In the 9th round of the 2010 Draft, the Indians have selected RHP Jordan Cooper out of Wichita State.
Height: 6'2" Weight: 215 DOB: 05/10/1989 Bats: Right Throws: Right
Signing Update (June 13): Cooper has officially signed with the Indians. He will likely report to Mahoning Valley.
Ranks:
Baseball America: 122
PGCrosschecker: 140
Scout's Take: "He is a pitch ability guy with a good feel for three pitches with average to above average command of all three. There is a good chance that he will pitch in the big leagues in some capacity."
Quick Hit: As a sophomore in 2010, Cooper went 10-3 with a 2.01 ERA and was named a third-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball and earned Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year honors.
Jeff Ellis: The Tribe have selected another very interesting player in sophomore eligible right handed pitcher Jordan Cooper. Cooper was a 17th round selection of the Red Sox in 2007. Cooper is not a dominating pitcher and in spite of eye popping numbers he had a 1.59 ERA through May even though his fastball only sits in the 88-91 range and doesn’t have any nasty movement to it. Cooper has been such a dominator, however, because he has pin point control and great off speed stuff. Cooper’s command is plus plus and his off speed pitches look like they could both be plus. He has solid mechanics and a durable frame, and really just knows how to pitch and where to put his pitches so that they won’t hurt him. The issue with Cooper is the fact that he might be hard to sign because he is only a sophomore and it can be hard for a team to give a lot of money to a pitcher who doesn’t light up the radar gun. Cooper is a big risk in round 8, but you got to love them taking a 2nd or 3rd round pitcher in round 8 and rolling the dice.
