Game Recaps: Wednesday 6/10

The Columbus Clippers had a scheduled day off today.

Aeros rout Fisher Cats

The Aeros dominated New Hampshire throughout the night Wednesday, romping to a 12-0 win in front of 4,110 fans at Canal Park. Nick Weglarz tied a franchise-record by smacking a pair of triples en route to a season-high five RBI, and it was Akron’s most lop-sided win since a 14-0 blowout at Harrisburg May 21st of 2006. The Aeros improved to 38-20 on the year, while the Fisher Cats fell to 27-33.

The scoring began for Akron in the very first inning, as the oddest of events propelled the Aeros to a quick four-run cushion. Jose Constanza began the game with a walk, Cristo Arnal was hit by a pitch, and a fielder’s choice loaded the bases with no one out. New Hampshire first baseman David Cooper then committed back-to-back fielding errors that led to three runs, and a sacrifice fly from Jerad Head plated Carlos Santana and ended the inning with four runs and no hits against Fisher Cats starter Randy Boone. The no-hitter would not stand for very long however, as the Aeros would pounce on Boone again in the fourth.

After retiring eight straight batters between the first through third innings, Boone allowed back-to-back singles to Jerad Head and John Drennen to begin the fourth. Jose Constanza’s one-out single loaded the bases, and Weglarz unloaded them with a two-out triple to left that Cody Haerther got a glove on but could not corral as the Aeros pushed it to a 7-0 advantage.

Akron registered yet another monster inning in the fifth against Fisher Cats reliever Nathan Starner. The rally began with a lead-off double by Beau Mills down the right field line, and Head plated him with a single to left. A double and a walk loaded the bases, and Constanza made it 9-0 with an RBI single to right. Arnal pushed it to 10-0 with a sac fly, and a two-run triple from Weglarz, again with two out, provided the final margin.

Starter Jeanmar Gomez (5-2) blasted out of a recent funk with a stellar six-inning performance, marking his fourth quality start of the season and his first since his perfect game May 21st at Trenton. The 21-year-old Venezuelan delivered six shutout innings allowing only a single and a walk while striking out five. Akron relievers Matt Meyer, Brian Grening and Erik Stiller completed the one-hit gem, as on the night the Fisher Cats managed only five base runners. Boone (4-4) took the loss for the Fisher Cats, as the visitors from New Hampshire lost their 16th game in their past 21 contests.

Weglarz’s historic performance was not the only story offensively for the Aeros in this blowout. Constanza, Mills, Head and Drennen also had two-hit outings as the quintet combined for all 10 of the Akron hits on the night. With his five RBI masterpiece, Weglarz moved only one back of Carlos Santana for the team-lead with 39 on the year, while first baseman Mills registered his team-high 18th multi-hit outing and stole his third career base in his 243rd career game.

K-Tribe win

Kinston’s Eric Berger tossed 6 1/3 quality innings, allowing just one run on two hits to earn his fourth win of the season and the second straight victory for the K-Tribe, defeating Myrtle Beach 4-1 tonight from BB&T Coastal Field.

Berger (4-4) gave up the lone run in the first on two Pelican hits, but then held Myrtle Beach hitless for the next 5 1/3 innings. Kinston relievers Travis Turek and Dallas Cawiezell held serve from the K-Tribe bullpen, allowing just two hits in 2.2 innings of work. Cawiezell picked up the two-inning save, his team leading seventh of the season.

Kinston’s bats were held at bay through the first six innings as Pelicans starter Jose Oregano pitched six strong, allowing no runs on just three hits, while striking out six. Oregano couldn’t figure in the decision, however, after his bullpen gave up the lead for him in the seventh.
Alex Castillo (1-for-4) hit a one-out double in the seventh off reliever Michael Broadway (0-5), and then Lucas Montero (1-for-4) drove him in with an RBI single. Montero then stole second and scored on a two-out Tim Fedroff (2-for-5) RBI single.

Lonnie Chisenhall (0-for-3) saw his eight-game hit streak come to a halt, but he did reach base twice via the hit-by-pitch and scored a run in the eighth on a Matt Brown (1-for-4) RBI single.
Fedroff completed the scoring with another RBI single to drive in Nate Recknagel (2-for-4).

Shorebirds beat Captains

Xavier Avery had five hits and Ron Welty added four hits and four RBI's as the Delmarva Shorebirds defeated the Lake County Captains 8-2 on Wednesday. This is the Captains fourth straight loss.
