The Columbus Clippers shut out the Toledo Mud Hens on Thursday night 6-0 at Fifth Third Field. Columbus starter Jeanmar Gomez silenced the Mud Hens offensively throwing eight shutout innings while allowing five hits, four walks and had five strikeouts.
The Clippers got on the board with two runs in the first inning with a Jason Kipnis RBI triple that scored Ezequiel Carerra, and then Kipnis late scored on a sacrifice fly by Lonnie Chisenhall. Columbus loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth and manager Phil Nevin summoned RHP L.J. Gagnier to get the innings final out. Gagnier instead walked the first two batters he faced to extend Columbus' lead over Toledo to 4-0.
The Clippers tallied a run off RBI singles in the sixth and the eighth to stretch their lead to a comfortable 6-0.
Nick Hagadone allowed three baserunners in the ninth inning but was able to keep the shutout intact.
The Clippers come home to face the Gwinnett Braves on Friday night, and lefty David Huff will be on the hill.
Aeros Drop Rain-Shortened Rubber Match To B-Mets
The Akron Aeros lost the rubber match of a three-game series to the Binghamton Mets 7-2 Thursday at NYSEG Stadium in a game delayed by rain for 40 minutes before it was called after six and a half innings.
Right-handed pitcher Collin McHugh recorded the win for the B-Mets tossing 5.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on eight hits and striking out eight while walking three.
Right-hander Austin Adams suffered the loss for the Aeros lasting four innings, giving up seven runs (six earned) on six hits, walking three and striking out five.
The B-Mets (25-45) got things started in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Jordany Valdespin reached with a bunt single, advanced to second on a Kyle Bellows throwing error and stole third. With two outs, Josh Satin singled home Valdespin to give Binghamton a 1-0 lead. Brahiam Maldonado walked putting runners on first and second. Allan Dykstra followed with a two-RBI double to increase the lead to 3-0.
The Aeros (34-39) got a run a back in the top of the second inning. Bellows led off with a single and advanced to third on a Karexon Sanchez double. Juan Apodaca followed with a walk to load the bases. Bellows scored when Cristo Arnal grounded into a force out to cut the B-Mets lead to 3-1.
Binghamton answered in the bottom of the third inning. Valdepsin led off with a single and stole second. Reese Havens doubled him home to make it 4-1 then advanced to third on a Juan Diaz throwing error. Satin followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Havens and giving Binghamton a 5-1 lead.
The B-Mets added two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Raul Reyes solo home run and an Adams wild pitch.
Akron got a run in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Tim Fedroff tripled and scored on a Beau Mills RBI double to make it 7-2.
That was as close as the Aeros would get dropping the rubber match of this three-game series.
The Aeros will begin a six-game homestand Friday as the Reading Phillies come to town for the first of a three-game set. Akron will give the ball to left-handed pitcher T.J. McFarland, who is 2-4 with a 5.54 ERA in 2011. He will face right-handed pitcher Austin Hyatt, who is 6-4 with a 4.42 ERA this season. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
Kinston wins second half opener
The K-Tribe turned in a gritty performance Thursday night to start the second half of the season with a come from behind 5-2 victory in Salem. The three day All-Star break apparently did nothing to cool the K-Tribe as the Indians won for the 25th time in the last 34 games.
Kinston trailed early thanks to a first inning solo home run from Salem's Kolbrin Vitek. Starter Marty Popham settled in after the homer allowing just two runs on five hits over five innings of work, he did not figure in the decision. Rob Bryson fired two scoreless innings and Kyle Landis (2-0) was the recipient of Kinston's resurgent offense picking up the win, his second, with a scoreless eighth. All Star closer Preston Guilmet worked the ninth to lock down his 17th save.
The Indians waited for pitchers Drake Britton and Tom Ebert to depart before marking Mitch Herold with two seventh inning runs to tie the contest. Roberto Perez and Tyler Cannon led off with back to back singles before being moved over on Tyler Holt's sac bunt. Casey Frawley notched an RBI single and Cannon scored on an error at the plate charged to Salem catcher Josue Peley for failing to catch the outfield throw, allowing Cannon to score the tying run.
Herold began the ninth and didn't make it out alive, allowing three base runners and recording an out before departing. Herold watched from the dugout as Jeremie Tice drew a go-ahead, bases loaded walk and Adam Abraham smashed a single through the infield to break it open. Herold (1-2) took the loss and blown save (1).
Kinston is now unbeaten in the second half and will attempt to win the series on Friday night. Game two gets underway at 7:05 in Salem's Memorial Stadium. Brett Brach (4-5) gets the start hoping to even his 2011 record. Brach faces Red Sox righty Pete Ruiz (3-3).
Doubledays Stymie Scrappers in Series Opener
Mahoning Valley had just one hit over the first eight innings and Auburn scored four runs off the Scrappers bullpen to win game one of the series, 7-2.
Tony Wolters tripled with one out in the top of the first inning, the only hit until his one out triple in the ninth. The Scrappers scored two runs in the ninth on a triple by Bryson Myles and a single by Jordan Smith.
The Doubledays took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning before Hendry Jimenez’s three-run home run in the fifth made it 4-0. Auburn scored one run in the sixth and two runs in the seventh to make it 7-0.
Mahoning Valley has lost all three series-opening games this season. The Scrappers and Doubledays play on Friday night at 7:05 pm.
