Indians Sign Paul Phillips

The Cleveland Indians today signed catcher Paul Phillips to a minor league contract with a non-roster invitation to 2011 Major League spring training camp.

Phillips, 33, appeared in 12 games for the Colorado Rockies last year hitting .217 (5-23) with one RBI and 4 runs scored. He spent the rest of the 2010 campaign in Triple-A Colorado Springs batting .238 (29-122) with 8 doubles, a triple and 10RBI in 34 games.

Paul, a right-handed hitting catcher, owns a 7-year Major League career average of .262 (58-221) with 10 doubles, a triple, 3 home runs and 26RBI over 91 games with the Kansas City Royals, Chicago White Sox and Colorado.

The University of Alabama product was selected by Kansas City in the 9th round of the 1998 MLB June Amateur Draft after being chosen in the 59th round in the 1995 draft (Kansas City) and the 25th round in 1996 (Houston Astros). He owns a career minor league average of .273 (730-2670) in 735 games over 11 seasons.
