Game Recap 4/17: Pino, Clippers Upstage Chapman

Columbus Beats Bats, Chapman

The Clippers (6-3) earned probably their most impressive victory of the season on Saturday afternoon as they beat highly touted Reds prospect Aroldis Chapman and the Louisville bats 3-1.

Chapman has become almost become something of a legend because of his 100 MPH fastball and the big contract he signed with the Reds in the offseason. But he proved to be mortal on Saturday afternoon as he took the loss and only made it through five innings and in the process allowed one run on one hit, four walks and had just one strikeout.

The star of the game ended up being Clippers right-handed starter Yohan Pino who went seven shutout innings and allowed just four hits, one walk and piled up six strikeouts. Since being picked up by the Indians last August as the player to be named in the Carl Pavano trade from the Twins, he has impressed and really opened the eyes of Indians personnel this spring. An outing like he had on Saturday in such a high profile game will only open those eyes further.

The Clippers only managed four hits, one each by Carlos Santana, Brian Buscher, Chris Gimenez, and Brian Bixler. Shelley Duncan had an RBI sacrifice fly in the first inning, Santana an RBI single in the sixth inning, and Brian Horwitz had a sacrifice fly RBI to close out the Clippers' scoring in the ninth inning.

The Clippers play a doubleheader on Sunday as game one will be a makeup game due to Friday night's rainout. Scott Lewis will start one of the games, but it is unknown who will start the other though it is likely that Jeremy Sowers will get the spot start.

Aeros Skid Continues With 3-2 Loss to Bowie

The Akron Aeros suffered their third straight loss at home with a 3-2 loss to the visiting Bowie Baysox on Saturday afternoon at Canal Park. The loss drops the Aeros to 5-5 on the young 2010 season.

The Aeros jumped out to an early lead in the first inning when Tim Fedroff walked to start the bottom of the 1st inning. After Fedroff stole second, Matt McBride singled through a hole at shortstop allowing Fedroff to come around and score putting the Aeros up 1-0 after one inning.  Aeros starter Ryan Edell continued his early season dominance by pitching six innings and allowing only three hits. Edell’s only mistake was in the top of the 4th when he served up a two out home run to third baseman Brandon Waring. After giving up the home run, Edell finished the day with another two solid innings while striking out a total of five Bowie batters.

The Aeros answered back in the bottom of the sixth inning against Bowie reliever Pedro Beato with a two-out rally of their own. Cord Phelps tied the game when he connected with his second home run of the season which sailed into the right field bleachers making the score 2-2.

The game remained tied until Miguel Abreu singled up the middle, Paco Figueroa laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt and Brandon Waring connected on a single to left-field making the score 3-2 going into the bottom of the 8th inning.

Edell worked six innings and allowed just three hits and two runs while striking out five. Bryan Price who has struggled at times this season came in and pitched two innings, giving up three runs while walking only one Baysox. Price suffered the loss by allowing one run, on three hits and also issued one walk.

The Aeros will host the Baysox in the fourth and final game of the series on Sunday afternoon at 1:35 at Canal Park.

K-Tribe Drops Fourth Straight

Kinston lost their fourth straight game on Saturday night in Winston-Salem, as a three-run first inning by Winston-Salem propelled the Dash to a 7-3 victory over the K-Tribe (3-6). The win was the fourth in a row for the Dash (6-3).

The Dash came out swinging with three straight hits off of K-Tribe starter T.J. House. The final hit was a two RBI double by Jon Gilmore. After House walked Seth Loman, he got Kenny Williams to pop out for the first out of the inning. With runners at first and second, Luis Sierra bounced a ball to Kinston second baseman Jason Kipnis for a potential inning ending double play. After the force out at second, however, Kinston shortstop Ronald Rivas threw wide of first as the third run of the game would score on the error. The Dash would take a 4-0 lead in the second inning after a leadoff double by Drew Garcia who was driven home by an RBI groundout from Brandon Short.

The K-Tribe would get on the board in the fifth inning, when Donnie Webb led off with a double and Kyle Bellows drove him home with an RBI single.

Kinston reliever David Roberts entered in the sixth inning, and was greeted rudely by a Luis Sierra single and a long home run to right field by Drew Garcia, making the score 6-1. The Dash’s final run came on an eighth inning RBI double by Ozzie Lewis.

The K-Tribe would rally for two runs in the top of the ninth off Dash reliever Santiago Rodriguez, as Nate Recknagel and Donnie Webb each singled with one out. Kyle Bellows hit a broken bat grounder to short, and the tumbling bathead interfered with Eduardo Escobar’s attempt to field the ball as it went into left field for an RBI single. Doug Pickens followed with a sacrifice fly to score Webb, but a Cristo Arnal groundout ended the comeback attempt.

Dash right-hander Nevin Griffith (2-0) allowed one run in seven innings to beat the K-Tribe for the second time this season. House (0-2) took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits in five innings. He walked and struck out a pair.

The K-Tribe ends the series with Winston-Salem Sunday afternoon at 2 pm in the Triad. Joey Mahalic will get the start on the mound for the K-Tribe.

The Captains got on the board in the bottom of the second inning when Chun Chen hit a solo home run to cut the Fort Wayne lead to 2-1. The TinCaps made it 4-2 in the top of the fifth inning when Nate Freiman hit a solo home run off of Captains reliever Matt Packer, his third homer of the year.
