Phelps To Columbus, Kipnis To Akron

In the wake of all the draft stuff going on, the Indians made a very noteworthy roster move in their minor league system in the past 24 hours. I actually noted these moves as soon as they happened on my Twitter page (@tlastoria), but had not listed them on the site until now.

Anyway, the Indians have promoted second baseman Cord Phelps to Triple-A Columbus and to fill his spot in Akron they have also promoted second baseman Jason Kipnis to Double-A Akron. To word on a move at High-A Kinston to fill in for Kipnis, but I have to wonder if it will be infielder Casey Frawley from Low-A Lake County who gets the promotion (this is speculation on my part).

Kipnis was selected in the 2nd round of the 2009 Draft out of Arizona State and made his professional debut last August, appearing in 29 games for short-season Class A Mahoning Valley. In 54 games with Kinston he hit .300 with 6 HR, 31 RBI and a .865 OPS.

Phelps batted .296 with 2 HR, 23 RBI, and a .743 OPS in 53 games with Akron. He is a 23-year-old Stanford product and was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 3rd round of the 2008 Draft.

Will we see either catcher from lake county or Bo Greenwell in Kinston later this year?

Frawley probably does deserve the promotion.

Now that the 1st & 2nd rounders from last year got the promotion.... What does that mean for the 3rd rounder? The big righthander from UC Santa Barbara Joe Gardner? He seems to be pitching very well!

I believe Perez will be up in Kinston shortly. His defense is unreal. Offense is coming. Chen needs more work behind the plate, so moving Perez to Kinston would allow that.

Greenwell I think will be up sometime in the second half, likely when Henry is promoted. Problem is there is the outfield situation is loaded in AAA/AA so movement will be slower.

As for Gardner, I think he will spend a good portion the rest of the year in Akron, especially when you look at the loaded staff in Akron right now where it will be hard to crack the rotation there. My guess is if he does get a call, it will be mid-August if at all.
