Game Recap 4/16: Captains Go Extra To Stay Unbeaten

Captains Come Back, Now 9-0

The Lake County Captans climbed out of a 3-0 hole to tie it before ultimately prevailing in 10 innings 6-3. The win is their ninth in a row to start the season, and their 9-0 start is the best ever start in franchise history.

Right-handed pitcher Austin Adams started the game for the Captains and threw four shutout innings allowing two hits and two walks while striking out three. Right-hander Marty Popham came into the game in relief of Adams in the fifth inning and promptly allowed three runs and he finished the night going three innings and allowing those three runs on four hits, three walks and had one strikeout.

Right-hander Rob Bryson got the win with two impressive shutout innings in relief allowing one hit and no walks while putting away four hitters with strikeouts. Right-hander Cory Burns came in for the tenth inning to earn his fourth save of the season.

Shortstop Kyle Smith led a 14-hit Captains attack going 3-for-5 with the decisive double in the tenth inning which was eventually the game winning run. Outfielder Greg Folgia went 1-for-4 with 2 RBI and third baseman Casey Crawley went 2-for-4 with an RBI and walk.

Lake County returns home on Saturday looking to extend their winning streak to ten games. Right-hander Clayton Cook takes the mound for the Captains. Game time is at 4:05 PM EST.

Aeros Drop Second Straight at Home 4-2

The Akron Aeros suffered their second straight loss on their opening seven-game homestand with a 4-2 loss to the visiting Bowie Baysox on Friday night at Canal Park. The loss drops the Aeros to 5-4 on the season.

The Baysox jumped out to an early lead in the second inning against Aeros starter Paolo Espino. After retiring the first two batters, Espino walked Tyler Henson and Blake Davis to put two on with two outs. Pedro Florimon lined a single down the right-field line to score Henson and put Bowie in front 1-0.

The Aeros answered back in the third inning against Bowie starter Ryohei Tanaka with a two-out rally of their own. Tim Fedroff started things off with a single and Lonnie Chisenhall followed with a double into the left field corner that scored Fedroff all the way from first base to tie the game 1-1.

Bowie wasted little time reclaiming the lead in the fourth inning. Joel Guzman led the inning off with a double to deep left-center field and moved to third on a ground out by Caleb Joseph. Espino then got Henson to ground out but a wild pitch to the next batter allowed Guzman to score and give the Baysox the lead back at 2-1.

After the pitcher’s duel continued for the next two frames, the Aeros tied the game in the sixth. Chisenhall started the inning with a walk and rehabbing Cleveland Indians first basemen Russell Branyan lined a single back up the middle to put two runners on with no outs. Tanaka retired the next two batters but Carlos Rivero delivered a two-out base hit to center that scored Chisenhall to tie the game 2-2.

The Baysox took advantage of miscues by the Aeros defense in the ninth inning. Aeros reliever Chen Lee walked Brandon Waring to start the inning and Guzman followed with a base hit to right and Waring advanced on to third base on a fielding error by Matt McBride. Joseph came through with a sacrifice fly to score the go-ahead run in Waring and make it 3-2 in favor of the Baysox. Florimon added an insurance run with a base hit to left to score Guzman to increase the lead to 4-2.

Branyan finished his first rehab game with the Aeros going 1-for-4 with a single and played the entire game at first base.

Espino worked five innings and allowed just three hits and two runs but walked four batters while striking out three. Omar Aguilar was impressive out of the bullpen as he struck out five of the six batters he faced in two innings of work. Lee suffered the loss in two innings of work by allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits and also issued three walks.

The Aeros will host the Baysox in the third game of a four-game series on Saturday afternoon at 1:35.

Errors Cost K-Tribe in 4-2 Loss

Friday night, in Kinston’s first game ever at BB&T Ballpark in downtown, Winston-Salem turned four K-Tribe errors into four unearned runs in a 4-2 victory.

Indians pitcher and Greenville, N.C. native Alex White (1-1) had another strong start, but it was undone by three unearned runs in the fourth inning. White allowed five hits while walking two and striking out five in his first professional loss. White gave up three runs, but all were unearned.

The K-Tribe started the scoring in the second inning, when Ronald Rivas delivered an RBI single scoring Kyle Bellows. Winston-Salem would come back and take the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, capitalizing on K-Tribe mistakes. White walked back-to-back batters with one out in the inning. The K-Tribe let a potential inning ending double play slip through their fingers when Rivas mishandled a ball at second base. Rivas was charged with an error and the bases were loaded. After White struck out Ozzie Lewis for the second out of the inning, Rivas threw low to second on a grounder by Drew Garcia. Rivas was charged with his second error of the inning and Seth Loman scored to tie the game at one. Justin Greene gave the Dash the lead one batter later, lining a two-rbi single to right. The Greene base knock was the only hit of the inning, as all three runs scored were unearned.

Rivas tried to atone for his errors in the top of the six, as he knocked in his second run of the game with an infield single, scoring Kyle Bellows. The next batter, Lucas Montero, sent a liner to the gap in right-center field that hit off the glove of diving right fielder Brandon Short. However, Rivas was thrown out at the plate as he tried to score the tying run.

The Dash would add insurance with another unearned run in the eighth. With two out and runners on the corners, Justin Greene sent a soft flare behind second base. Rivas, with his back to the infield, reached over his shoulder but dropped the ball for his third error of the game, allowing Luis Sierra to score the final run of the game.

Winston-Salem’s starting pitcher, lefty Charlie Leesman (1-1) pitched five innings for the win, as he allowed one run on five hits, walked five and struck out none. Dan Remenowsky gave up a hit and a walk in the ninth but got out of the jam to earn his first save of the season.

Kinston (3-5) surrendered their first come-from-behind win of the season and has now lost three straight, while Winston-Salem (5-3) won their third in a row.

The K-Tribe continues the road trip in Winston-Salem Saturday night at 7 pm. Left-hander T.J. House will get the start on the mound for Kinston.

How awful to pitch 5 innings without giving up an earned run yet still taking the loss because of poor defense?

Is this just a fluke that the errors were made or does Kinston just not have a very good defense?

Yeah, Rivas totally killed White and the team last night. It happens, I guess. Rivas is supposed to be a good defender, but I have to say he is a guy I just have never been a fan of for whatever reason.
