Game Recaps: Goedert Leads Aeros To Win

Goedert, Putnam Help Aeros End Skid

The Akron Aeros stopped their four-game losing skid on Sunday afternoon at Canal Park in front of 2,712 fans. Russell Branyan made his second rehab start at first base where he went 1 for 4 with a run scored on the afternoon. Sunday’s win puts the Aeros at a 6-5 record before welcoming in the Altoona Curve into town for a three game series starting Monday night at Canal Park.

The Aeros jumped out to another early lead in the second inning when Jared Goedert connected with his first home run of the season. Goedert came to the plate with one man on when he took Zach Britton’s pitch deep into left-field putting the Aeros up 2-0. The Aeros would plate two more runs in the very next inning as Lonnie Chisenhall and Russell Branyan both singled to start the inning and Matt McBride grounded out to advance the runners to second and third. Goedert hit a line drive to right-field scoring both Chisenhall and Branyan putting the Aeros up 4-0.

Putnam worked six scoreless innings and allowed just five hits while striking out four Baysox. Putnam is now 2-0 on the year with an impressive 1.20 ERA through three starts for Akron, giving up a total of three runs in 15 innings. The Aeros bullpen had a solid outing giving up no runs and walking only two batters. Erik Stiller came into the game and pitched a total of 1.2 innings giving up no runs, walking one and striking out one. Aeros closer Neil Wagner came into the game and shut the door on Bowie pitching 1.1 innings, walking one and got Ryan Adams to pop up to John Drennen to end the game 4-0.

The Aeros will welcome to town the Altoona Curve for a three game set starting Monday night at 7:05 at Canal Park.

Clippers Sweep Doubleheader

The Clippers remained perfect on the season against Louisville, winning both halves of a Sunday double-header by 6-4 and 3-0 scores. The Clippers are now 5-0 against the Bats in 2010.

In game one of the twin-bill, The Clippers used a strong encore performance from Scott Lewis, who struck out 10 in his 1st outing of the season. Lewis pitched 6 innings, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits and earning his 2nd win of the year.

Carlos Santana drove in 3 runs and Wes Hodges plated a pair on the 1st Clippers triple of 2010. Jess Todd struck out 2 batters in the 7th inning to earn his 1st save of the year.

Columbus completed the sweep of the double-dip while scoring in only one inning in game 2. After Jose Constanza and Trevor Crowe reached base in the 3rd frame, Jason Donald and Carlos Santana drilled back-to-back doubles for a 3-0 lead that the Bats would not be able to overcome.

Josh Tomlin tossed 3 innings in a spot-start, Frank Herrmann authored 2 shutout innings of relief for the win and Saul Rivera earned his 2nd save of the year despite allowing 2 hits and bringing the tying run to the plate.

The finale of the 4-game series will take place Monday night with a 7:05 1st pitch. Carlos Carrasco makes his 3rd start of the year against Louisville's Sam LeCure.

Kinston Swept by Winston-Salem on Walk-Off Homer

A two-out, two-run walk-off home run by Winston-Salem’s Ozzie Lewis in the ninth inning capped a heartbreaking 7-6 loss for Kinston on Sunday afternoon in Winston-Salem. The K-Tribe (3-7) was swept for the first time this season and has now dropped five straight, while the Dash (7-3) won their fifth consecutive game.

The Tribe got it going early, as Karexon Sanchez walked and Abner Abreu doubled. Sanchez would score on a sacrifice fly by Jason Kipnis. Kinston then broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning, when Kipnis tripled to lead off the inning and Nate Recknagel drove him home with an RBI ground out.

The Dash would tie the score in the third inning with three hits off of K-Tribe starter Joey Mahalic. The Dash could have taken the lead in the third, but Kinston left fielder Donnie Webb made an unbelievable, over the shoulder, diving grab on the warning track earlier in the inning.

Mahalic would run into trouble in the fourth, When Winston-Salem started the inning with three straight hits including an RBI single from Drew Garcia, giving the Dash a 3-2 lead after four innings.

A K-Tribe rally started a wild seventh inning that saw the teams exchange leads. Abreu, Kipnis and Recknagel each singled to load the bases with nobody out against reliever Tyson Corley. Webb then grounded into a double play, scoring Abreu to tie the score. Kyle Bellows followed with an RBI double to deliver Kipnis and give the Indians a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Seth Loman hammered a two-out, two-run homer over the 25-foot wall in right-center field to give the Dash a 5-4 lead.

Kinston answered right back with two more in the eighth. With runners on second and third, Abreu hit an RBI ground out to second to score Richard Martinez. After a pitching change, Gregory Infante allowed a go-ahead RBI single to Kipnis that gave Kinston a 6-5 lead.

K-Tribe closer Steve Smith retired the first two batters in the ninth. He walked Loman, who was replaced by pinch-runner Kenny Williams, Jr. Then, on a 1-0 count, Lewis crushed Smith’s pitch over the left field wall for a walk-off home run.

Smith (0-1) took the loss after his first blow save, while Infante (1-0) earned the win after 1 and one-third scoreless innings.

The K-Tribe continues the road trip with four games in Wilmington, Delaware starting Monday at 6:35 pm. Kelvin De La Cruz is scheduled to make the start for Kinston on Monday night.

Captains Win On Tice Walkoff Single

Jeremie Tice singled home Bo Greenwell with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Lake County Captains defeated the Fort Wayne TinCaps 7-6 on Sunday. The Captains rally came after the first two batters were retired to start the inning.

The Captains started things off quickly when Greenwell hit a solo home run in the first inning, his second homer of the year. Roberto Perez followed with a single and two batters later Casey Frawley singed him home and the Captains led 2-0. After Captains starter Trey Haley walked the bases loaded in the top of the second inning, Dean Anna blasted a grand slam homer to give the TinCaps a 4-2 lead. The Captains tied it up in the bottom of the fifth inning when Greenwell singled home Greg Folgia and Argenis Martinez.

The TinCaps took a brief lead in the top of the eighth inning when Edinson Rincon hit a two run home run in the top of the eighth inning off of Francisco Jimenez to give the Caps a 6-4 lead. The Captains tied it up at 6-6 in the bottom of the eighth inning when Tice doubled home Roberto Perez and Kyle Smith was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Trey Haley did not get a decision pitching four innings allowing four runs on only one hit but walking five and striking out two. Jimenez (4-0) got the win working the final five innings and allowing the two runs on five hits while striking out four. TinCaps starter Nick Greenwood did not get a decision either working six innings and allowing four runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out two. Stiven Osuna (0-1) took the loss allowing three runs in 1.2 innings of work.

The Captains and TinCaps wrap up the three game series on Monday at 6:30 with the Captains sending RHP Joe Gardner (1-0, 2.00) to the mound against RHP Jerry Sullivan (1-0, 4.09).

Tony, any idea why Weglerz has not played the last 2 or 3 games?? Surprised you have not addressed that.....

Unsure, but I will talk to someone Monday morning about it.

That kid just oooozes talent...I would love to see him stay healthy.

Speaking of...anything new on poor Adam Miller? No pulling of the plug yet?

So how far is Jason Knapp from throwing again?

Knapp is throwing, just not in games yet. He should be back around June/July if all continues to go according to plan. He was throwing off flat ground in spring training.

As for Miller, check out Tony's awesome piece from when he interviewed him this spring in Goodyear, it should tell you everything you need to know: http://www.indiansprospectinsider.com/2010/03/goodyear-notebook-314.html

Yeah, what Al said. No timetable right now for Miller and Knapp is out to about 120 feet last I heard. Knapp should I think be back sometime in June if things go well, maybe late May at best.

Wegz had that stomach virus which is going around the Akron clubhouse. He is expected to play today.
