inning when Davis and Sanchez belted back-to-back home runs. Later in the inning Nate Recknagel hit a two-run shot after Kipnis walked. It was the second home run in consecutive days for Recknagel. The final run of the game came in the form of Pena scoring on a Sanchez sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth. Coming into the contest, Kinston had hit four home runs in their first 16 games of the season.

Every K-Tribe batter hit safely in the 15 hit triumph as Sanchez, Montero, Kipnis and Pickens each had two hits. Davis went 3-for-5 with two home runs. Sanchez, Pickens and Pena each had three RBI for the K-Tribe.

Kinston again got great pitching as Nick Hagadone and T.J. McFarland combined for the solid outing. Hagadone got the start, giving up five hits and one earned run in three innings. He walked two and struck out five, his ERA is now 0.56. McFarland (2-0) picks up the win, giving up just four hits and one earned run in six strong innings. McFarland struck out four and did not walk a batter. McFarland’s ERA is now 0.68. Kinston (7-10) has now won four of their last six games.

After an off day on Monday, Greenville, NC native Alex White will take the mound for Kinston on Tuesday night against Lynchburg. Game time 7 pm.

Clippers Fall In Return Home

The Clippers and Toledo Mud Hens resumed their five-game series Sunday afternoon at Huntington Park, with the change of scenery helping Toledo to the tune of a 3-2 victory.

Jeff Larish's two-run blast in the third inning proved to be the difference for the Mud Hens. The Clippers, including starter Hector Rondon (0-2), didn't allow a hit after that, but their offense was held in check.

The Clippers scratched across two runs in the fourth against Toledo starter Armando Galarraga (3-1). Galarraga, however, was effective for the second time in as many tries against the Clippers this season, scattering four hits across six innings.

Jay Storz picked up his seventh save of the season in as many tries for the Mud Hens, pitching around a base hit and stolen base by Jose Constanza in the process.

The rubber-game of the series starts Monday night at 6:35 at Huntington Park, with Jeanmar Gomez getting the ball for Columbus.

Aeros Win Second In A Row

The Akron Aeros beat the Bowie Baysox 9-3 Sunday afternoon at Prince George’s Stadium.

Bowie starting pitcher Chorye Spoone struggled in his third start of the year, walking six batters and giving up 10 hits as the Aeros rung up seven runs in his four and one- third inning performance. Akron attacked him early with a two-run double by designated hitter Beau Mills in the first inning. Mills advanced to third when Spoone loaded the bases with two walks in a row and scored off shortstop Josh Rodriguez’s infield single to put the Aeros up 3-0.

The Aeros expanded their lead with a run in the top of the second inning with a sacrifice fly by Matt McBride and another run in the third inning on an RBI single by outfielder Nick Weglarz, but Waring kept his side in the game with a two-run blast to left field in the bottom of the third to make the score 5-3 after three innings. Akron piled on with two more runs off Spoone in the fifth inning, including a solo-shot home run by Rodriguez, and hung another two-spot on Baysox reliever Chad Thall in the ninth inning to split the four-game series.

Connor Graham got the win for the Aeros going five innings and allowing two earned runs on five hits, three walks, and had three strikeouts. Omar Aguilar, Brian Grening, and Chen Lee combined for four shutout innings out of the bullpen to preserve the win.

The Aeros now travel to Altoona for the first time in 2010, beginning a three game set with the Curve Monday night at 6:30 p.m. The Aeros have yet to announce a starter against Altoona's Tim Alderson (1-0, 5.52 ERA).

Captains and Hot Rods Spilt Double Header

Lake County and Bowling Green split the doubleheader Sunday afternoon. Lake County took game one, defeating the Hot Rods 1-0. Game two was all Bowling Green as they shut out Lake County 3-0. The Captains won the series taking two of the three games over the weekend.

Lake County came away with a game one victory scoring the only run of the game in the seventh inning. With one out, Greg Folgia turned a routine single into a double by hustling out of the box. Delvi Cid was used as a pinch run for Folgia. Hot Rods pitcher Scott Shuman’s pickoff attempt on Cid was over thrown and went all the way to the centerfield wall allowing Cid to score easily giving the Captains a 1-0 lead.

Chris Jones (2-1) earned the win going three scoreless innings to finish the ball game, allowing just one hit and striking out three. Shuman (0-1) suffered the loss allowing the game winning run on his throwing error.

In game two, Bowling Green scored a pair of the runs in the second, an RBI ground out by Ty Morrison. Brett Nommensen RBI single scored the second run putting the Hot Rods up 2-0.

Bowling Green added an insurance run in the sixth, when Kyle Spraker scored on a Nick Sariandes wild pitch, making it 3-0.

Shane Dyer (1-1) was fantastic against the Captains, allowing just four hits over seven innings and striking out six in a complete game shutout win. Danny Salazar (0-1) suffered the loss allowing two runs on five hits over four innings, walking two and striking out three.

Lake County (14-4) will enjoy an off day on Monday and will resume action in Dayton (9-9) as they start a three game series with the Dragons (Reds). Marty Popham (2-0) will get the start for the Captains, and Dayton will counter with Justin Walker (0-2).
