Clippers drop 5-4 decision to Gwinnett

The Clippers fell to the Gwinnett Braves for the first time in the team's brief history in suburban Atlanta by a 5-4 score.

Matt LaPorta drove in Michael Brantley in the first give Columbus an early 1-0 lead. Zack Jackson took the mound, having given up two earned runs or less in every start this season, but he allowed three runs in the first inning to the Braves. Brain Barton's RBI triple capped the scoring in the opening frame, but the Braves weren't done.

Gwinnett tallied a single run in the second and another in the fifth, on both occasions, the runner who scored reached base on a walk. Mike Gosling allowed the final run, but pitched well in his Clippers debut, going three innings, allowing three hits, one walk and a pair of strikeouts.

Rich Rundles and John Meloan each pitched a scoreless inning for Columbus and gave the offense an opportunity to come from behind. The bats chipped away with runs in the fourth, sixth and eighth innings to make it 5-4. The Clippers had the tying run at second in the ninth with one out, but could not produce the big hit against Rafael Cruz, who shut the door for his first save of the season.

The Clippers are 3-3 on the trip through Charlotte and Gwinnett. The series finale starts at 2:05pm Tuesday at Gwinnett Stadium. Jo Jo Reyes will make a rehab start for Braves against the Clippers Kenny Ray.

Captains Lose a Tough One 8-7

The lead changed hands several times before the Delmarva Shorebirds put the Lake County Captains away 8-7 on Monday. The Captains are now 8-11 in one run games.

The Shorebirds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a solo home run by Tyler Kolodny. Ron Welty singled home Xavier Avery in the top of third inning and then scored on a double by Joe Mahoney to give the Shorebirds a 3-0 lead. The Captains tied it at 3-3 in the bottom of the third inning when Delvi Cid scored on a wild pitch and Abner Abreu singled home Donnie Webb and Karexon Sanchez.

The Captains took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Donnie Webb knocked home Walter Diaz to make it 4-3. The Shorebirds came storming back in the top of the fifth inning scoring three times on a RBI single by Welty and a two RBI double by Mahoney and it was 6-4. The Captains tied it back up at 6-6 when Walter Diaz doubled home two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Captains regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning when Diaz scored on a passed ball to make it 7-6. The Shorebirds took the lead back in the bottom of the eighth inning when Xavier Avery walked with the bases loaded and Greg Miclat singled in a run and it was 8-7.

Captains’ starter Danny Salazar did not get a decision going five innings and allowing six runs on ten hits and striking out one. Anillins Martinez (1-2) took the loss allowing two runs in .1 innings of work. Eddie Gamboa (5-0) got the win.

The Captains and Shorebirds play game two of the series on Tuesday at 7:00 PM. The Captains will send RHP Alexander Perez (4-2, 3.02) to the mound to face the Shorebirds LHP Cole McCurry (3-4, 3.20).
