Two Day Draft Recap

It has been a busy past 24+ hours for the Indians, as they have added 30 new players into their Indians family and still have to add 20 more today with rounds 31-50. With all the new players picked, for most their time as an Indian will be short as more than half will not sign by the August 15th signing date and enter the draft again next year looking to improve their slot.

For information on the picks made so far, check out the individual posts for each pick made so far on each player. Big ups to Jeff Ellis for writing capsules for just about every player. Also, thanks to Andrew Zajac and Dennis Nosco for their input and massive help so far.

A quick FYI, the process will be streamlined a little more for the Day 3 picks since we are getting into the depths of the draft from 31-50. Instead of an individual thread for each pick we will likely have two running posts, one for 31-40 and one for 41-50, which will rundown the picks and give basic info as well as any capsule information if available.

We will also have some of the picks on our Smoke Signals radio show over the coming weeks, and for Thursday June 11th from 9:30-10:30pm EST we have 3rd rounder Joe Gardner set to come on at about 10:00pm EST. Another draft pick or two may appear on the show as well. To listen to the show, go here:

With that, here is a quick recap of the picks and where we stand through the first 30 picks, courtesy of the Indians.

- Each of the Indians first 23 selections were from a college or university

- The Indians did not select a high school player until their 24th pick (RHP Michael Hamann)

- 28 of the Indians first 30 picks were from a college or university.

- Of the Indians first 30 selections, 20 have been pitchers.

Tony, I know this might be a painful request, but do you have the number of players the Indians have signed from each draft since Shapiro took over as the GM? I was just wondering what the average number of players we've signed each season. What's the typical number of players drafted that actually do sign with the ML squad?

I'm sure this differs based on high school players / college players, as well.

2002: 26 (5 HS)
2003: 23 (5 HS)
2004: 27 (3 HS)
2005: 21 (3 HS)
2006: 37 (6 HS) (year of GCL add, 7 affiliates)
2007: 26 (5 HS)
2008: 29 (4 HS)

Wow, thanks for the quick response! So it looks as if we'll sign around half of these players if we stick to the formula. Seeing that we haven't drafted but two high school guys, hopefully we pick it up today and get a couple late round steals.

Either way, I'm guessing we'll be seeing a lot of these guys at Mahoning Valley really soon.
