On-Deck with the Captains: Week 9

Leading Off: The Midwest League has announced their all-star teams, and five Captains and the coaching have been selected. Anthony Gallas was named a starter, and will be participating in the homerun derby. Catcher Alex Monsalve and infielder Argenis Martinez are reserve position players. Starters Mike Rayl and Mike Goodnight, along with closer Clayton Ehlert round out the Captains selections. Ted Kubiak will be the manager of the Eastern squad, and he is bringing along hitting coach Jim Rickon and pitching coach Jeff Harris to round out the coaching staff.

Notes on Offense:

The Captains offense sputtered this week. Top hitters Alex Monsalve and Anthony Gallas hit a combined .094 (3/32) with nine strikeouts, three walks, and three RBI. The two Midwest League all-stars have paced the Captains most of the season (hence their all-star selection), and I believe they will both get back on track.

Reserve outfielder Brian Heere had a good week in the batter's box. Heere went 3/8 (.375) with two runs scored, a triple, and two RBI. He is batting .200 on the season with a homerun, 10 RBI, and eight runs scored. This good week brought Heere up to the Mendoza line.

LeVon Washington is getting better in the box. He hit .333 (6/18) this week. He also hit his first professional homerun versus the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on the 8th. Washington drove in two runs, scored five runs, and stole a base. He cut on his strikeouts with three on the week, and walked once. Hopefully, LeVon has many more weeks like this.

Hitter of the Week:

Nick Bartolone - 6/15 (.400), 2 runs scored, BB, SB

Notes on Pitching:

Steven Wright had an outing he would love to forget. The knuckle-baller gave up 11 runs (eight were earned) in 3.1 innings this week. He gave up three homeruns to the Rattlers, while only striking out two. He also took the loss. Wright is 1-2 on the season, with a 3.13 ERA in 46 innings.

Rob Bryson made his return to the mound this week, after breaking his ankle right before spring training. Bryson pitched two innings and gave up no runs or walks, and struck out four. He will probably make a few more appearences out of the Captains bullpen before moving up to Akron.

Luis Encarnacion cannot find homeplate. The tall righty went two innings this week and walked three and struck out four. He also gave up four runs. Encarnacion is 1-1 with a 7.50 ERA and have walked 14 batters in 12 innings pitched. They say walks will kill you, and Encarnacion is
learning the hard way.

Pitcher of the Week:

Mike Goodnight - Win (5-3), no runs, BB, 4 K
