The Lake County Captains overcame an early two run deficit to continue their quest for an Eastern Division Championship defeating the Lansing Lugnuts 6-2 on Saturday. The Captains have already clinched a play off spot but have a chance to win the Division on Sunday depending on the outcome of the Great Lakes at Dayton game.
The Lugnuts scored a pair of runs in the top of the second inning when A.J. Jimenez doubled and scored on a double from Sean Ochinko. Ochinko scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Schrimpf and it was 2-0. The Captains came right back in the bottom of the frame when Kyle Smith singled home Jeremie Tice and Jason Smit hit a sacrifice fly to score Roberto Perez to tie the game at 2-2. The Captains scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning when Kyle Smith scored on a wild pitch and Smit scored on a sacrifice fly from Delvi Cid and the Captains led 4-2. Chun Chen blasted his sixth home run of the year in the bottom of the fifth inning, a two run shot, to up the Captains lead to 6-2.
Captains starter Matt Packer (5-3) got the win pitching 5.1 innings allowing two runs on six hits, walking two and striking out seven. Francisco Jimenez followed and threw 3.2 scoreless innings allowing two hits, walking one and striking out a season high eight batters to collect his first save of the year.
Lugnuts starter Ryan Shopshire (4-6) took the loss working seven innings allowing six runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out two.
The Captains and Lugnuts end first half play with a Sunday game at 1:00 PM. The Captains will have RHP Vidal Nuno (2-1, 6.62) on the hill to face RHP Matt Fields (1-2, 3.92).
Clippers blow lead, lose 7-6
The Pawtucket Red Sox rallied to take game three of a four game set with the Columbus Clippers on Saturday night at McCoy Stadium, 7-6. The Clippers were finally able to score runs against the Red Sox, but so did Pawtucket, as Columbus and Pawtucket only scored four runs in the first two meetings.
The Clippers tallied 13 hits on the evening as Cord Phelps was the only one that failed to get in on the hitting parade. Brown, LaPorta, Jared Goedert and Chris Gimenez all had multi-hit games, but it was not enough for Columbus in the losing effort.
Michael Brantley led off the third inning with his second home run of the season to right field off of starter Adam Mills. The Clippers tagged Mills for the second run of the inning when Matt LaPorta drove in Jordan Brown who doubled. LaPorta's RBI single was his 11th of the year.
The Red Sox cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third inning when Ryan Shealy reached first base on a ball hit to third base, scoring Niuman Romero from third base.
The Clippers chased Mills in the top of the sixth inning, as Columbus scored four runs in the frame, led by Wes Hodges hitting his sixth long ball of the season. Following Hodges was Jose Constanza's RBI single and a two-run single by Brian Bixler.
The Red Sox rallied in the bottom of the eighth against Jeremy Sowers with 6 runs to take the lead, as Pawtucket loaded the bases with no one out. Gil Velazquez singled home the first fun of the inning, driving in Aaron Bates and was followed by Bubba Bell, who had a bases clearing double to left field. Jeremy Sowers left after just a third of an inning, giving up six earned runs on four hits and walked two. The Red Sox took the lead for good as Angel Sanchez and Shealy delivered the game-tying and go-ahead hits off of Jess Todd.
The Clippers conclude their series with the Red Sox on Sunday afternoon with a 1:05 p.m. first pitch. After Pawtucket, Columbus travels to Rochester for a four game series with the Red Wings before returning home to Huntington Park.
Aeros Lose Third Straight to Portland 11-5
The Aeros pitching staff struggled again Saturday night at Hadlock Field in Portland, as Akron lost by the final score of 11-5 against the Sea Dogs. Portland has now won each of the last three meetings between these two teams as their offense smacked nine extra-base hits on the night. Three defensive errors also hurt the Akron (33-35) cause and the Sea Dogs improved to 36-31 in 2010.
Second baseman Jason Kipnis extended his hitting streak to seven games with an RBI double in the top of the first as the Aeros took an early lead. Lonnie Chisenhall followed with another two-bagger to bring the edge to 2-0 and two batters later, John Drennen gave the visitors an intimidating three-run advantage with a sacrifice fly.
Portland would begin their offensive attack with single runs in the first and second innings before a monster rally in the third. Highly touted Akron starter Alex White permitted a single, double, triple and homer in the frame while an error by shortstop Carlos Rivero also helped the Sea Dogs take a 6-3 lead.
Center fielder Jordan Henry scored Tim Fedroff on a groundout in the fifth but Aeros reliever Bryan Price struggled shortly after replacing White. Nate Spears collected an RBI single and Che-Hsuan Lin made it 8-4 with the second Portland sac fly of the night.
Akron scored their final run of the game on a shortstop Carlos Rivero home run to lead off the seventh. Unfortunately, the Sea Dogs responded yet again as a Chisenhall error scored another runner that inning. Luis Exposito then homered in the eighth and Yamaico Navarro had a run-scoring single to provide for the final margin.
White (2-3) took his second loss against Portland in the past seven days while Stephen Fife (4-1) earned the win despite allowing five runs (four earned) in seven innings. The struggles for the Aeros bullpen continued as Price, Shane Lindsay and Chen-Chang Lee combined to permit seven hits and five runs (three earned) in the last four frames.
Kipnis had a pair of doubles on the night while Rivero also finished with two hits and his second homer of the season. Akron also grounded into three double plays while Portland collected 15 hits along with their five doubles and three home runs.
The Portland Sea Dogs look for the three-game series sweep and a fourth straight win over Akron Sunday afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch at Hadlock Field. Aeros left-handed starter Scott Barnes (2-6, 6.18 ERA) will face off in the series finale against Kyle Weiland (3-4, 4.00 ERA) of the Sea Dogs.
Salem Slaps K-Tribe 12-0
Salem took a big, early lead and never let go as the Sox took down the K-Tribe 12-0 Saturday night in Virginia. The 12 runs and 18 hits put up by Salem, were the most giving up by Kinston in a single game this season.
Salem got all over Kinston starter Marty Popham (1-2) early, scoring four runs on five hits in both the first and second innings. With Salem up 8-0, Popham was chased from the game after two innings. All of the runs were earned as Popham gave up ten hits, while walking one and not striking out a batter.
Salem starter Caleb Clay (3-4) was wild but effective, giving up five walks, through four scoreless innings. The K-Tribe managed just three hits on the evening, two of them by Abner Abreu.
The K-Tribe (35-34) will end the first half at Salem on Sunday afternoon with a 4:05pm start. Joe Gardner will take the mound for the Indians. The Kinston Indians will have Monday through Wednesday off for the All-Star Break and then return to Historic Grainger Stadium for a six game homestand June 24th - 29th.
Scrappers Lose 4-0
The Mahoning Valley Scrappers dropped game two of the three game set against the Jamestown Jammers 4-0 Saturday at Russel Diethrick Park.
The Jammers scored three runs off of losing pitcher Kirk Wetmore, one coming in the second inning on an RBI single by James Wooster and two coming in the third on a two-RBI single off the bat of Aaron Senne. Jammers starter Josh Hodges pitched six scoreless innings and picked up the win.
The Scrappers and the Jammers will conclude their three game series tomorrow. First pitch is at 6:05 p.m.
