Game Recap 6/11: LaPorta Keeps Mashing

Clippers fall in series finale, 7-6

On the same day when the hype around Columbus was the call up of Carlos Santana to Cleveland, the Clippers made their fair share of noise at Huntington Park, but fell to the Rochester Red Wings, 7-6. Both teams used the long ball to their advantage, each hitting three home runs in the game.

After a 27 minute rain delay, Yancarlos Ortiz began his Triple-A career with a home run in the top of the first inning, a deep shot right field off of Columbus starter, Yohan Pino. Jordan Brown wasted no time in the bottom of the first, tying the game with his second home run of the season.

In the second inning, the third home run of the night was off the bat of Brock Peterson, his 10th of the year, a deep two-run shot to left field giving Rochester a 3-1 lead. Jared Goedert drove in his first run as a Clipper in the bottom of the second inning, a double to right-center driving in Chris Gimenez.

Matt LaPorta tied the game in the bottom of the third after hitting his fifth home run in three games against Rochester. LaPorta is now tied for second on the team with Wes Hodges in the home run department.

Jason Repko gave the Red Wings the lead in the top of the fifth, hitting his sixth home run of the season, a two run shot to left field. The Red Wings extended their lead in the inning after Martin drove in Brian Dinkelman on an RBI double. The Red Wings were able to chase Yohan Pino in the sixth inning after two consecutive hits to lead off the inning. Pino ended the night pitching five innings, giving up 11 hits and was tagged for seven earned runs. Ortiz was able to drive in his second run of the game against Joe Smith, driving in Macri, but Brown saved another run from scoring as he threw out Peterson at home to end the inning, but Columbus still trailed, 7-4.

Jared Goedert hit his first home run as a Clipper to bring Columbus within one, a two-run shot in the sixth making the score, 7-6, but that was all Columbus could muster up against Rochester, losing the series, three games to one.

Tomorrow, the Clippers begin a four game series with the Norfolk Tides at 7:05 p.m. Josh Tomlin (5-2, 2.89 ERA) will take the mound against Tide left-hander, Troy Patton (4-7, 5.13 ERA).

Aeros Tie Franchise Record with 4-3 Victory

The comeback kids did it again Friday night as the Aeros defeated the Portland Sea Dogs 4-3 in front of a rowdy crowd of 5,970 fans at Canal Park. Akron rallied late in scoring single runs in each of the final four innings to tie an all-time franchise record. The win was the 11th consecutive for the Aeros dating back to May 31st, tying a mark set by the Aeros in June of the 2002 season. Catcher Damaso Espino delivered the game-winning single in the eighth and ended the contest with a caught stealing in the ninth. The Aeros (31-30) remain in a tie for second place in the Western Division of the Eastern League while the loss was just the fourth in 12 games for the Sea Dogs (32-28).

Portland jumped out early on Akron left-handed starter Kelvin De La Cruz in the very first inning. Three walks and a fielding error made it 1-0 and first baseman Anthony Rizzo plated the second run of the frame with a sacrifice fly to center. Left fielder Chih-Hsien Chiang followed with a run-scoring single to give the Sea Dogs the quick three-run edge.

The Aeros began their rally by finally manufacturing a run against Portland’s highly touted starting pitcher Casey Kelly. Akron right fielder Jerad Head began the fourth with a double to left-center and back-to-back groundouts made it a 3-1 game.

A controversial call by umpire crew chief Adam Hamari then highlighted a crazy sixth inning where the Aeros continued to build momentum against the Sea Dogs. Rizzo started the frame with a towering fly ball to the tall wall in center, believed it was a home run but told otherwise by Hamari who promptly excused him from the game. Teammate Che-Hsuan Lin was also ejected as Portland took the field in the bottom of the sixth and a solo homer by Akron’s Lonnie Chisenhall brought the margin to just one run.

Center fielder Adam Davis and Espino then led off the bottom of the seventh with singles and Tim Fedroff followed immediately with a clutch RBI double to tie the game. With one out in the eighth, Head singled and Davis drew a walk to start the game-winning attack. Espino then lined a 0-2 pitch from Portland’s Bryce Cox into right field, scoring Head and providing the final run of the night in order to tie the all-time record.

Reliever Carlton Smith (1-1) earned the victory with a shutout eighth inning for the Aeros while Anthony Hollovy (3-2) took the loss for the visiting Sea Dogs. Bryce Stowell picked up his fourth save as Espino’s caught stealing negated the only base runner he allowed.

Espino finished the night 2-4 at the plate with a pair of RBI and threw out two Portland runners attempting to steal second base. Fedroff, Head and Matt McBride all collected two hits as the hosts actually out-hit Portland 12-5 on the night. Chisenhall’s solo home run was his fifth in just 13 contests since returning from the disabled list on May 28th.

Akron will look to break the franchise record as this weeklong home stand continues Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Sea Dogs. It is a Super Saver Saturday at Canal Park where tickets are just $7, hot dogs, popcorn, soft drinks and draft beer are available for just $1 and all fans can take advantage of a 10% discount at Infield Outfitters. Aeros lefty Nick Hagadone (1-0, 3.00 ERA) matches up against Portland starter Ryne Miller (2-3, 4.96 ERA) in game two of this three-game series.

Myrtle Beach Beats Kinston 6-0

Three K-Tribe errors led to three unearned runs, as Myrtle Beach beat Kinston 6-0 Friday night at Historic Grainger Stadium.

The Pelicans started the scoring in the third inning off of K-Tribe starter Joey Mahalic. Mycal Jones led off with a double to left and moved to third on a grounder by Travis Jones. Then, Mike Jones capped the attack of the Jones Trio with a sacrifice fly to left to score Mycal and make it 1-0 Pelicans.

In the fourth, the Pelicans' Jesus Sucre belted a towering solo home run to left to extend the lead to 2-0. Things got sloppy for the K-Tribe defense in the fifth. Cole Miles reached on a leadoff single and Mycal Jones sent a fly ball to center field. Jordan Henry got a poor jump on the ball and had it hit off of his glove as he reached back to make the catch. After the ball dropped in for an error, Miles scored and Ronald Rivas made a wild throw to home plate for the second error on the play, which allowed Jones to come all the way in and score the fourth run for Myrtle Beach. Mahalic (1-1) surrendered five runs, two earned, in five innings for the loss. He gave up six hits, walked three and struck out five.

Myrtle Beach added a fifth run on a bases loaded walk to Cole Miles in the seventh inning. The run was charged to Brian Grening, who walked four in one inning of work. Rob Bryson then came in from the pen, walking two and striking out five in two innings of work. David Roberts finished the game for Kinston, throwing a perfect ninth. Pelicans starter Matt Crim (4-4) pitched eight scoreless innings for the win. He allowed only five hits, walked two and struck out a season-high nine. Karexon Sanchez was the only K-Tribe batter with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 on the night.

The K-Tribe returns to Historic Grainger Stadium for game three of the four game series Saturday night at 7pm. T.J. House will take the hill for Kinston. The two teams will end the series and homestand on Sunday at 2pm.

Captains Tame Cougars with 4-3 Win

Lake County saw a four run lead cut down to one, in the ninth inning. Chun Chen stood his ground at home plate as the tying run was cut trying to score. The Captains hung on to escape with a 4-3 win on Friday night. The win by the Captains pushed the lead in the Eastern Division to 2.0 games over the Great Loons who lost to Peoria.

Delvi Cid led the first inning off with an infield single, hitting safely in ten straight games. Chun Chen delivered another clutch two-out base hit scoring Cid and the Captains went up, 1-0.

In the second inning, Jason Smit leading off crushed a solo homerun to left center, his fourth of the year. Lake County added one more after Ben Carlson reached on error, would later score on a two-out RBI single by Cid.

Cid started the fifth inning off with his third hit of the game, and came around and scored on a Jeremie Tice sacrifice fly to leftfield his 41st RBI of the year and the Captains led 4-0.

Drama occurred in the ninth inning, Anthony Aliotee singled off Preston Guilmet to start things off. Rashon Dixon drew a walk and Kent Walton singled to load the bases. Mike Gilmartin represented the tying run and singled to cut the lead in half. The next hitter Myrio Richard doubled down the leftfield line scoring Walton, but Gilmartin was thrown out at home trying to score from first. Guilmet would get Juan Nunez to pop to first for the final out and the Captains won 4-3.

Clayton Cook (2-4) picked up his second win of the year for Lake County, tossing five innings of two hit ball not surrendering a run, striking out six. Rob Gilliam (3-5) suffered the loss allowing four runs, three of them earned on eight hits in six innings striking out six. Jose Flores pitched three innings scoreless innings in relief allowing just one base hit and struck out three.

The Captains (40-21) and Cougars (28-34) will resume the weekend series on Saturday night at 7:00PM EST from Elfstrom Stadium. Lake County starts RHP Brett Brach (0-2) against Dan Straily (4-3) for Kane County.
