Akron had a regularly scheduled off day on Monday.

Clippers fall to Rochester 4-2

The Clippers lost 4-2 in the opening game of a series against the Rochester Red Wings.

The Clippers had no problem getting the lead-off batter on base, doing it seven times in nine innings. However, Columbus hit into five double plays, including one that killed a ninth inning rally.

Jason Jones started for the Red Wings and pitched six and one third scoreless innings. He allowed seven hits, walked one and struck out one. The Red Wings scored in the second when Brock Peterson hit a two-out RBI single. Jason Pridie doubled in the fifth to score Peterson and make it 2-0 Rochester.

Clippers starter Kirk Saarloos also gave up a two-out two run homer to Matt Macri in the sixth. Saarloos allowed four runs over six innings. He struck out one and walked two, allowing seven hits.

A record crowd of 12,223 fans were hoping that Columbus could put together a late inning rally. Matt LaPorta gave them hope with an RBI single in the eighth, but a pair of Red Wings pitchers struck out the side to end the threat. Rob Mackowiak led off the ninth with a double and Wyatt Toregas followed with a single, putting runners on the corners with no outs. Andy Cannizaro hit into the fifth double play of the night. Mackowiak scored on the double play, but Michael Brantley flied out to end the game.

The Clippers have lost four of five in this current home stand. The series continues Tuesday at 7:05 pm. Lefty Chuck Lofgren (1-2, 3.71) gets the start for Columbus. Right-hander Kevin Mulvey (3-3, 3.61) will take the mound for Rochester.

Kinston loses 8-1

It was another big inning that did the K-Tribe in for the Indians’ fourth straight loss, as Salem put six runs on the board in the sixth inning to carry them to a 8-1 victory.

The Red Sox sent ten batters to the plate in the six-run sixth, the third time in four games Kinston has allowed 10-plus batters to the plate in a frame. Kinston’s Eric Berger (4-5) kept the K-Tribe in the game up until the sixth, pitching five solid frames and giving up just two runs, one earned on five hits, two walks and six strikeouts. Kinston relievers Heath Taylor and Chen-Chang Lee combined to give up the six runs in the sixth, though just three of them were earned as the big blow in the inning was a throwing error by shortstop Ronald Rivas.

Kinston’s lone run came in the top of the sixth inning, as Cord Phelps knocked in Lucas Montero on an RBI groundout after Montero’s fifth triple of the season. The Indians managed just five hits all game, as Salem starter Casey Kelly (1-2) pitched great in just his fourth start in High A. The 19-year-old Kelly went six innings, allowed just one run, four hits and had five strikeouts.

With the loss, the K-Tribe is now mathematically eliminated from finishing in first place in the first half, as they fall to a season low 12 games below .500 and eight games back of Winston-Salem with just six remaining in the first half of play. The K-Tribe and Red Sox will battle it out again tomorrow night as Kinston sends Russell Young (0-3, 6.37) to the hill for game two of the three game set at 7:05 ET.

Captains Win 3-1

A three run second inning was all the Lake County Captains needed as they defeated the Hagerstown Suns 3-1 on Monday. The win snapped a three games Captains losing streak.

The Captains took the lead in bottom of the second inning when Adam Abraham doubled and scored on a double by Abner Abreu. A wild pitch moved Abreu to third and he scored on a John Allman single. Chris Nash scored two batters later when Jose Camargo singled him home to make it 3-0. It was Camargo’s first RBI of the year. The Suns got a run back in the top of the third inning when Robbie Jacobsen singled and scored on a double by Nick Arata and it was 3-1.

Captains’ starter Alexander Perez (5-2) got the win going six innings and allowing one run on four hits, walking one and striking out eight. T.J. McFarland pitched three scoreless innings in relief of Perez to pick up his first career save. Suns starter Brad Peacock (1-6) took the loss pitching six innings and allowing three runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out four.

The Captains and Suns conclude the series and home stand on Tuesday at 7:00PM with the Captains sending RHP Trey Haley (1-3, 6.20) to the mound against the Suns RHP Paul Demny (1-5, 4.41).
