The Indians today announced they have recalled right-handed reliever Joe Smith from Triple-A Columbus. Smith assumes the roster spot on the 25-man roster of left-handed starter David Huff who was optioned to Columbus yesterday.
This will mark Smith’s second stint with the Indians this year after making the opening day roster. He was optioned to Columbus on April 30 and went 2-1 with 2 saves and a 1.96 ERA (23.0 IP, 17 H, 8R/5ER, 10 BB, 19 K) in 20 appearances with the Clippers. Smith allowed just 1 ER over his last 12 appearances (13.2 IP, 8 H, 3R/1ER, 6 BB, 10 K) with Columbus since May 20th. Earlier this year with Cleveland he went 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA (7.0 IP, 7 H, 6R/ER, 6 BB, 5 K) in 9 games.
This is only a temporary move as Smith or one of the other relievers will be sent to Columbus in three or four days once Huff's spot in the rotation comes up again. Left-hander Aaron Laffey and right-hander Carlos Carrasco will be considered for the spot.
