Frawley Walkoff Homer Clinches First Half Crown For Captains
Casey Frawley led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a walk off home run as the Lake County Captains clinched the Midwest League Eastern crown defeating the Lansing Lugnuts 3-2 on Sunday. The Captains win the 1st half championship in their inaugural season in the Midwest League.
The Captains jumped on the Lugnuts scoring twice in the first inning when Jeremie Tice singled home Delvi Cid and Bo Greenwell to give the Captains a 2-0 lead. The Lugnuts tied the game in the top of the second inning when Justin Jackson singled home a run and Chris Hopkins followed with a RBI single.
Captains starter Vidal Nuno did not get a decision pitching 5.1innings allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out four. Nick Sarianides threw two scoreless innings allowing one hit, walking two and striking out two. Tyler Sturdevant (3-0) got the win pitching 1.2 scoreless innings allowing a hit and striking out two.
Lugnuts starter Matt Fields did not get a decision working six innings allowing two runs on three hits, walking one and striking out three. Brian Stover (2-3) took the loss.
Roberto Perez, Bo Greenwell, Chun Chen and Nick Sarianides will represent the Captains in the Midwest League All Star game on Tuesday June 22 in Fort Wayne. The Captains will begin second half play on Friday June 25 at West Michigan at 7:00 PM.
Clippers, PawSox suspended by rain
Weather almost cost the Clippers a chance at victory Sunday, but they scored a pair of runs just in time to force a suspension of the final game in their four-game set at Pawtucket.
Columbus holds a 4-3 lead, thanks to two runs in the top of the sixth inning (scored courtesy of a ground out and a bases-loaded walk). The game will be resumed when the PawSox visit Huntington Park in late July.
Had the Clippers not tied the game or taken a lead, they would've simply been dealt a rain-shortened loss, as heavy showers hit one at-bat after Columbus pulled ahead. They'll have the bases-loaded with two outs in the top of the sixth when play resumes.
Josh Rodriguez' two-run homer in the third put the Clippers ahead early, but the PawSox answered with single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings against Carlos Carrasco to take the lead.
So the Clippers remain at 41-29 on the season as they head to Rochester for a four-game series starting at 7:05 Monday night.
Head Homers Twice in Akron’s 3-2 Victory
Aeros designated hitter Jerad Head delivered a pair of home runs Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field in helping Akron avoid a three-game sweep against the Portland Sea Dogs with a 3-2 win. His solo one-out homers in the sixth and eighth innings helped the visitors break an early tie while the back-and-forth relieving corps secured the advantage in the final innings. The win was just the second in the past eight days for the Aeros (34-35) as they finished off their two week home-and-road series against the Sea Dogs (36-32) and the New Hampshire Fisher Cats with a 7-5 record.
Portland’s Kyle Weiland was perfect through three innings while his Akron counterpart Scott Barnes only surrendered two walks and a single in the early pitcher’s duel. The Aeros then pounced for a run in the fourth as Lonnie Chisenhall and John Drennen each drew walks and hot-hitting Tim Fedroff collected a two-out RBI single.
The Sea Dogs tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth by playing a small ball style of offense. Juan Apodaca hit a leadoff single, Ohio native Will Vazquez walked while a sacrifice bunt and a Nate Spears sacrifice fly eventually scored Apodaca. Portland replaced Weiland with Ryne Miller in the next half inning and after striking out Drennen, he permitted the first solo shot to center field from Head.
The 2-1 advantage stayed until the eighth inning where Head was again the second batter that reliever Mitch Herold faced, and he promptly drilled a 3-1 offering into the left field bleachers. The final few frames would get dramatic as the Sea Dogs added in one final run in the bottom half of that eighth on a run-scoring single by Ryan Khoury. Akron collected three hits in the top of the ninth but failed to score while closer Bryce Stowell then stranded a runner on second base with two straight strikeouts to end the game.
Barnes (3-6) was solid in earning the win, striking out eight Portland batters and allowing just one run on two hits and five walks in five innings pitched. Miller-5) took the loss by allowing the crucial second run of the ball game and the Akron bullpen was tremendous for the first time all week. Connor Graham avoided trouble in two frames while Wright allowed the final run in the eighth and new closer Stowell recorded his sixth save.
Head’s home runs were his third and fourth of the season in 22 games played for Akron and it was his first multi-homer performance since July 14, 2006 with the short-season Class A Burlington Indians. Chisenhall smacked three hits including a double while Jason Kipnis extended his hitting streak to all eight of his Double-A games with two singles.
The Aeros will be travelling by bus overnight Sunday on their return back to the state of Ohio and will enjoy a much-deserved rest day Monday. The team then returns to action Tuesday night for the start of a weeklong home stand with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch time at Canal Park against the Richmond Flying Squirrels. Aeros lefty Eric Berger (3-4, 5.25 ERA) matches up in the series opener against Richmond’s Mike MacDonald (1-6, 4.96 ERA).
K-Tribe Beats Salem 4-1 to End First Half
The K-Tribe ended the first half in style, beating Salem 4-1 Sunday afternoon in Virginia.
Kinston starter Joe Gardner (6-1) was fantastic, giving up just two hits (to the first two batters he faced) and no runs. Gardner struck out a season high nine hitters and walked just one batter. Gardner picked up his sixth win of the season.
The K-Tribe got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning, when Lucas Montero led off with a single and Abner Abreu hit him home with an RBI double. Doug Pickens follwed with an RBI single to bring home Abreu and give Kinston a 2-0 lead. Salem starting pitcher Stolmy Pimentel lasted six innings giving up six hits and two earned runs.
With Gardner out of the game, Salem got their first run of the game off of Kinston reliever Chris Jones. After a single and two walks, Ryan Dent drove home Will Middlebrooks on an RBI ground out. Jones would settle down from there, striking out three straight batters and making way for Kinston Closer Cory Burns with two-outs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Burnes got out of the inning with a ground out. Burns got some insurance in the top of the ninth inning, when Ronald Rivas hit a two-run home run over the left field wall, his second homer of the season. Burns gave up a hit, but that was it in the ninth inning to pick up his tenth save of the season.
The K-Tribe finishes up the first half third place in the Southern Division with a record of 36-34. After the three day All-Star Break, the K-Tribe starts the second half at home. Don’t miss the six game homestand Thursday, June 24th – Tuesday, June 29th at Historic Grainger Stadium.
