After week one of the Dominican Summer League, the Indians are (3-2) and are 1.0 game in back of first place in the Boca Chica North Division. The DSL Indians have a few returning contributors from the 2010 season, but many of their key contributors have obviously moved on to the AZL team which will start up later in June.
Juan De La Cruz was the 3rd catcher on the team last year (.154-0-8) and he has started all five games behind the plate so far this season (4/20). Fermin Galvez was the backup first baseman in 2010 (.206-0-8) behind Charlie Valerio and he has started four of the games so far for the Indians (3/15, 1 HR). Manuel Boscan returns to 2B where he was a backup last season and he looks to be splitting time with a newcomer in 17 year old Ordomar Valdez. All five games at shortstop have been started by Yonathan Mendoza (3/21) while third base has been split so far by two rookies in Juan Herrera (3/10) and Amauri Castillo (0/7). The outfield for the DSL team along with the designated hitter spot have been a five man rotation. Felix Lora, Victor De Jesus, Joel Mejia, Angel Hernandez, and David Matos have played in the outfield and some time at DH with Matos playing first base as well. Hernandez, Mejia, and De Jesus were with the team last season, with De Jesus getting 154 at bats (.214-1-11). He started 56 of the Indians 72 games last year so he is the most veteran position player.
Four players have started games in the early going for the DSL Indians. Luis Lugo, Breily Puerta, and Anderson Polanco have one start each and Eliezer Sanchez has two starts. Sanchez started eight games and threw 33.2 innings in 2010. The pitching staff is lucky enough to have three other key contributors from 2010 to go along with Sanchez. Alejandro Rivas pitched in 22 games of relief last season (2-4, 2.83) and he struck out 40 hitters while walking 21 in 41.1 innings. Aleis Paredes is back too (4-4, 2.55) as pitched in 18 games, starting 7 of those, and he had a 42/27 K/BB ratio while holding hitters to a .213 average in 49.1 innings. The most experienced pitcher returning this season is closer Moisses Ramirez. This will be his third season with the DSL team and he turned 21 years old on March 8. His numbers have been great the last two seasons and many lesser pitchers have moved stateside which leads me to believe that maybe there is some sort of visa issue (total guess).

2009: 3-1 1.88 15G 28.2IP 17H 20K 10BB and 3 saves
2010: 2-4 1.26 26G 35.2IP 27H 35K 8 BB and 14 saves
In his two years for the DSL team he is 5-5, an ERA of 1.54 with 17 saves, and he has a WHIP under 1.00 with 55 K's in 64.1 innings. After saying all of that, so far this year he has blown a game and has a 7.71 ERA.
The Indians are coached this season by Max Diaz who is in his first year in the Cleveland organization. He is from Santiago in the Dominican Republic and he played college baseball at New Mexico State.
