Clippers fall 10-2
The Clippers fell back into a funk with a 10-2 loss to the Rochester Red Wings Wednesday night.
Starting pitcher Jack Cassel allowed eight runs and eleven hits. He left with one out recorded in the fifth inning.
It was the top of the order that gave the Clippers the most trouble. The first three Rochester batters combined for nine hits and seven runs. The middle of the order produced another five hits, three runs scored, and seven runs knocked in. Dustin Martin led the attack with four RBI despite having only one hit.
Rochester scored two runs in the opening inning when Alexi Casilla led off the game with a homer. The next two batters singled and Martin drove in a run on a fielder's choice ground out.
The Clippers tied the game 2-2 in the second inning. Brown, Marte, Toregas and Romero hit four consecutive singles to bring in a pair of runs. Brown was the only Clippers batter with multiple hits, including two doubles.
The Red Wings added three more runs in the third inning and one in the fourth. They would put the icing on the cake with a four-run sixth inning.
The loss drops the Clippers to 2-5 on the home stand. The conclusion of the series with Rochester begins Thursday at 12:05pm. Aaron Laffey will make a rehab start for Columbus. Righty Anthony Swarzak (3-5, 2.25) gets the nod for Rochester.
Aeros sweep doubleheader The Aeros claimed a back-and-forth affair in game one, striking for two runs in the sixth to take the lead for good. Jerad Head started the rally with a leadoff single, and New Hampshire reliever Rommie Lewis walked three straight hitters to force in a run and tie the game at 3-3. Matt McBride then greeted former Aero Bubbie Buzachero with an RBI single to left-center, scoring Carlos Santana and putting Akron ahead to stay. Nick Weglarz provided the final margin with a two-run homer in the seventh. Jeanmar Gomez (6-2) earned the win with a quality start, working around eight hits and two walks to allow only three runs in six innings. Lewis (1-4) blew the save and took the loss, while Vinnie Pestano closed it out for his league-leading 18th save. Weglarz, Beau Mills, and McBride all drove in two runs in the opener. Akron never trailed in the nightcap, as Armando Camacaro laced a two-run single to left-center with two down in the second to put the Aeros in front 2-0. New Hampshire cut the lead in half with a run in the fifth, but three straight doubles from Head, Weglarz, and Santana in the sixth gave the Aeros a 4-1 advantage. Those insurance runs would loom large in the bottom of the inning, as Brian Dopirak launched a two-run homer to turn it back into a one-run game. Adam Calderone then reached on an error to put the tying run on base, but Zach Putnam recovered to start a 1-6-3 double play to get out of the sixth and then didn’t allow a ball out of the infield in the seventh. Josh Judy (1-2) was the winner in game two, although special mention should be given to spot-starter Carlton Smith who turned in three shutout innings and has now worked 9.2 consecutive scoreless frames over his last four appearances. Adrian Martin (0-1) suffered the loss for the Fisher Cats, and Putnam got the final six outs for his first save. Camacaro finished 3-3 while Santana was 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Mills had hits in both games to stretch his hitting streak to nine games, while John Drennen had a hit in game one but went 0-3 in game two, and his hitting streak ended at nine games. K-Tribe lose in hitting spree It was all Kinston early as Lonnie Chisenhall hit his 12th home run of the season, a two-run shot in the first inning. Kinston kept the good times rolling, leading 6-0 going into the middle of the fifth inning. After Salem scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Kinston would again extend the lead scoring one in the sixth and seventh to extend their lead to 8-3 going into the stretch. The K-Tribe broke out of an offensive slumber, piling up ten runs on 14 hits, but the bullpen fell apart as Salem came back and beat Kinston 12-10 Wednesday night in Salem. Salem scored four runs in the seventh inning and five runs in the eighth inning to complete the three game sweep of Kinston. Salem would start the comeback in the seventh inning as Ryan Miller came in from the pen, giving up four earned runs on two hits, two walks and a hit batter in 1/3 of an inning. Kinston would score two more runs in the top of the eighth to make the score 10-7, but Salem would not say die. Salem started off the eighth inning with three straight hits off of K-Tribe reliever Dallas Cawiezell. Cawiezell went 2/3 of an inning, giving up four hits and three earned runs. Garrison Campfield was called upon to stop the bleeding but could not, giving up three hits and two earned runs as Salem scored a total of five runs in the bottom of the eighth to get the 12-10 win. It was the most hits, 14, that Kinston pitching has given up in a game this season. Campfield (1-2) got the loss for Kinston. Ryan Morris started for Kinston, giving up three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. Holt gave a good early performance from the pen giving up no earned runs in 1 1/3 innings.
