Game Recap 6/14: Carrasco's Strong Outing Not Enough

Tides claim victory over Clippers, 6-3

The Norfolk Tides claimed victory over the Columbus Clippers, 6-3 on Monday night at Huntington Park in front of just over 9,000 fans.

The Clippers were unable to execute the fundamentals late in the ball game, failing to move runners over on bunt attempts as well as a few fielding issues in the ninth. Columbus compiled nine hits, five of which were extra base hits, four doubles and a home run, but they went 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.

The Clippers trailed in the previous two games against Norfolk in the early innings but were able to jump out in front in the first inning. Michael Brantley led off the game for Columbus with a double then was driven home by Nick Weglarz, his eighth RBI of the year.

The second inning saw a home run from each team as Norfolk third baseman, Josh Bell tied the game with his seventh home run of the season with a deep shot to right field. Jared Goedert answered by hitting his second home run with Columbus in the bottom of the inning, giving the Clippers a 2-1 advantage.

Bell struck again in the top of the fourth inning, driving in Michael Aubrey on a double to left. Nolan Reimold gave the Tides the lead later after he drove in Bell on an RBI single to center. The Tides continued to get to Clippers' starter, Carlos Carrasco in the top of the fifth as Robert Andino extended the Tide lead after driving in Michel Hernandez on a two-out single to left field. Carrasco finished the night pitching seven innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and striking out eight in the loss.

The Clippers had the bases loaded in the seventh inning with only one out but were only able to push across one run as Weglarz reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Cord Phelps, but Matt LaPorta grounded out to third to end the threat. With the Clippers failing to convert, Andino gave the Tides some insurance in the top of the ninth off of reliever, Joe Smith, driving in two runs on a single over the head of Goedert at third.

The Clippers conclude their eight-game home stand tomorrow against the Tides at 12:05 p.m. Jeanmar Gomez (3-7, 6.96 ERA) will start for Columbus against Norfolk's, Tim Bascom (0-1, 3.86 ERA).
