Captains' leftfielder Bo Greenwell was at it again Wednesday night collecting another three hits, and it was his two-run single capping off a three run second inning that proved to be the difference as Lake County won their seventh straight beating Lansing, 7-3.
It was the home opener for the Lugnuts and the Captains jumped out in front on Chun Chen's RBI double in the first for 1-0 lead.
Lake County made it 5-0 in the fourth, after Roberto Perez singled to score Delvi Cid.
Starting Pitcher Joe Gardner making his second professional start, retired the first nine hitters he faced, but in the bottom of the fourth inning he struggled. Lansing scored twice, making it 5-2, thanks mostly to a pair of throwing errors from Gardner, two walks to go with a pair of base hits.
Delvi Cid and Argenis Martinez hit back to back RBI singles in fifth inning getting the Captains back up by five, 7-2.
Gardner (1-0) picked up the win going five innings allowing two runs, one of them earned, walking two and striking out seven. Matt Fields (0-1) suffered his first loss, throwing four innings allowing five runs, three of the five unearned, from the result of his second inning throwing error.
Lake County and Lansing will play again Thursday night at 7:05PM. The Captains will send RHP Danny Salazar (0-0) to the mound against Lugnuts starter RHP Dave Sever (0-1).
Clippers sneak past Toledo 3-2
Brain Bixler had only one hit in Wednesday night's duel with the visiting Toledo Mud Hens, but it was a game-winner to send the Columbus Clippers on to a 3-2 victory. For Columbus it was their 4th consecutive win.
Columbus started the scoring in the 2nd inning when Anderson Hernandez plated Carlos Santana with a sacrifice fly. The Clippers tacked on another in the 4th on a Brian Horwitz RBI double. Hector Rondon muffled the Mud Hens for 4 innings, until allowing a solo home run to Jeff Frazier to cut the lead to 2-1. Toledo would tie the game in the 6th with an unearned run to set up Bixler as the hero. Rondon would pitch 6 innings, striking out 5 and allowing 1 earned run.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the 8th, Bixler strode to the plate facing hard-throwing lefty Daniel Schlereth. On a 2-1 pitch, Bixler got around on a fastball and dropped a single into left field to drive in the final run of the game. Frank Herrmann finished off the Mud Hens in relief of winner Mike Gosling for his 1st save of the year.
The 2nd game of the series kicks off on Thursday morning at 11:35. Armando Galarraga pitches for Toledo against the Clippers Jeanmar Gomez.
Aeros Blow 3-0 Lead, Fall 4-3
A bloop and a blast in the bottom of the seventh inning sparked Trenton’s 4-3 comeback victory over Akron in Wednesday’s series finale at Waterfront Park. With the loss, Akron falls to 5-2 on the season.
Trenton would score all four of their runs in the 7th inning off of Akron pitcher Brian Price. Reid Gorecki led off the frame with a bunt single, and Damon Sublett would then connect on a 2-run home run to rightfield to cut the Akron lead in half. The next batter, Daniel Brewer, was hit by a pitch and Jose Gil reached on an error by the pitcher. They would both score on a 2-run double by Austin Krum to put the Thunder ahead for good 4-3.
Lefty Scott Barnes started the game for the Aeros and threw five shutout-hitless innings allowing one walk with three strikeouts. Third baseman Jared Goedert (2-for-5, 2 RBI) and catcher Alex Castillo (2-for-4, 2 2B) were most of the offense Akron could muster in their five hit attack.
The Aeros return home Thursday night to take on the Bowie Baysox, as it's opening night at Canal Park at 7:05 p.m. Bowie's Chorye Spoone (0-0, 4.50 ERA) takes the mound against Connor Graham (0-0, 13.50 ERA).
Wilmington Shuts Down K-Tribe
Wilmington pitching shut down the K-Tribe batters for a second straight game, as Tim Melville pitched Wilmington to a 1-0 win in the series rubber match on Wednesday afternoon at Historic Grainger Stadium. Melville (1-0) handed Kinston their first shutout of the season, pitching five innings and allowing just one hit while striking out eight and walking one.
Kinston was held to a season-low two hits for the second game in a row and did not advance a runner past second base.
Nick Hagadone (0-1) was the tough-luck loser for the Indians, as he delivered his second solid outing of the season, allowing just an unearned run on five hits in four innings and striking out six. The lone run of the game came in the third inning. With one out, Patrick Norris reached on a bunt single and moved to second on a throwing error by Roman Pena. The next batter, Adrian Ortiz, drove in Norris with a single to leftfield.
Kinston (3-4) will have an off day on Thursday before taking their first road trip of the season, beginning a three-game series on Friday night in Winston-Salem.
